Feel free to rant and rave all you want if you disagree with anything on this list. I have a feeling people will hate that PJ is toward the bottom of the list.

As much as I love Lucinda Williams, I think she's too high on the list.
I don't think Sheryl Crow belongs on there at all.

The main drawback of this list is that it focuses on solo artists. While discussing women in music it is impossible not to mention such groups as ABBA or Shocking Blue, their influence stretches till now and will last even more. On the lesser scale I can name Cranberries, Cocteau Twins, maybe Skunk Anansie. And what about non-english singers, are they totally forgotten? Edith Piaf, Mylene Farmer, Marlene Dietrich - they all have right to be in this list.

As much as I love Lucinda Williams, I think she's too high on the list. I don't think Sheryl Crow belongs on there at all. I think Sheryl fits there just fine, she's great even though I'm not so excited about Wildflower album, it was okay but self titled, The Globe Sessions and C'mon C'mon were wonderful. Aww, Kate Bush should've been much higher on the list!! She's so awesome. I would've wanted Alanis on the list somwhere...

I would've wanted Alanis on the list somwhere... yup, I mean Alanis should go past Sheryl Crow at least... anyways, like Aims pointed out who cares... wonder what were the critea anyways, or was it just random based on personal preferences kind of thing...

Sorry half of you don't care. I was just trying to spark a discussion. I didn't mean that in a bad way... I guess I don't listen to enough female solo artists to be too worried about the opinions of radio listeners when it comes to Stevie Nicks and PJ Harvey. Every year the radio station I listen to does a similar thing, but with rock bands... about 50% of the people I vote for don't get as high on the list as they deserve, and 30% don't even make it on there. lol Tool are in that leftover 20%, btw.. at least the freaks who listen to that radio station are smart enough to vote them into the top 10, even if the shitty station rarely plays their music. (seriously, they have a playlist full of boring crap that they recycle every single day - if I never hear "lips of an angel" again it'll be too bloody soon.. ugh really, that band is worse than Creed and Nickelback joined together) I don't think there'll ever be a radio station that I'm happy with (there used to be! like 10 years ago and it got taken away.. lol). Hooray for mp3 players.

I'm glad that Joni Mitchell is number one instead of Beyonce.
There was this 500 Best Albums of All Time, listed by some magazine, and it was such a bullshit list. It had like 2 Beyonce albums and NO KATE BUSH AT ALL. Also, David Bowie's one album on the list was way after such quality acts as two Jay-Z albums!
The nasty truth is that most of these "Best of" lists are just marketing ploys, and that's one reason for me trying not to read them... But this list looks pretty good because the singers are actually females who have either performed their stuff exceptionally well or have written their own songs and influenced a lot of people in the process.
I do think, though, that Kate Bush should have been way ahead of Norah Jones (gag). And Alanis definitely should have been somewhere there (maybe replace Liz "I can carry one tune and that's it" Phair with her). Otherwise, I'm actually surprised at the quality of this list and inclusion of such great singers and personalities as Ella Fitzgerald and Dolly Parton.

I agree! Norah Jones hasn't even been around that long, while Kate Bush is rather an icon. It's kinda silly. I guess it must have something to do with air play. Norah Jones is played A LOT around these parts. And she doesn't sound like Patty! I'm still fuming about that!

Hmm, some of these people don't deserve that listing. Most of those people who make those have *no* idea what they're talking about. At least Tori-san got in the top ten though. Thanks for posting this Cazzie-san. xo

Hmm.. random, but while I don't really know much of Joni's music I'm thinking she's pretty deserving of that top spot.
I heard A Case Of You on a friend's myspace page a couple of weeks ago (yeah I'd never heard the original.. not that I've listened to Tori's cover more than a few times) and was awestruck. Really need to download it, actually.

Norah Jones is played A LOT around these parts. And she doesn't sound like Patty! I'm still fuming about that! It's funny, because Norah is a somewhat-talented fluke of a pop star, the only reason she's seen as special is because of her soft jazz stylings, which aren't even unique, just something that pop music audience hadn't been exposed to. Kate Bush, on the other hand, is one of the most talented and influential artists of the past two, maybe three decades. Bands ranging from Gnarls Barkley to the Foo Fighters have called her out as an influence, people you never would have expected. Not to disrespect Norah, but come on.

You're all probably going to hate me for this but ... I would have included Jewel. Before 0804 or whatever it was called, she was great with the whole 'girl and her guitar' act. If you listen to the Jewelstock tapes you can tell she's great live.
