I just wanted to add, regarding Mariah Carey, that I heard recently that she has beat out Elvis for the most #1 singles and is close to beating out The Beatles. There is something wrong with that picture, people. Seeing as her new single is just about getting felt up, it would be a true blow to music if that's the song that ended up taking the title.
I'm not saying the woman doesn't have talent. She does have an impressive vocal range. But her material is shit.

Meh, my respect for Mariah grows a bit each day, but that bit is both grudgingly and very small.
Björk - Who Is It? (video version)
This is really beautiful, I almost didn't like the bells at first but now I think I'm falling in love.

I was a little shocked that she redid a Medulla song without the vocals-only focus, but once I got over that it's just too pretty not to like.

Kate Bush - The Gay Farewell (Eddie the Queen)i remember Jay, eons ago, you and i (and Aimee, i think?) having a conversation about how there are no love songs written about gay couples and one of us was supposed to write one. well, seems like Kate beats us to it. twice, actually, cuz Kashka From Bagdad is also about a gay couple. but i thought you might like the lyrics to this one: I've never seen Such a sad queen as Eddie
I've seen him raving, Maybe even in pain, But never weeping like a baby
On Saturday afternoon He was really fine to him But on Saturday evening, Oh, well, Eddie was so pretty
But now his boy is leaving...
Hey, boy, you're so young To be a queen weeping You're just a little princess
Oh, Eddie, don't! Cause what can I do But listen to you tell your story?
On Saturday afternoon He was really fine to him But on Saturday evening, Oh, well, Eddie was so pretty
But now his boy is leaving... But now his boy is leaving... But now his boy is leaving him. Queenie, come home soon!hey, i never said it was a happy song.

I can't remember if that was me or not. Who knows. Sounds like something I'd agree on anyway.
Brian Molko + Michael Stipe duet on Broken Promise is an unhappy lovesong kinda thing. I can't think of anything else though.

so do i! SILENT ALL THESE YEARSYou know how some times you go by a long time without listening to a song and then suddenly it just clicks and you remember just how fucking amazing and brilliant and heartbreaking that song can be? i think i have that with Silent All These Years more than with any other song. ever. like, right now, i hadn't listened to it in literally months (i'm not kidding) and now it's been on repeat for the past hour. and will continue to be so for the remainder of this day. it's hard to keep the tears from coming with that string outro some times. i don't know how she can do it.

the entire Little Earthquakes album is very personal to me. it was the first album of hers i ever got and i didn't know a single song in it. i was in the USA at the time (she's not so famous down here, although A Sorta Fairytale got a fair amount of airplay, which surprised me) and had read about Tori in Björk and Alanis Morissette interviews, in which they cited LE as their inspiration. so i bought it on a whim. and man, am i happy i did. that trip will be forever marked as my Little Earthquakes summer. how unusual it is, that LE would actually be anyone's summer album. crazy, huh? ^ that's such a cool Tori story I get that with her songs too. And a few other peoples songs. I hadn't listened to Tori for ages till yesterday I just randomly felt like blasting To Venus And Back while I got ready for work. And then I had to listen to my mixed Tori cd I made in the car too. Aw fun. Flames Go Higher - Eagles Of Death Metal
