I was listening to Northern Lad a little while ago - I've always been struck by the lyrics in this song, and I was wondering what people make of the lines, "Girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page - when you're only wet because of the rain." The "only wet" part has always had a sexual connotation for me. (yeah, you know what I'm talkin' about...) but tonight I thought maybe Tori means that girls should only be wet because of the rain - and not from their own tears. I have no idea if I'm making any sense at all. I think both interpretations work, so I just want to hear what you people think.northern lad had a northern lad well not exactly had he moved like the sunset god who painted that first he loved my accent how his knees could bend i thought we'd be ok me and my molasses but i feel something is wrong but i feel this cake just isn't done don't say that you don't and if you could see me now said if you could see me now girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page when you're only wet because of the rain you know it's time to change he don't show much these days it gets so fucking cold i loved his secret places but i can't go anymore "you change like sugar cane" says my northern lad i guess you go too far when pianos try to be guitars i feel the west in you and i feel it's falling apart too don't say that you don't and if you could see me now said if you could see me now girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page when you're only wet because of the rain you know it's time to change when you're only wet because of the rain "My heart goes out to where that song [Northern Lad] comes from. It's very much about thinking you were loved for who you were, and realizing you weren't and realizing maybe you don't love yourself. The line, I guess you go too far/when pianos try to be guitars is just about never being enough. I felt that with my instrument sometimes, wanting to be Jimmy Page. You can only be you. A lot of times it's never enough for people."

I think I may just have an incredibly sick mind, too.

Oooh, I like that. I've always thought of that line in terms of its sexual connotations, but I think that explanation and yours kind of go hand in hand. Girls should be able to realize when their tears are holding so much sway and when that's all they have left... Then it's time to move on, because they should be wet for...other reasons. lol (That's some of my tipsy Thursday night rambling. )

Ok, you made me feel better about the whole sexual connotation thing - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of that.

bahaha! Ok, you made me feel better about the whole sexual connotation thing - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of that. No problem. I have a very dirty mind, so that's immediately where it went.

Daring to admit that my mind went into the gutter also.
But I think the tears interpretation works also, especially if you think about the context of the song and the album. I think she said somewhere her husband is the Northern Lad, so she's not moving on from HIM... more likely moving on from her miscarriage.

Gutter girl, here, too. but I DO think that the tears idea is partly what Tori means, too. Plus she's made several comments about how this album has a 'water' theme & that makes me think more of tears, as a literal meaning of "wet". I love this song. And "but I feel this cake just isn't done" is one of my all-time fav Tori lines. I think it's brilliant. I'll be awaiting a new sig line from Carly soon.... And DAMN! how did I miss a night seeing sloshy-bluey! PS~ Carly, what about "how his knees could bend....I thought we'd be OK....me and my molasses"...? LMAO!

I think the how his knees could bend , is saying that the boy prayed or something...
she thought she was going to be ok with him because he was a good boy, and then comes the when your only wet part, which I think has a sexual connotation ... in general my opinion is that this boy isnt doing it for her no more, so she has to move on, because you know, you go to far when pianos try to be guitars...

Isn't the "girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page" line about how hard is for someone to say, ok, the love is over, now i must go on and stop crying?.
Other explanation: when you've finished a relationship, lots of things come to your mind, the "if i had" things are pretty common (you think, if i had done this or that, you'd still be with you, or things would've been different). So my very weird and maybe wrong interpretation is that she says "girls" referring to all those things you think of before getting enough courage to forget and let your life go on.
I love Northern Lad, it's my fav. girl from Choirgirl, it always makes me really sad.

I thought maybe the "... how his knees could bend" part could be possibly that she used to make him weak at the knees?

I thought "how his knees could bend" was also about him being on his knees giving her head. but that's me. LOL.. i agree... the "wet" is both tears and sex..........because tori is all about speaking candidly about sex, which is empowering.

I've always taken the "when you're only wet" line sexually, like in a comfort sex type of way. Meaning that "all the rain"/things you can't deal with is making you wet and more willing to have sex to try and forget about them. I think the whole song is about this innocent, pure love that was lost and became this hurtful relationship where both partners were using eachother as comfort and pretending like nothing was wrong with their love. One of the saddest Tori songs ever

Hmm I always thought that line in a sexual sense as well and not just because of a dirty mind, but because it's the easiest interpretation: if your relationship has gone to the point where you don't even get aroused by your partner, it's time to turn the page, ie. realize that you don't have to be stuck with this relationship but move on and make yourself happy. and about the tears...interesting viewpoint. but what would the line then really mean? that it's time to turn the page (to do something different, to change the way things are) when you are not crying? emotionally numb? I never thought about it like that, i was just happy with my sex-thing . nice reminder that people interpret things differently and all interpretations can be "right"

i always take tori's lyrics into my own personal life as opposed to try and figure out what she means, to me it means sex doesn't turn you on anymore, like the person you with doesn't make you wet. xo
