I feel this song is about loosing virginity for a woman. Firstly, in Blood Roses Tori says "you gave him your BLOOD and a warm little diamond", now, I believe (I am a guy ) that some women can bleed the first time they have sex. And this song says "surrender, ten start your engines", which seems to me to mean back down to the guy and then get ready for "it". All this imagery is supported by things such as "a lilac mess in your prom dress" etc. I hope you understand what I mean....

Interesting thought... Never thought about it this way. I'm not sure if I could agree with you on the "start your engines part" - what would the girl's "mistake" then be that the boy realizes? And besides, you're talking about two different songs and mention only one line Blood Roses(I might agree on the virginity - or at least on having sex - in that song) and two in Liquid... So without context they could indeed mean anything!
I don't really know what to make of Liquid Diamonds - she's talking about *I* and *she*... Are they the same or different? People, ideas??
But do go ahead with this interpretation, I want to know why you think this way - beyond those two lines you mentioned. I'm not saying you're wrong no, but I think I need more examples for reasons why you have come to this conclusion and I'm just interested in hearing your views on this- and besides, it would make a good discussion! Hehehe.
Yes people. I'm trying to keep myself from taking a nap, so I'll stay and have a discussion about anything! (Unless I decide to hit the town for a fresh air, hee)

And this song says "surrender, ten start your engines", which seems to me to mean back down to the guy and then get ready for "it". All this imagery is supported by things such as "a lilac mess in your prom dress" etc. I hope you understand what I mean.... I do understand what you're getting at, yes. I actually agree about Blood Roses....'warm little diamond' is a pretty obvious reference to the female anatomy... but I'm not sure about Liquid Diamonds being about losing virginity. I see it more as Tori herself commented on the song: as being about fulfulling an eternal need within you. I love the beginning of the song....and the different references to transportation....horseback, dogsled...and of course the 'engines' which implies a faster, easier way to go. The way I take it is that she's saying she realizes she's not possessing any of those things....she's purely natural, and underwater thing and has to get there her own way....and it's nobody's fault...it's just how it is. She's liquid 'running' in the same way the others are 'running' just by different means.....and in her running she uncovers many things....the 'sea secret' rises....she's changing, but still liquid....I think of really crystal clear water when I hear 'liquid diamonds'. You know how it's all sparkly when it's in motion with the light on it? It shines like tiny diamonds are in the water... I think the 'diamonds' show when the secrets surface....they are there sparkling and demanding attention. And she can't take that personally; it's just who she is....and she'll keep running...liquid running, in the only way it knows how to do. I think the 'she' in the song is that fulfillment Tori speaks of, not so much an actual person. She often humanizes feelings in her songs, and I think this is another example. In the song I see her as trying to reach that fulfillment....that ever-elusive thing that will satisfy her personally, and her 'calling for her soul at the corners of the world' is her begging to have her soul listen and grasp that fulfillment.....but her soul's off playing poker (waging bets) with the stragglers....the ones left behind, who are not paying attention. The 'lilac mess in your prom dress' never even struck me for a moment as being blood-related. LOL I see it more as a memory....one of those times when you fall apart after something traumatic-dramatic happens.... I've had a 'mess' or 2 like that in a Prom dress.....left there wondering 'what the hell just happened?....how did it get to this?'. And it burns you inside....your friends aren't there....it does feel like 'madness.' Maybe that's what Tori was doing...simply throwing in a common female reference to a trying situation to prove the impact of her 'mantra' in the song....b/c then she follows it with "and you say: I guess I'm an underwater thing and I guess I can't take it personally.." Like she's trying to remind herself that she can't help the way things are....can't help the fact that she's liquid....that she is what she is. All there is to do is keep running.....keep searching for the fulfillment, keep sifting up the diamonds to the surface. When I think of it that way, this song is very powerful to me.

Wow, ok, you say that was non-sensical, Bee, but I thought it made perfect sense... Possibly b/c I could have written almost that entire post myself.

Wow I never thought of it as losing virginity, but a song about (and bare with me here people)
Being friends with someone then breaking the friendship and you know how you're close with someone and you know their secrets and you get tempted to tell because you're angry with them.
Just the whole bit about secrets, and not taking it personal, not forgiving, and saying if your friends don't come back to you.

Here's Tori's description of it: "I don't know of anybody who's gonna be fulfilled if they get hit by a bus. You have to surrender to that eternal need to be fulfilled. That's very much what Liquid Diamonds was for me."
