Hey guys. I have been debating with a friend about these lyrics to Amber Waves. I think they are about girls that dance or are in the adult industry, and how every time they do something they give some of their self away. Thoughts?
Well he lit you up Like Amber Waves in his movie show He fixed you up real good Till I don't know you anymore From Ballet Class to a Lap Dance Straight to video And the pool side news Was that he would be Launching you
Chorus: Into every young man's Bedroom - you gave it up On DVD and magazine - You gave it up A private rite of passage You gave it up To every boy's sweet dream With their paper cuts
You said "he's got a Healing Machine It glows in the dark Glows in the dark: You say "there's not a lot Of me Left anymore - Just leave it alone. But if you're buy, and you have The time, tell the Northern Lights to keep shining - Lately it seems like they're drowning"
He cold light you up And summon every swan Or the Lakesie Off to Cabo San Lucas For some optical stimulus Then you started to guess Ther was someone else Though His flint glass Seeing all of you Immersed in His sepia
Chorus
So I went by - Cause I had the time, And told the Northern Lights To keep shining They told me to tell you - They're waving

Yup, agreed. And I think that Tori actually meant the story to be like this too, so well figured Concertina (normally her songs are harder to figure out, in my opinion). This is probably one of my favorites on the album.

One of the best lyrics yet.
The American edition of "60 Minutes" did a piece on a young lady/girl really who had become a porn star, which they aired on the Australian edition too about 6 months ago. Ever since then this song has had even more meaning because it captures the emotion so perfectly - the girl on 60 Minutes was a star (she'd even won awards) but she was numb and empty inside compared to how she'd been a year or two earlier when she was first interviewed and had just arrived in the big city.

Good observation. I think I saw that too. It was mad disturbing. What was her name again?
It was a tall girl with a short black pageboy right?

Guys, guys, you're forgetting something... Amber Waves was the name of the porn actress performed by Julianne Moore in the film 'Boogie Nights'. Most likely Tori got it from there and made her own little story about her. It's definetely about a woman in the adult business, given the refference.

Most likely Tori got it from there and made her own little story about her. It's definetely about a woman in the adult business, given the refference. That was one of the BEST movies....I was really surprised at how much I liked it. I live here near 'porno-town' Hollywood. In fact, my uncle lives in the VERY gated community where the 'porn capital' of our entire country is (he's NOT got a hand in the biz, though!)...how can that be? These days the porn industry is run by more private entrepreneurs filming from their own private studios in their homes. It's a HUGE business, especially with the net now. And SO many many "Ambers" are out there. It makes me so sad....that emptiness that orfeo mentioned the porn star on 60 minutes having.....it's very evident when you meet these kinds of girls ....their emptiness is so obvious. "You said there's not a lot of me left anymore...just leave it alone"...it's just like that. I know one such 'actress' who's got 2 children my kids' ages (they think their mom is a 'model') and it's verrrry difficult for her b/c she's got them in really good schools and her 'job' pays for that (she's a single mom), and even though she's very educated and could find a decent job outside the industry, she's been caught in the twisted game of it...the easy money, the 'fame', etc. And I look at her and wonder.....don't you miss YOU? It's so very sad. So this song makes me think of all those kinds of women in those positions. It's a choice, yes, but many times they feel they are beyond the choice. Maybe that's what Tori's trying to express in the song....and that's where Scarlet comes in to try to help her. I could hear Tori sing that "you said he's got a healing machine, it glows in the dark...glows in the dark" line a squillion times, I love it. Do you all agree that she's referring to a movie camera there? That Amber is painfully aware what 'that life' is doing to her, but she's promised things...promised stardom, a quick-fix for whatever she's run away from, a 'healing' of sorts by the filmmaker's contract? That's what I think.

I thought the thing that glows in the dark wasn't the movie camera, it was the movie PROJECTOR. You know, in the old days at least you'd have the person with the projector at the back and a widening shaft of light towards the screen. Seeing yourself as a star, projected on the big screen, would make all the rest seem worth it, ie "healing".

The lyrics to this song remind me of Pamela Anderson. Girls who go out to LA to be discovered and get sucked into the adult industry by some sleazy guy who promises to make them the next BIG THING.

Well Amber is not only a porn star she’s also America. At first I was a little disappointed that scarlet’s walk had to little Indian culture and sharpness against the genocide committed against the Indian nations (like in her “Home on the range” the Cherokee version) then I realized that I was stupid enough to underestimate her of course It’s there in many layers like on the album title song and on “Virginia”<br> I love her way of writing lyrics they are never one-dimensional.

I haven’t watched porn movies since I did my military service back in –88-89 (honestly!), I’ve seen the film “Boogie nights” however, a weird and funny film about the porn industry where Amber is a slightly aging porn star. I would also assume that Tori knows about the ex-porn star Tracy Lords writing about her being a Tori fan in her autobiography.

I’ve just found out from a TV guide (missed it) that Traci or Nora (sorry for Tracy) are a fellow 68-fire, it’s silly that it means something for me but it does. Perhaps it makes me see her as a time sister, I’m able to feel the timetable, the passing years the shifting seasons. Sadly a lot of the good 68-fires I knew saw their ships burn to pieces. I cant say I liked those tapes when I served the corps, I mean she’s beautiful like an angel but I just knew something was really broken behind it. I rather had a wish to give her a hug full of tenderness than have a dick standing at attention. I hope Traci and Tori have met and shared wine together if not I think they should she’s probably a cool girl. I wish her a good life ahead, I guess she’s tough as hell and from what I’ve heard a really good actress. Sure I enjoyed seeing rollergirl smash the face of that idiot in “Boogie nights” but it was just a movie, I would rather like the idea that Tori thought of Traci. I don’t know if she’s still just a masturbation-object for some losers and I don’t care, (I don’t think she care either) but for me she’s a survivor-fighter despite really harsh conditions, qualities that together with sensitivity I admire the most. I have from intuition (and I trust my intuition) an ocean of respect for her, something I could never have for any prissy Cornflake Girl. Fuck all the slanderers I’m glad she’s a Tori fan and I will read the autobiography “Underneath It All”.
And Jesus I like this girl I always have, but do I have to drown to find something about her on the net? Well I’ll give it another try when I’m not in a hurry.

The porn star you referred to on 60 Minutes is Bella Donna. But it wasn't 60 Minutes, it was Primetime Live w/ Diane Sawyer. I read that Tori met an aging porn star in L-A and their conversation inspired this song. The healing machine may be a television.
