Snow Cherries From France I knew a boy who would not share his bike oh but he let me go sailing I swore that I could survive any storm oh then he let me go
"Can you Launch Rockets from here?" Boy I've done it for years right over my head and when I promised my hand he promised me back Snow Cherries from France all that summer we traveled the world never leaving his own back garden girls I didn't know just what it could be oh but he let me go sailing
you question me, "Can you ride anything?" Lord do you mean like your mood swings Invaders and Traders with the best intentions may convince you to go "They look like Pirates from here" Boy I've been one for years just keeping my head and when I promised my hand you promised me back Snow Cherries from France
and then one day he said "Girl it's been nice, oh but I have to go sailing" with cinnamon lips that did not match his eyes oh then he let me goBeautiful song... what the hell's it about?

Tori's talked about how she and Mark go sailing sometimes. I'm positive it's about him. I'm so hooked on the song -- it just exudes new love.

I really wanted Angels to hook me because when i read the lyrics I was so interested in them, but as of yet it hasn't. Bluey and I love the cherries!

i haven't had the privilege of hearing it just yet but from the lyrics i agree that it is probably about mark. the line "and when i promised you my hand you promised me back" makes me think of marriage.
it sounds so pretty i can't wait to get it! i'll probably have more insight after i feel it a little, you know?
the whole sailing thing kind of initially makes me think that he lets her explore, wander, be herself in all ways. and also just the places real love can take you. i really like the line "girls i didn't know just what it could be/oh but he let me go sailing" --- ahhh, that sounds like she is so in love, it's so sweet!
but something about it also sounds sad. i'll just have to listen to it i guess and get back to it...

I'm pretty sure this is the song that Neil Gaiman was twisting Tori's arm to include on the compilation. I love it!

Tori has mentioned the problems with writing this song, and how her perspective changed depending on whether she was mad with her husband or not. So I'd say it's about Mark!

Tori has mentioned the problems with writing this song, and how her perspective changed depending on whether she was mad with her husband or not. So I'd say it's about Mark! Yep, here ya go! Straight from my transcription of the interview from the website: ~~~~~~~ 'Snow Cherries From France' took a long time to write, tell us why. Ok, 'Snow Cherries From France' took a long time to write, yes, about seven years maybe, um, I finally finished it this Summer. And it's not that it was just finished as far as the song goes, but I couldn't seem to find the point of view to sing it. I went back and forth depending on if I were mad at my husband or not, I mean it kept changing, but then finally I found a place where the..that I began to understand what it was saying to me, and in the recording I changed some of the quotes that he had said originally, no, SHE says and, because of that, it all began to make sense. So, her position in it changed from when I started to write it, and she's a little more involved, she's little more up to shenannigans than I thought she originally was, and that's why it worked. ~~~~~~~

and then one day he said "Girl it's been nice, oh but I have to go sailing" with cinnamon lips that did not match his eyes oh then he let me go
i think this is the sad part that veela mentioned... he sailed away...... but then again "he let me go" part sounds like he let her go, like, to be free...
btw can someone explain what did she mean with this "with cinnamon lips that did not match his eyes"?

mayyyyybe.. and this may be a stretch, but the cinnamon lips part could mean they're yummy to kiss, however his eyes tell a different story, since he let her go, his eyes say goodbye ?? i dunno.

I don't think it's a stretch. That's sorta how I think of this line. I love this song, especially the part "Can you launch rockets from here? Boy, I've done it for years - Right over my head." That line really gets me - especially the way she sings it.

Yes who says it have to be about her private life at all…and when you listen it’s what it mean for you that’s relevant. But It’s probably right that It’s about Mark I like him, it was painful to listen to Pele and read the interviews about her in between boyfriends In which she described her taking disrespectful lowlifes as boyfriends as her way of urinate on her self. Anyway this part about going sailing and being sure to survive every storm, I think it’s about finding your self through living. I like the sea and when people used to sink my self worth like an anchor I just longed to go out on the sea pass trough a stormy weather- Beaufort 8 or more and feel alive…the saltwater in the face the lighthouses far behind in the dark of night the wind in from the stern… And I just feel like fuck you all you fuckers you may beat me in a lite breeze but not here. While I don’t think Eric has anything to do with this song it still reminds me of “song for Eric” (except for the fact that she doesn’t sit and wait for the handsome boy here nope! she take the helm). But of course that song can be singed without Eric’s presence in another time and place (although she probably believed she had met him in another time) just as this song could be. But if it’s about Mark then what about the departure end? That’s the sad part. And for some twisted reason sea, rockets or what I also start thinking of Flying Dutchman.
Hell she maybe just happens to like the sea she lives in Cornwall right? A place where people are born as sailors.

well, maybe that part with "Girl it's been nice, oh but I have to go sailing" it's about how now he want's to explore and letting her to go it's like a making ties. Remember the "little Prince"; the part about fox and Prince. The fox said about establishing ties that first you make connecion then you let go and if it was true friendship then this person will come back to you...
and he let her go because he tust her and know that she will survive on the ocean of life...
maybe it's sad at first point but when you think about that then you start understanding how beutifull it is when someone trusts you so deeplly that he let's you go and it's you're decision if you'll come back to him.
(I'm again sorry if there are any languge mistakes- my favorite proofreader is out and I have only a dictionary to help me ;D )

Ditto Ame you’ve got it right that’s how it should be and it is beautiful. It’s just that Tori’s lyrics have at least for me always felt kind of dreamy very beautiful empowering but at the same time kind of sad. Like for instance “Gold Dust” it’s the greatest happiness when Scarlet gets her baby like Tori also did but still a kind of melancholic feeling in the song (personally I relate to it as the time that pass me by) the sand through the hand. But I suppose that’s what I like in a text all the different feelings. But this is a positive song empowering and full of energy.
And as for the language you’re doing fine. As for me I wouldn’t be able to write anything in English whitout a spelling check in “word” before I post, I usually fuck up the Grammatical stuff but that’s OK. And then I use the “Babylon” translation software. And I think they gonna start wonder on the library one day why they never gets their Dictionary’s back. Don’t mind spelling errors it’s what you have to say that counts and you speak well so continue to share your thoughts.

This is from an interview in a Swedish magazine:
Snow Cherries From France is that about your husband, Mark? -Hmm yes it’s about love. I usually don’t tell what my lyrics are about. But it’s one of those songs where the woman knows that the man will leave, but she chooses to be with him anyway. Are you saying that the man are going abroad but will return one day? Maybe he will return but he’s a restless soul and she knows what she’s getting in to. He really doesn’t promise her anything, except for Snow Cherries From France. But she’s offering him her hand, that’s what SHE promise.
