figured this would be a good place to put this. I read the book it took me 8 hours (round 450 pages) and I absolutly adored it. It had such vivid descriptions and I swear I could feel california in my minds eye or something. I am going to reread it again! I think I want to see the movie...Are there any other books similiar to this book that you guys recommend? My fav hobby is the grab a book and read in central park..so help me out guys

I ordered this book several months ago, but have not read it yet...I've been trying to decide what book I wanted to read next and it is between White Oleander and Tuesdays with Morrie. I plan to read both...but now that you mention how great White Oleander is, I think I might do that one first. I'm sure I won't finish it in 8 straight hours though!

I read WHITE OLEANDER over Spring Break. I really liked parts of it. There was something that kept me from fully enjoying that book, but I can't put my finger on it.
I would recommend SHE'S COME UNDONE by Wally Lamb and MAP OF THE WORLD by Jane Hamilton.

Oh, I'm going to read White Oleander this summer.... daturaangel, I don't remember if you read What's Eating Gilbert Grape with us or not....but if you didn't, that's another good one for Central Park reading. I also second Carly's nomination of She's Come Undone.....that book is great. I read it twice. Have fun you lil bookworm!

I read the White Oleander a while ago, because it was recommended to me by a bunch of people, heh. I liked it, but I was really bothered by the "Oooh mythical Scandinavians" descriptions in it and just basically bunching up all the Scandinavian countries into one heap. If you are born in Denmark, you shouldn't have any "ice cold arctic circle" gaze or whatever it was that Ingrid had, hehehe. Otherwise an interesting book! I was afraid it might turn into a mushy tear fest in the end, but yay, was proven wrong! And Fishdust: I love the Dark Materials, too! Did you know they are now --for real-- planning a movie on it, it might come out on 2005? That'll be a hard job and met with great controversy, I'm sure! Angie, I think I'd love to read anything by Salinger in the Central Park ;D Grab "Franny and Zooey" if you haven't read that. That's a lovely novel. It's similarly, if I remember right, introspective as WO. Other than that I read a lot of science fiction [aimed to criticize whatever is going on at the world at the time of writing] so I can't be too much of a help here, heh. A book I will carry around with me will be "Diamond Age - Or the Young Girl's Illustrated Primer" as soon as K. brings me the copy he got signed by the author. EDIT: Hahah and I only now read Fishdust's comment about lifting this topic from the dead. Oooops! Well, Angie, I hope you're still reading in the Park

come on koalapupu.... together now...... Hehehe. Yeah I heard about Dark Materials ages ago too, but now there are new rumors about. Here's a link! Loads annoyingly slow... But it's interesting. (dang, seems to be down at the moment, but just wait...) www.bridgetothestars.net/index.php?p=weitzinterviewI don't read much fantasy anymore these days, but I did find one fantasy book extremely entertaining, namely "The Dark Lord of Derkholm" by Dianne Wynne-Jones. It parodies the worst "swords and sorcerers"-stock fiction there is, it's a fun read! And if you liked HDM, you might like the sci-fi novel I mentioned, "The Diamond Age". It's by Neal Stephenson and... well without giving anything away, it's about a poor girl who lives in an abusive family and who one day gets a book from his brother that has been developed to teach a lot of girls cheaply and fast in very complicated matters (you'll find a reason to that too). It sounds very simple, but it is a mind-blowing book. The book itself, like the Primer (the teaching book in the novel), kinda grows with the protagonist. So it starts off with "easy" stuff, and gets more complicated towards the end. I LOVE IT!

*lol* Carly at making Miranda read it! I do that with my sister all the time; "Here, Bre, this book was so awesome it made me sob my guts out! You just gotta read it!" Okay, here are more books I recommend: 1. Wicked by Gregory Maguire (the "true story" of the Wicked Witch of the West...one of my all-time favorites!) 2. The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst (A man's wife dies suddenly, her death witnessed by the couple's dog Lorelei. The man attempts to discover the mystery of his wife's death through Lorelei..very interesting book!) 3. The Elegant Gathering of White Snows by Kris Radish (a really *woman-power!* type of book that made me re-think my relationships with the women in my life and value them so much more). 4. The Lake of Dead Languages & 5. The Seduction of Water both by Carol Goodman. (In both of these books, women must revist their past to make sense of their lives...my fav. is "Lake"). 6. Amy and Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout. (A mother-daughter novel - very "coming-of-age", "making-hard-decisions" type of book). 7. Good in Bed & 8. In Her Shoes both by Jennifer Weiner. (I fell in love with the overweight Rose, who is the main character of both these 2 novels). Coincidentally...or not...Weiner's newest novel is titled Little Earthquakes. Hmmm.....wonder where she got that?
