Ok, danielle... I went and dug up one of the links that I've come across where you can hear an interview with Damien....one of the best I've found. It's from a tiny radio station here in Santa Monica (in so Cal) It includes his song "Cannonball" just before the interview... (and dig that Irish accent), then a live in-studio performance of "Delicate" (my favorite!) and he talks of how he admires Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone and others. They also play the song "Volcano" right after he describes how he met Lisa. It's the video recorded version...slightly different from the domestic album version, but still amazing. Finally, he plays another live tune, "the Blower's Daughter" to finish the interview. www.kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=gz&air_date=6/7/03&tmplt_type=showIn a nutshell: he was formerly in a band called Juniper, which included his buddies from school, but he left the band b/c he didn't like the 'music industry'...he wanted more control over his music. He took 'time off" in Italy for several months, then got itchy to make more music so he travelled around Europe literally singing on the streets and living off the little money he made. He bought an 8-track and started recording songs on his own, which he sent off to his 2nd cousin, David Arnold, well-known composer (did music for James Bond, for one) in London who praised his work. Then eventually he bought his own little studio, making his own music & playing for who would listen. He talks about how everyone who currently works with him now as a solo artist he met in interesting ways. He was at a cafe with his sister and they sat next to Lisa randomly and started talking about music and he found out she's a singer. He ran into her again later and had a chance to hear her sing. Awhile later she came to see him perform live at a gig and he had another female friend accompany him on stage for "Cold Water" and Lisa saw the show and liked his music. At the end of the show he told her he had originally thought of ringing her up to ask HER to join him but he was too embarassed seeing how he hardly knew her. She told him that he should have called, that she would have loved to join him. So they eventually got together and he heard HER do Cold Water with him and was completlely blown away by her.... The rest is musical history that I'm extremely grateful for b/c I'm completely addicted to his(their) music.....in case you couldn't already tell! I should also add that part of my fascination with his sound is due to his brilliant cello player, Vyvienne Long. IT'S JUST SO GOOOOOD!

Yep, she's COMPLETELY addicted I've had a look and as far as I can gather his album hasn't been released in Australia yet. In fact according to Amazon it hasn't even come out in the UK yet! Just Ireland and USA.

Trev (with my right hand..), forgot to say this: If you like his music as much as I do, you MUST purchase the album when it's released in Australia....seeing how he's a new Indie artist and all. The packaging for the album is very nice, too....at least the one we got here is. (it's a linen-type booklet thing)

bee, I'm so glad you couldn't keep this guy to yourself!!! I just received "O" and the Nick Cave goodies in the mail yesterday. I've listened to "O" a couple times already and am absolutely amazed. It has surpassed my expectations, which were pretty high to begin with! I can't pick a favorite quite yet. I'll let you know when I figure it out.
A couple mini-reviews I found in Rolling Stone:
"An out-and-out gorgeous CD, so full of undiluted, unfalsified emotions that it verges on open-heart surgery." ~Newsweek
"Nothing short of a complete package of art, personality and presence on a level with Jeff Buckley or Thom Yorke." ~L.A. Times
Those reviews pretty much sum it up, I think.
*scuttles off to go do the dishes to the music of "O"*

OH! OH! Hi, Mazry! *waves like a lunatic* I'm so glad you're back!!!
I was planning on buying my Damien Rice ticket tomorrow once I got to Minneapolis, but I just saw that the box office closes pretty early so I guess I'm going to wait until I'm back at school. I am DEFINITELY going to see him in concert if it's the last thing I do.
I promise you I will cry like a baby duriing Cannonball...

Damien Rice Minneapolis, MN ~ Fine Line Music Cafe (9/24/03)
Ok, so the ticketbastard site said the show started at 8 pm (it actually started at 9), so I got to the venue at 7 to buy my ticket. When I got there, there were a couple other people waiting to buy tickets, too. Damien was doing his soundcheck (very cool) but, of course, we were kind of bummed out when he started singing Lisa’s part in “The Blower’s Daughter.” I bought my ticket - it was general admission, so it’s all good. I had a couple hours to kill, so I went to Borders. I picked up the only copy of “O” and saw that it was $19.00 so I didn’t buy it - I know I can get it somewhere for less than that. Anyway, I’m still standing around the “R” CDs, and this guy came up and started looking at the “Ri...” CDs. So, I asked, “Are you looking for Damien Rice?” And he said, “Yeah, I want to check out his album - I’m thinking about going to the show.” So I handed him the CD - at Borders you can scan any CD and listen to it. He asked me if I was going to the show and I told him that I was. Then he asked if I thought he should go. Of course, I said, “Definitely go. I think you’ll really enjoy it.” He listened to the CD for awhile and then came up to me again and thanked me and told me he was going to go to the show. Woo! I love it when stuff like that happens. I wish I would have run into him after the show to see what he thought of Damien.
The venue is fairly small - there were probably 250 people there, if that. Also, it was 21+ which was nice. The opening act complained about one of their last shows which was all ages and there were some obnoxious 14 year-olds. Believe me, there were some obnoxious adults at this show... Anyway, the opening act was a band called Pedestrian (they’re from L.A.). I thought they were really good. The lead singer has a mesmerizing voice. Their music is a nice blend of melancholy acoustic, and riffs that fucking rock. Anyway, there were SO many people talking during their set - I was thoroughly annoyed. The lead singer actually whispered, “shhh” before their last song. Anyway, kudos to Pedestrian; they put up with a lot of crap. For example, some guy behind me kept saying (quite loudly) “Hey Pedestrian, don’t get hit on the cross-walk.“ What an idiot! They were definitely a pleasant surprise and I’m hoping to order their CD soon.
We waited a ridiculous amount of time before Damien came out, like, 45 minutes. Anyway, I’ll try to do a song-by-song review. I’ll try my best to keep them in the correct order, but I’m sure they won’t be exactly right.
Mystery Song And I’m starting this review by making myself look really stupid. The first song he did was not on “O” and I don’t remember it well enough to figure out the title. (I think it was “Then Go”). Anyway, I instantly had tears in my eyes, as Damien just has a lovely presence. Oh, I should mention that I was less than 10 feet away from the stage! Volcano I was really looking forward to this because it sounded so different when I was listening to his soundcheck. Mary, you’re going to love it! Even though I haven’t heard “Upside Down” with the band first-hand, I’ve heard mp3’s. That is what I’m comparing this version of “Volcano” to. It’s more “thick.” Simply delicious. Older Chests This was so incredibly beautiful. Duh. How could it not be? **Damien chatted with us for awhile and asked for requests. He said, “I usually just go with the flow, but I don’t really have flow tonight. Any requests?” A lot of people yelled “Cannonball,” but he played “Amie” instead. LOL! Amie Before the song, he did a very cute, short song about being passed (pissed) off after seeing a shooting star because it lasted such a short time. “Amie” is one of my favorites. This is when I became mesmerized by Damien’s cello player, Vivian. The music to “Amie” is simply phenomenal. La Professor I LOVED hearing the non-album songs. They made me love him even more. This song is great - I really hope you get to hear it at your show, Mary. He’s so damn cute when he sings in French! Cannonball Soooo great. Um, I thought about Mary’s signature, because I’m a dork.

**Damien told us a story about a relationship he was in with this woman. They were best friends, soul-mates. They “shared the same bed, but nothing ever happened.” The woman is now married and has a child. Then he talked about how the next song was about how you can love someone so much and then suddenly hate them with all your heart and soul. Woman Like A Man This song is fucking nuts, pardon my language. There is so much rage, it’s unbelievable. But, of course, it’s Damien - he does angst incredibly well. It was really poignant and it just ROCKED. Knowing the story behind it added a lot to it, too. Me, My Yoke and I It’s a cute little song. **Damien left the stage for a minute and left Vivian to do a song. The crowd went NUTS when she started playing “Purple Haze.” On a cello! It was so awesome! She sang, too, and her voice is so damn cute. Then Damien came out near the end and sang the last couple verses. I Remember This is my favorite song of his and it is very dear to my heart. The tears started the second he started playing. You know how the second half of that song is complete, blissful insanity? Multiply that by 10 - he goes nuts when he plays it live. Childish He dedicated it to all the “artistic people” in the crowd - “they usually have their heads pretty far up their asses.” This song is hi-freaking-larious. Groovin’ Damien told us a story about “a boy he knew” (himself, LOL). When he was 15 or 16 he was in love with this girl. The girl had never kissed anyone before. But the boy had kissed someone and actually “touched her on the back” so this girl thought he was “stained.” It was really cute. Anyway, he went on to say it’s a song that a young boy wrote who had no lyrical ability. He sang it outside of her bedroom window. Baby Sister This song is so sweet. I really loved it and thought of my younger sisters at home - I miss them! Eskimo I’ll admit it - this isn’t one of my favorites. But I still love it, if that makes any sense. It was beautiful, especially when he sang in Finnish. **Damien asked us what song we wanted to hear, as he was going to start rolling out. “Cold Water” won, thank God. I was thinking that would be such a great finale song. He wouldn’t start playing until all the lights were off. Then he waited for a worker to turn off the neon screen that was on one wall. It was pretty funny. Cold Water It’s so incredibly haunting. He made the minor change of “Love one’s daughter, allow her that” which is my favorite part of that song. The chanting creeped me out, as it usually does - in a good way. I was in complete shock when he made the transition into “Hallelujah,” one of my favorite songs EVER. It was perfection. ENCORE: Delicate I have no idea what to say about this song. It’s so sweet, and I want to cry just thinking about it. The chorus gives me chills every time I hear it. The Blower’s Daughter Another one of my favorites. Damn it, I love the whole album... I was waiting for it all night since I heard him play it during soundcheck. He proved he has great range when he sang Lisa‘s “Did I say that I loathe you? Did I say that I want to leave it all behind?” JAM SESSION: **Or as Damien called it, “the hidden track.” LOL Pedestrian came out and there was some instrument swapping going on, which was interesting to say the least. Damien talked about how he loves Minneapolis because it reminds him of when he was a young guitar player - he admired Prince, who’s from Minneapolis. Kiss TOO funny! Hearing Damien try to sound like Prince was a classic moment. Supposedly, they didn’t really practice but it sounded great. One of the drummers did a guitar solo, one of the guitarists did a drum solo. The crowd was so into it. Cheers Darlin’ Damien asked the lead singer of Pedestrian to sing this. His voice was perfect for it, but he kept screwing up the lyrics and Damien had to keep whispering the words to him. It was really cute. Then Damien took over and sang it. I wasn’t expecting to hear it, but he came through! When Doves Cry He sang a couple verses, then a little snippet from “All Along the Watchtower.” Then they all jammed on stage for about 10 minutes. It was so funny watching Vivian (the cello player) because they were completely rocking out. She had to keep taking breaks because she couldn’t play anymore. She was a trooper, though.
I have to thank you, Mary, for sharing your love of Damien with me. It was such an amazing show. So, yeah, the rockin’ parts on “O” rock 10 times more in concert. Woo! Sure, Lisa wasn't there but it WORKED. It more than "worked," - it was extraordinary.

I CAN HARDLY SIT STILL IN MY CHAIR TO READ ALL THIS! Uggh, and I'm crying AGAIN!... Carly, thanks so much for giving such a STELLAR review of your show. I'm so thrilled (really, beyond any words) that you love his music like I do. You got some beautiful and impressive moments there. I'M DYING TO SEE VIVIAN ON THE CELLO! omg...that's gonna blow my socks off, for sure. I'm sure I'll get over the fact that Lisa's not there, too....especially after your glowing review. I've chatted with a few Damien fans from the fansite boards and they told me the same thing....He does NOT disappoint solo, and that he completely blows you away with his abilities. I'm too excited to find out for myself! Ok, I've gotta run to bed, but I reserve the right to come back & do what I do best... RAMBLE! Thanks, dear... Mary PS Holy (Irish) Potatoes!....HALLELUJAH must have been so amazing....and he did Baby Sister and Groovin'! No 'Toffee Pop', though? I'm really hoping to hear that one...such a great song. I have all those mp3's by the way, if you want them. They are as of yet, unreleased Damo gems.

Ok, wait...hold the phone! I just saw about the first song... Yes, that IS 'THEN GO'!! It starts off: Among the afflictions With which I've been marked I'm not so prententious And not quite so dark I get the feeling you're bored with me And not through habit or frequency Did your mother have you easily? And if there's someplace else you'd rather be Then go, then go Then go, then go...Right?! Yummmmmmy!!!!

Holy shit! I think I just found a new favorite! I saw his performance tonight on Last Call with Carson Daley and I just love his music. That other girl that sings with him is really talented also, and mighty fine.
