Holy shit! I think I just found a new favorite! I saw his performance tonight on Last Call with Carson Daley and I just love his music. That other girl that sings with him is really talented also, and mighty fine. The other girl is Lisa Hannigan and her voice is both angelic and rich, amazing. Pat, I'm telling you....go buy the album, "O". You won't be disappointed!

My review of our sold-out Damien Rice show at Henry Ford Theater, Hollywood California, October 4 2003. You all know by now that I don't just talk about the music when I'm reviewing, so get ready for a long posting! This was my 'birthday concert' gift from Sean (a bit early) and I was looking forward to it for MONTHS! So as we drove into Hollywood (about a 40 min drive) I was thinking about how quickly this guy's music had grown on me. Only 4 months ago I heard "Volcano" because I was in the right place at the right time, and then one night shortly after that had a bout of insomnia which exposed me to VH1's airing of the Volcano video. I was instantly hooked on Damien Rice and knew that I MUST get the chance to see him perform live someday. So it was with a very serious attitude of gratitude that I walked into the Henry Ford theater to get ready to see Damien. The theater can hold up to 1300 people or so, I think. But here's the catch.....it's only got seating up in the balcony (3rd floor) for about 200 people. The rest of the theater is 'standing room only'. Since we were not there early enough to get seats upstairs (which btw, were not all that great anyway) we joined the 300 or so people downstairs all milling around in the 'orchestra' section, also known as the 'ballroom'. Basically, it's just a wide open floor at the foot of the stage, with a bar area slightly raised in the back of the room. There were NO tables, chairs, nothing... just wide open standing space. Sean and I hung out at the raised section of the room there b/c the view was better from there, and the stage was still not that far away. I'll tell you the most challenging thing was knowing that I'd have to stand ALL NIGHT to watch the show.....it made me appreciate the value of a seat, for sure. The theater is a historic little landmark in the Entertainment district there in Hollywood, so we walked around for a bit to check things out. (Walking into the theater was cool, too, b/c you forget about the walk-of-fame 'stars' that are out there lining the sidewalks until you are actually stepping on people like Yul Bryner, Gene Kelley and Rudolph Valentino, LOL.) We were treated to TWO opening acts. The first was a singer/songwriter named Annie Steela. (Now, I'm not sure about the spelling of her last name, and I couldn't find a website for her....). She's originally from Michigan, now living in L.A. She played keyboard and sang about 6 songs. Really nice. She reminded us a bit of Sarah McLachlan with a little Eddie Brickel rolled in....a strong clear voice with a fair amount of a bluesy/folksy sound and a pleasant performing personality....she was entertaining and really set the mood. I definitely want to hear more of her music. Pedestrian came out next. This L.A. band has been touring with Damien all over, and they must have mentioned about 5 times how great it was to be back on their home turf...even though only about 3 people in the crowd knew who they were. LOL Their music compliments Damien's style very well, I think. I was really impressed. For one song, they had Vyvienne Long, Damien's cellist, come out and join them on stage and the crowd went nuts when she came out. Pedestrian did a nice set of about 8 songs, 2 or 3 of them I REALLY liked a lot. I'm already checking out more of their music. You can check them out HERE: www.pedestrianmusic.org/html/index_music.htmlOne of my favorite songs was "Oxygen". OK, so after Pedestrian's set, the D.J. from KCRW came out to introduce Damien... She said something like....I had the pleasure of meeting Damien and the band yesterday at the radio station and seeing how I am myself a fan of their music, I used all kinds of adjectives to describe how great I think their music is, and he is so very humble he said, 'No please don't use all those flowery adjectives!' So instead of standing here giving you a list of all the wonderful adjectives to describe his music I'll just introduce him without the flowery introduction....and that's perfectly fine, actually, b/c really his music genuinely speaks for itself. So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen....Damien Rice! The crowd, which was already on its feet, cheered soooo loudly. It was clear that most of the people there were truly fans. We watched him come out with his guitar taking his place at the center mic, and as the applause slowed down we could hear the beginning strumming to Delicate. OMG. The band members came out from both sides of the stage to take their positions and the stage lighting was dimmed so it was hard to see them all at first. Vyvienne sat to the far left with a very chic upright Victorian floorlamp lighting her space around the cello. It was a nice setting....almost like a relaxed living room atmosphere. Ok, I'll go song by song now... Delicate~ This is the opening track to Damien's first full-length album, "O". (btw, if you don't already own it, go buy it!) It is in fact a very delicate opening and Damien was smiling and looked so happy, so READY to be there....So the crowd was all nodding and clapping and just embracing every note......Then, the unthinkable happened....(!!) [to be continued next post....]

Delicate~ Ok, so Damien is at the microphone, Vyvienne in her chair, Tomo on drums and Shane on bass.....everyone playing along. I knew from the tour listing that Lisa Hannigan, Damien's right-arm woman, vocally speaking, was not scheduled to appear at the any of the U.S. shows on this tour b/c she was in some theater production in Ireland, so I was not looking for her. But there was something strange....a 2nd empty mic stood to the left of Damien....I was just noticing it when the music came to the part of the very opening lyrics in Delicate that go "We might kiss, when we are alone...". And I realized Damien's mouth was moving and in fact I could hear his voice but the microphone was NOT WORKING! ARRRRGH! OMG, the next 30 seconds or so were a whirlwind of frustration and delight blended together in the most peculiar way. And I could tell I wasn't the only one who thought so. Poor Damien....Sean and I looked at each other, just as everyone was doing, trying to make sense of it all. We could hear the instrumentation, but we could not hear Damien's voice. He shrugged and stepped away from the mic to the right to come to the front of the stage and sing w/out the mic (loudly!...and thankfully it's a fairly small theater so we could hear him, still, but that's sooo not good for his voice!). So many things were happening.....Shane, the bassist was looking up to the soundbox in the balcony raising his arms as if to say "where's the power?",.... Damien was shaking his head and half-smiling, STILL singing, not giving up, he tapped the mic with a finger but still no sound.... We, the crowd, were now following with Damien to the chorus line in the song, "So why'd you fill my sorrow....with the words you've borrowed.." and we were singing TO DAMIEN to support him, people were shouting out, "it's ok, we love you...keep going", and our singing filled that whole room...it was amazing, it gave me chills....while the sound guys upstairs were apparently trying to figure things out, and poor Damien....gosh I felt so bad for him....my head was spinning with all that was going on. And then I looked at the dim-lit stage and paid attention to Shane squatting down, trying to plug things in while Damien's standing there still singing without a mic....and Shane's tapping the the other empty mic to the left, and good ol' Tomo is on drums....keeping the music going along with Vyvienne who by now is fully working her cello and wearing the cutest expression on her face as if to say "This is NOT happening".....and then I saw her: Lisa! She had been squatting down behind Vyvienne, waiting for Delicate to end, but the hustle and confusion on the stage brought her out of the shadows to try to help Shane figure out the mic problem. OMG!!!!! The crowd was going wild! I don't think people had expected her to be there....I know I certainly didn't. (If you know Damiens' music and are familiar with Lisa's singing on his album you'll know why I was soooo excited to see here there! They are like peanut butter and jelly together....and I walked into that show perfectly happy to have just peanut butter but now I was getting the whole sandwich!!!!!!!! I was beside myself!...no, actually, Sean was beside myself and HE was beside himself, too!) Whoa. I was in shock and thought to myself....Great, I'm gonna faint and it's the first song. Thankfully, SOMEBODY figured out how to turn Lisa's mic on. Damien stepped over to it and started the 2nd verse over and finished the song from there. We all applauded and he looked spent! LOL He's the cutest darn thing....He said to us (and we got SO quiet) "Well, this is just our fooking look (f'cking luck!)". Everyone laughed, and he did, too. The band was just shaking their heads....He told us that during soundcheck everything was fine, and that he's sorry, that they'd gone a whole tour long with no problems this bad, and now at the final stop in the U.S. this would happen...figures. He told us he'd use Lisa's mic while they tried to figure out what was going on.....he said "there's something 'spooky' going on up here, so bear with us..."
Insane~ LOL, those of us who knew this song laughed when he started it....I think he chose it b/c it was fitting for the moment and also b/c it didn't include Lisa's vocals, seeing as how at the moment she had no mic. It's a slow song....he started off and got only 2 lines into it when Lisa's mic popped and fizzled. UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE. Now, there was a true test of patience happening......a test of the crowd's patience (not the hardest part, we love the Man!), a test of the band's patience as they attempted to keep playing, but mostly a test of Damien's patience....I could tell he was REALLY "PASSED OFF". But he is SO very gracious and we were all applauding him and at the same time we were all sighing....He kept going....he got to the line in the song where he says very quietly "This is....INSANE" And we all cheered. It WAS insane! He finished the song, just him and the guitar. By this time every techie in the place was up on stage behind him plugging and switching and dragging things....it was crazy! But somehow they managed to get power into both mics....so he told us Ok, let's try this now...and he stepped over to his mic, which has the distorted mic attached to/below it...and Lisa was at her mic. They did some sound-checking, and I thought it was so cute b/c he just kept popping his lips into the mic and at first was saying this is tooo poppy, toooo poppy, pop, pop, ya, toooo poppy. And he was testing the distorted mic which sounded fine, but ya, distorted. LOL They finally got it right and I could tell he was ready to do something super high energy and I was soooo hoping to hear the song he did next....
Woman Like a Man~ Wooo! At those first mean strums of the guitar I got all hyper...Sean, too, this is one of his favorite songs. So there was still an uncertainty in the air.....Lisa was giving signals to people off-stage about higher or lower...and Shane, too. You could tell they weren't comfortable. But Damien's voice was strong....and he started the song off great.....however it was very obvious that the mics weren't exactly perfect...the distortion was pretty wacked. We were getting sound and he finished the song, but it was somehow not as energetic as the song is supposed to be....it's an extremely raw feeling and sounding song when done properly. Lisa provided her excellent backing vocals for the song and Damien really did his best to rock with it, despite the technical difficulties. So he finished and he told us...."Um, you know what? I'm going to call for curtains for about 3 quick minutes here. We have some kind of fooked up spooky shite going on up here....something definitely got changed since soundcheck and we cannot go on like this. I'm so sorry and I appreciate your patience and we'll be right back.." Curtains came down, we all felt so bad for him and we also were so hyper now having been 'teased' by his music only to sit there in the dark for what seemed like an eternity....and I was STILL in shock that Lisa was there. It was now about 10:30 pm and he'd only done 3 songs!
The Professor and la Fille Danse~ Ok, this was my most favorite part of the night (well, so far). Curtains went back up about 10 min later and Damien is standing onstage with the guitar over his shoulder, holding a bottle of wine! LOL I KNEW what song was coming next, especially b/c Lisa had put her hair up in hat/beanie....LOL, he stood there and talked to us again....he was VERY chit-chatty with us in the coolest way, despite the sheer anger/frustration/disappointment he must have been feeling over the beginning problems.....So he says "You know there's nothing better than having KCRW give you such a glowing introduction only to come out and fall on your face like that!"...in a really sarcastic voice...We all laughed. He thanked us again for being patient and told us that they tried everything they could to fix all the problems....that he was working with 2 broken pedals up there (and Tomo said "ya, you can buy them off e-bay tomorrow!" lol), and for us to please bear with them b/c they STILL had a problem that caused what they were hearing in their earplug things to be completely different from what we were hearing, so that they were playing by knowing how to play it, but what what they were actually getting in their ears was a "really fooked up version of what you are all hearing out there.". Many people from the crowd shouted out more words of support, etc. We just wanted him to keep going! He said they had wine to celebrate this final show of the tour and that they had to break into it early. LOL, I didn't blame him! He did his little laugh, and broke into The Professor....it's a very lyrical song, telling a story and at the end Damien and Lisa sang the lyrics in french together and it was superb! You have to see Lisa in action to fully understand how adorable she is....she sings much of her words with her eyes closed, her hands and arms are often twitchery a la Alanis, and yet she has this calm grace about her that just mesmerizes you.....she's beautiful. I was SO enjoying every moment of that song. It brought a really fun energy to the crowd and that, in turn, seemed to put the band at ease.....we were now ready to be blown away....

Volcano~ This is the first song released off "O" and the first song that made me (and clearly, many others) fall in love with this guy....As soon as it started the crowd went wild with applause. Lots of lighting onstage and lots of energy filled the entire place. Everyone was swaying/dancing....EVERYONE. The whole room was moving. It was awesome. Lisa...what can I say...her vocals on this song just make it. I didn't want this song to end...but oh, the ending! I kissed your mouth and the whole overlapping of the voices was just so wonderful...and Damien practically yelled "YOU DO NOT NEEEEEED ME".
Damien talked to us again here. He told us the next song came from one of those times that we all have where we "feel like, well, you know, like you just don't give a ...(big pause) FOOK about a fooking thing, you know?" And he went on to tell a story about how a friend of his invited him over just to chill with her and she had the most spectacular big open window next to her bed, so she let Damien take her room while she stayed with her sister...she said just lay there and look at the sky and let things be for awhile. So he did. And he told us he was so hopeless, just looking for anything in that moment, trying to figure out life, what he was doing....and as he looked up at the sky he saw a falling star and thought "wow, cool". But then he said, that's great and pretty and all, but I really need a sign....and then he said he saw something that he'll never be able to explain...it was something beyond words and he was inspired to write this song...
Amie~ Ahhh, this song is so pretty. Vyvienne makes this song the masterpiece that it is with her wonderful cello playing.....It was about 10 times prettier than the album version because Damien really sang it with so much beauty.
[ok, from this point on I'm not 100% sure of the song order, but that's ok....I do know that all these songs WERE played, but just not sure of the order, exactly.]
I Remember~ Lisa starts this one off... It was the first moment of the night (the first of many, actually) where the crowd was silent....taking in her every word. "And time stopped moving..." You could have heard a pin drop...or in our case, you could hear ice clinking in drinks being served at the bar in back, lol. When she ends her part of the song, just before Damien started his part, the lighting changed with the music and everyone on stage looked down. It was really neat...very theatrical. Damien let his vocals rip...."this is love, this is porn"...totally powerful. He's amazing with the high notes..."I wanna HEAR what you have to say about me..." So good. Cool lighting as the band was jamming to the end and again, the whole crowd was moving with it. [Carly, I thought of you....especially when Lisa was singing. ♥]
Older Chests~ Damien was very calm and quiet with this one. On the second verse, on the album version of the song, there's a background sound of children playing and people talking....when they did this live Tomo was doing something with the percussion that made it sound similar...it was cool. Time, there's always time.... It was so beautiful the way they sang this together, Damien and Lisa.
Baby Sister~ Oh, my, this is a very melancholy song. It's almost haunting, actually. Lisa and Damien were singing as if they were pleading...it was so moving.
Lonelily~ Totally excited that I was getting to hear this! I hadn't heard it at all yet, so it was interesting to match the lyrics (which I knew very well) with the music that was brand new to me. It's a good song, and made me want to come home and order all his EPs that I don't yet have.
The Blower's Daughter~ Four very short, very meaningful words brought the hands of every person in the room to the wildest applause: "AND SO IT IS...". Oh, it was great! Damien smiled at us as we clapped and smiled back. This is definitely one of his most popular songs off "O" judging by the response. This song made all the couples in the room 'couple' even more....especially on the "I can't take my eyes off of you" part. Oh, sheer beauty with the lovely music and just Damien singing....but then add Lisa's little 3 line bit in the middle and I was a mess. When the song ended I was craving "Cannonball" SO VERY badly b/c that's the order on the album...
The Blower's Daughter, Part 2~ Ok, it sounds silly but I'm really not sure if he did this immediately after or if perhaps there was a song between the Blower's Daughter and this one...it's the first time I've heard the song, so I was just too busy listening to it! It's an interesting Part 2...where the original relays a sense of longing and denial, this one has a sense of wanting finality. Another 'glad I got to hear it' song.
Eskimo~ Damien talked to us again before doing this one...he actually talked here and there all night, but I can't remember all the stuff he said, lol. He told us that back in the day when he was with his band Juniper, the record label people wanted him to do all kinds of things with his music that he just didn't want to do, for the sake of commercialization. They wanted him to write a catchy 'poppy' tune. He got fed up with being pressured to write and had a little fit, breaking one of the guitars back then...and as he picked up the guitar his fingers fell on the strings in just the right way to start the beginning of the song that's now known as Eskimo. He said from that day on, he never 'tried' to write again. Ok, this song blows me away! Always has from the first time I heard it. Vivyenne worked her cello magic throughout and the whole song was just layered with so much good stuff. Damien's guitar strumming was building and building until the chorus, which was so soft and pretty....the crowd was delighted and singing along "I look to my Eskimo friend..". Lisa sang the pretty finnish opera lyrics solo while the music exploded and carried her with it, and Damien joined back in at the end for that "when I'm down, down, down" quiet finish. The song went from soft, to explosive to very restful. Beautiful. [Jenni, as I was listening to Lisa singing the Finnish lyrics I thought of you....and marvelled once again at how music can connect people who may otherwise may not have 'met'....and thought about licorice, lol, and so many other things. I'm so thankful for you translating those lyrics b/c I was thinking about the meaning in them when she sang. ♥]
Childish~ Damien said "ok, this next song is dedicated to myself." LOL We all laughed before we had any idea what he was going to play....Then he said something I'll never forget: It went something like this... "Um, about an hour ago I was ready to say screw this and take a hike down Hollywood Blvd and let everyone get their money back....I'd really been "passed off" and needless to say having the tantrum of my life back here while we tried to fix all the problems. I mean shite after shite after shite was happening, it was unfookingbelievable. But I knew that wouldn't be right, and you know, sometimes we musicians get pretty full of ourselves, and we just need to sit back and take it all in, and not be so childish. I started thinking about how much I enjoy doing this (performing) and that you know what?...I really do enjoy being human, and I think if anything, you all got a pretty good display of that humanness tonight (audience cheers, laughs and yells lovely words to him). So this is for me" LOL, I figured it was going to be Childish....he basically was having a terrific laugh at himself and the whole fiasco-riddled night and we were laughing along right with him. He said it in such an honest way....it was very admirable, I thought, and made me love him even more. This is a cute, catchy, very sarcastic song. It was really fun....at the end he 'plays trumpets' with his mouth on the distorted mic. We all clapped along...very cute.

Damien said he'd like to let Vyvienne have the stage now for a special performance....Well, I knew what was coming... the band members left the stage and Vyvienne rocked!...LOL
Purple Haze~ Ever heard this Jimi cover done on a cello? ONLY a cello? (not you, Carly...I already know you're 'experienced, babe' lol!) She was too cute! She sang along in her very syrupy sweet voice....the crowd shouted along with "Excuse me while I kiss the sky" (or 'kiss this guy', depending how you grew up singing it, lol). Oh man, if that wasn't something unusual....then Damo and the rest of the band came back on stage and they did the song in full....it was stellar! Lots of energy.
Be My Husband~ Now it was Lisa's turn to shine....and groove and bop. Oh, this was so great. This is a Nina Simone cover song, but Lisa ups the tempo a bit. The best part was Damien sitting on the floor, tapping his guitar and Vyvienne over in her chair tapping, too, on her cello as well as doing the handclaps between Damien's tapping. That's the only 'music' in the song. Lisa's voice was like honey....just so good! It's a very soulful song, almost lamentful in a strange way ("you're the meanest man I ever seen"), but hopeful at the same time.

Yes, I was meaning to tell you all, Damien winning that prize was mentioned on The Dent because Tori was one of the judges.
BTW, any of the DR fans tried the "Prague" experiment yet? Our two concertgoers know what I mean!
Only man I know who can say "Prague" so it rhymes with "bag"...

1. No, but I easily could have done the experiment today. I fell asleep listening to "O" but the volume was down too low. Next time, next time... 2. LMAO! I'm going to have a hard time pronouncing it the "correct" way from now on.

The thing is, i have to SLEEP to do it.... Right about now I could use a shepherd... The cutest thing today: Picking Ali up from her Brownie Scouts meeting, getting in the car with "Cannonball" playing and her singing really loudly: "So come on, couraaaage, teach me to be shyyyyy".
