Anyone else here into their music? If not, CHECK IT OUT! They are a band from Washington that's been around the underground scene for about a decade, but just getting more 'popular' with their last 2 albums.... There is NO way I can accurately describe their music with just a few catch-words, but sure, 'punk, rock, indie, quirky, emo, and artsy' have all been used to describe them in recent reviews. They get compared to the Pixies quite a bit, but I actually like them better than the Pixies. I think their lyrics and their overall style are much more interesting and innovative. And the music just GRABS me. They've got a new album out this year called Good News For People Who Love Bad News. Sean and I are completely loving it. You can check out their music clips at their site, but really some of the songs are all over the place and you really must hear them in full to get their overall effect. It would be like telling a Tori novice to go listen to clips of 'Past the Mission' or 'Yes Anastasia' or 'ICSNY' and expecting them to get the full effect, you know? Near impossible. But at least you can get an idea of their sound. I got addicted to their first single from this current album called "Float On" (and Sean still IS addicted to it), but my favorite songs are 'The View' and 'Ocean Breathes Salty', along with the 'hardest'-sounding song, called 'Bury Me With It' (the lines in my sig about the paycheck are from that song). I mentioned this on the 'what last cds did you buy' thread (go read that post from today, too!), but these guys definitely have their own style and still manage to echo the interesting sounds of artists like Cake, The Cure, David Bowie, Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers, even Tom Waits in their music.. just to name a few. If you like those artists then definitely check out their music. Here's their site, where you can hear clips: www.modestmousemusic.comI also recommend their last album, The Moon and Antarctica. I still can't get enough of that one, either. You can hear clips from that album here: www.modestmouse.com/links.htmlThey'll be first-dayers on the Lollapalooza stage for several dates this summer. And here's a pretty fair opinion of their discography at AMG: www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll

Oh, one last thing: Best Buy (the music/electronics store) has the new album on sale this week for $7.99! Come on, you can't go wrong... run out and get it now! Bluey... Come say more good stuff about them! (what albums do you have anyway? Do you have that insanely-coveted 'Interstate 8' EP that's OOP and selling for $80-$100 on ebay?! I want it! I have 3 others besides the 2 I mentioned here.)

Mary I'll definitely check them out as soon as my 'puter gets its sound back! I've been craving some new toons Yay for that! I got an email from them (their site) saying that they have some songs in iTunes. (I know you're an iTuneser, lol) Apparently there are 2 songs that I MUST check out: "I've Got It All (Most)", which almost made the cut for the (new) album, but ended up on the B-side to the 'Float On' single. And "The Good Times Are Killing Me (alternate mix version)", the original version of the song before The Flaming Lips and Dave Fridmann mixed it and added some instrumentation (this is the final track on the album).

Jenni turned me onto The Rasmus (they're Finnish) and Alison even played their music as part of her project at school. Now their album just got released here and everyone's starting to notice it. Fun! PS- Ang, when you watched the Float On vid, the Rasmus vid came on right after, huh?! lol

Ok, Aims, as promised, I'm coming back here to list their albums for you. I'll also give comments below the albums, and list my favorite songs for the ones I own. Modest Mouse album discography- 1996 This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing To Think About , Up label *Pretty darn good for a starter album. It's got a really strong 'travel' theme to it. My favorites from this cd: Dramamine, Custom Concern, Head South (love it!), Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1997 The Fruit That Ate Itself K label *An album that’s really not breathtaking or anything…kinda more like and extended EP to me, as 2 of the 9 tracks are short instrumentals. I found a super-cheap copy so I picked it up. Enjoyable, but there are FAR better MM albums to purchase first. My favorites from this cd: The Waydown, The Fruit That Ate Itself, Karma’s Payment [/I](love it!) [/color] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1997 Lonesome Crowded West, Up label *this was their 'breakthrough' album and what got them moving toward major-record label. I really like this album quite a bit. It’s excellent gritty-rock about everyday things with lots of catchy lines, yet clever writing. There are some beautiful photos in the cd booklet, depicting the ‘lonesomeness’ of the crowded West… very nice. My favorites from this cd: Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine (man, it goes all over the place and I love it!), Heart Cooks Brain (love it!), Lounge (Closing Time), Doin’ the Cockroach, Long Distance Drunk, Styrofoam Boots/It’s All Nice On Ice, Alright ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2000 The Moon & Antarctica Epic label *My 2nd favorite of their albums, every darn song is stellar and they work together to make a great album. I can listen to this over and over... Some of their darker songs and their best lyrics and themes are on this album. A strong overall theme is evident … They explore mortality and the earth‘s life and the possibility of our afterlife. Sure, it might sound morbid or like it’s a downer, but it’s NOT. I love how their songs go in so many different directions and the jumpy parts truly rock while the quiet bits are truly stunning. It’s the first MM album I bought. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes non-boring music that makes you say ‘wow’ at least 10 times while you listen to the album. My favorites from this cd: Third Planet, Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes, The Stars Are Projectors, Paper Thin Walls, I Came As A Rat, Life Like Weeds-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2001 Sad Sappy Sucker K label *note: Sad Sappy Sucker was to be their debut album in '94 but it was shelved. Instead, This is a Long Drive and the Intersate 8 EP were put out in '96, becoming their 'first' LPs. SSS got released years later as their 'lost' album. It's got a wild/strange/obsure combination of stuff. Brock is such a weirdo (or a genius).... he put songs on his answering machine way back then and they could only be heard by calling in to listen to them. LOL These dial-a-song tracks, as they're now called, are included on the album (most of them are very short, obviously... less than 30 seconds), along with some other obscure songs, making it a favorite among fans. I don't have this one yet, but the opening song, Worms Vs Birds is interesting. This is the only album release of theirs that includes that song. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2004 The Moon & Antarctica [Re-release, Bonus Tracks], Epic label *different artwork from the original with all songs remastered (although I don't think it needed it, the original is AWESOME.. we do get some more 'foregrounded' vocals and the music sounds stronger in a few spots... mainly the guitar, but it's not very noticeable to me). The 4 bonus songs are from the BBC radio sessions...all of them regular album tracks, nothing rare but decent recordings. IMO, the originals are better than these radio sessions. Plus they BLEEP the f word in Third Planet, one of the best songs ever, and it's really stupid. It’s a shame they even put this version of the song on the disc. Boo. My favorites from this cd: Same as on the original and from the BBC tracks I do like the version of 'Custom Concern'... it's instrumental (the original has lyrics) and there are cool fingersnaps or something in it. Also, 'Tiny Cities Made of Ashes' is pretty good for the fact that we hear some nice echoing of Isaac's voice that we don't get to hear in the original... but the trip-out part I love ('does anybody know...') is nowhere near as intense as on the original (which is highly distorted compared to this one), but then again he offers a softer approach to those vocal lines here that I rather like, too.---------------------------------------------------------------- 2004 Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Epic label *Their latest highly-anticipated release. While I thought it was going to be awfully hard to follow M&A, they did NOT disappoint with this one. It’s my favorite album now, and I’ve had it less than a month, so that says something. It’s got everything… their punk trip-out edge, their deep guitar-rock moments, Isaac’s wacky voice being its amazing wacky self, darn amazing lyrics and ideas and some of their best choruses ever. Very catchy and grabby if you’re into that sort of thing, and yet still just ‘off’ enough to maintain their own brand of artistic talent. Plus tons of playful, clever stuff… banjo, interludes that work, and humorous ’outtakes’ here and there. They string along this collection of very different songs by tying everything into a theme of (gee, they like this one..) death and the afterlife. But, ironically, at least half the songs are darn happy-hyper tunes. The deeper quieter moments go from downright scary to really making me think. I love music that does that. And I love the arrangement/order of these songs. Also, I think Isaac’s voice sound better than EVER, and the backing vocals on this album really make the songs rich. Sure, you can tell this is very slick and shiny compared to their early indie days but I like where this band has found themselves with this album. My favorites from this album: The whole thing, really, but especially Ocean Breathes Salty, Float On, The View, Bury Me With It, One Chance, Satin In A Coffin... =============================================== From the albums above there were several singles, too.

Now, I'm going to list some noteworthy EPs and a compilation cd that are very worth checking out: (this is not their full EP/compilation discography, just the ones I recommend) 2000 Building Nothing Out of Something, UP *This is a compilation album made of their early singles and rare tracks from their Indie-label days. It includes the recorded tracks from their Interstate 8 EP, too. A great way to get familiar with their beginning-stage sound as a band. Very under-produced sounding and raw-punk sounding compared to their more recent ambient, flowing stuff. My favorites from this cd: Never Ending Math Equation, Broke, Interstate 8, All Night Diner, Sleepwalkin’, Other People’s Lives -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1996 Interstate 8 EP [recorded songs plus live hidden tracks], Up label *Ah, put this up on ebay and watch the MM fans go crazy bidding like ducks fighting over the biggest crumb of bread thrown in the pond. Total fan favorite, it's out of print and hard to find. Cool artwork, all good tunes (especially the title track) and you get the 6 live songs at the end (hidden) which are from MM's demo tape they originally sent to Up records when they first started. This EP was made at about the same time as This Is A Long Drive... I think the only one of the recorded songs that can't be found elsewhere is 'Edit The Sad Parts' (a great sad song), but the other 4 are on the Building Something From Nothing cd. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2000 Night on the Sun (the 12 '', not the EP), Rebel Beat Factory label *You'll likely never find this. It's pretty rare now. Released only on vinyl. But the very good news is that all 4 tracks (the title track being one of my most fav MM songs) are on the Everywhere.. EP disc below. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2001 Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks Sony label *A nice little gem of an ‘album’, even though it’s technically an EP. It’s over 30 minutes of their more mellow work. Actually there are some outtakes and a remix/medly from the M&A album that are quite nice, as well as the 4 tracks from the Night On the Sun EP, plus 2 new tracks. I bought this for the song Night On the Sun, but I’m so glad I did because I really like the whole darn EP! My favorites from this cd: Night On the Sun, Here It Comes, You’re The Good Things, Willful Suspension of Belief, Air (a medly of M&A songs)
