Oooh, she's good.

The clerk at my music store recommended her to me last week. I had never heard of her before. I sampled her new album in the store (he saw I was buying PJ Harvey's latest and said 'OMG, you gotta hear Carina!') and I was blown away. Loved the whole thing so much I didn't want to stop listening to it....

She's twenty-something, a British 'singer-songwriter' (that term is getting so overused, but really she's the real thing!). Her overall style and musical approach has been compared to PJ as well as Tori, Chrissi Hynd, Beth Gibbons (Portishead) and many other talented women.

I'm in love with the song 'Lacuna'.
I think the entire album is fantastic.

Oh, interesting tidbit:
The UK release of the album has the 'scary face' artwork on front, the US release has the 'normal face' artwork on front. They each have the other on their back side. (So my US album has the scary face on back.)
Carina explains it as the album reflecting both sides of her in her music... we get both.

Ooh, not bad.

I've been having trouble lately where any female singers I encounter are just too mellow and blah for me... could just be I'm not going through a "mellow" stage in my continuous music cycle right now but whatever - I'm sick of all this soft shit.
Which is why PJ and Tori have remained such strong faves for me - because they're not wimpy crap.

So by the sounds of it, this chick doesn't fit into the boring blah category. And that's lovely.
I wonder if amazon has little clips of any of the other songs... I'll go check it out tomorrow.

Had a listen to the lil clips of a couple of her other songs on amazon, and as a result have slapped her onto my wish list.

Now I'm just trying resist the urge to "add to cart", as I'm trying to save money.....
But I see the 6th Sandman book (which I NEED) is finally in stock again so I dunno...

Seriously, I'm listening to her today saying "Aims should SO check her out"!

Yay!

And Jay, I think you'll like her, too.

Something about her reminds me of PJ, but also kind of Fiona, too.
I really like her voice... it's very strong yet very pretty.
And the music ROCKS!

Aims, some of the songs on the last half of the album are a bit more quiet than the first half... but by no means wimpy!

Actually, out of the girls she's been compared to, I thought I could hear more of a Beth Gibbons vibe than Polly...
And now that you mention Fiona, I think maybe a bit of her too.

But that's only from listening to two of the songs once, and little snippets of two other songs.

Ok, my copy arrived today, and I have to say.... what planet is that music store clerk ON?!
Because, in my opinion at least, she sounds nothing like PJ Harvey.
Personally, I hear more similarities to Fiona Apple and Beth Gibbons (which people have already mentioned).
Obviously she just gets lumped into some sort of square with PJ Harvey because she's british. That's so lame.

But ANYWAY: that's the only thing about the general situation that ticks me off..... because this album is great! (ooh where's the damn thumbs up smiley? when's he coming back? we need him!!)

I really like it. Yes, really
