Some events are perfectly timed; when to arrive, when to leave. This evening felt like that. I had really only wanted to see Howie when I first bought this awesome ticket, close up to the stage. Thing is, the headliner was some group namned A.O.R. which I know nothing about. Matt Nathanson rocks pretty good but didn't realize he had already been on and off the stage when I wandered into the audience. A soft drizzle penentrated the audience but that couldn not dampen the mood of us in the front. Hey, this was Howie!
Howie has a good band backing him up, with some great solos by the pianist/guitarist. His duet interactions on the final song (with the bassist, drummer, and pianist) shows he can work welll with the whole crew. Plus they all get to benefit from the looping, like at the end of "Promise."
Nothing like having a whole row to yourself, right close up to the stage. The rain could not keep me from enjoying this show.
He kept on commenting about how patriotic he felt. It wasn't until you looked back to see what he meant. Counted out 11 U.S. flags flying in spite of the spattering drops, and the obligatory beach balls flying around the floor. Yes, it does feel good to see a sight as stirring as only one could see in this country.
Afterwards, while A.O.R. was preparing to take the stage, I wandered to the side to use the facilities. (They were in such a sorry state.) Upon my exit, I spotted some frantic young blondes grabbing onto the fence going out into the parking lots. "Do you guys like Howie?" They confessed that they did and were watching him from a distance while talking with some fans OUTSIDE the fence.
I knew right then that in order to get my CD cover signed (the one I bought in Chicago almost two years ago, with the Daze label on the back), I would have to leave the venue and give up my great seat. I rushed right out and around the fence. Got to meet him for a short time and he signed the cover. AWESOME!!
