With the most sincere apologies to Sam, I got almost nothing by way of review to say about Godsmack as we got there 3 songs before they left the stage!
However, what I did hear was incredible, and believe me, I'm going back! We entered the arena hearing "Voodoo" [we were still in the lobby at that point], and damn near ran to get to our seats [bathroom stop first, of course! ]
*Sheepishly admits that they sat for 45 minutes at the Katella off-ramp before WISELY deciding to take an alternate route and try an off-site parking lot... this from the guy who told anyone who'd listen that heavy metal acts NEVER take the stage on time, they always go on half-to-an-hour late... Um, no, they go on stage RIGHT ON TIME... MEANING 7:30pm you JACKASS!*
We were treated to a spectacular drum-duo with Sully and Shannon bangin' away... this went on for well over 10 minutes, and turned into a medley of sorts with what was some obvious tributes to Rush [Neil Pert, I believe] and Led Zeppelin [Bonham, of course].
The drum solo ended with Sully paying [verbal] tribute to Metallica, generally psyching the crowd up, although we really didn't need it at that point! The band then finished its set with "I Stand Alone," complete with crowd contribution [yes, we were THAT good!]. Damn they rocked... I'm really PO'd we missed so much of their act...
However, I WILL be out to buy "Faceless" sometime soon this week... or next [it is Xmas time, you know, I gotta' save up my pennies for the kids! ].
Sam, as I sit here typing I'm wearing the absolutely coolest concert shirt that I've ever seen/purchased: black, long-sleeve "Godsmack" shirt with the band name in flames on the front, flames running down each sleeve, and all the tour dates on back [with the "Faceless" album name down the middle]. Hell, I even wore it to Target today...
To be continued...

LOL. Yes, Godsmack does play on time, hehehehehehe. I should've told you this! DOH! OOOH! The Shannon and Sully (yes, he is actually quite fond of playing the drums. He use to be a drummer, but now he mostly plays guitar and sings. But of course he has to do the drum solo with Shannon. It totally rocks! I'm so glad you 2 got to see it!) drum solo..... This is what I did when I saw it: that and moshing and having a grand ol' time of course, lol. WOOHOO! I'm so glad you have the coolest (but it may not be as cool as the one I have for you, hehehehehe. And Mary can't tell you about it either. And yes, I know I'm evil, muahahahaha) concert shirt ever! And when you buy Faceless, buy The Other Side. Seriously the best acoustic album EVER! Can't wait to read about Metallica!!!! *hugs*

*Enters arena... Has to ask usher to repeat instructions as he does not believe that she just said: "all the way to the bottom, second row up"... Meaning: we were one row up from the first... Meaning: there were yellow-jacketed security guys after that first row... Meaning: after those dudes were people standing [2-deep, at the most] next to the stage [approximately 4 feet off the ground, about 40 yards long and 20 yards wide]...
MEANING: WE WERE 20 FREAKIN' FEET FROM THE STAGE!
In all my years I have NEVER had this good of luck getting primo concert tickets! Damn, I'm glad it was THIS concert!
The stage was set up as a gigantic rectangle with a circular rotating riser/drum kit in the middle so that as the show progressed Lars' drum set gradually rotated around so that everyone had him in front of them. There were microphones positioned around the stage in 15' increments so that the musicians could move around and walk up to any microphone at the point they needed to sing.
Ahhhhh, now for METALLICA!
*Arena goes black... the overhead monitors [which we could only see by leaning way back and straight up] start playing scenes from Clint Eastwood's "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." Ennio Morricone's haunting "The Ecstasy of Gold" grew louder toward its climactic crescendo, and, as any Metallica fan knows, is indicative of the band taking its place on stage at that very moment--of course, given that we were so close, we could see 'em being hooked up by their stagehands... Man. I've never had chills so bad... and the crowd was so DAMN LOUD!*
Still darkness, James commences with the rising strains to Blackened, off the "Justice" album, and then we see him standing up on one off the risers, with a very bright light bulb in his face, belting out: "Blackened is the end, winter it will send, throwing all you see, into obscurity... The only lights in the arena were on him; dressed all in black, short-sleeves with obvious new ink running up and down his arms [since James has given up the booze he's obviously been spending more time in the gym! ;D], his hair was slicked back and short, with a close-cropped beard. He looked healthy, strong, and... happy. We were glad to see it.
*Mary: "hey, he's kinda' cute... Did I mention to you I have a crush on him, too?" This as he's--did I mention that the stage was only 20 FREAKIN' FEET AWAY?--standing right in front of us at one of the many microphones positioned around the stage*
Of course, James welcomes us all to his little party, beseaching "Anaheim" to get behind him; no worries, we were already there... this was the LOUDEST arena that I have ever been in--these fans were screaming from start to finish [2 and 1/2 hours later], with absolutely NO SITTING ALLOWED! Then, they broke into "Give me Fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire!, and the place exploded all over again! Everything was tight; not a chord was misplaced, the drums were in sync, and Hetfield sounded like he'd just finished recording it in studio... Two songs in and I was overwhelmed... That and I thought M was gonna' lose it when the flames shot up out of the stage, singing her hair [she blames the hair-dryer, but I know better--we were that close!]. As soon as they stopped, James asks if anyone remembered the "Kill 'Em All" album *ohmigod, he's not gonna' try a song off the holy-grail-of-speed-thrash-metal-albums-recorded-before-he-hit-puberty, is he? He DID! They broke into my one of my top six [really, my number 2] of all Metallica songs: The Four Horsemen. I was in complete meltdown: I have never played air-guitar so long and so loud; nor will I ever again. They were so good that even the wife was moving [i.e., like a real headbanger!]. Someway, somehow, James was able to capture that voice from way, way, back when... and he sounded awesome. And, given that he was sober, he was able to keep up with the speed of the song. I have heard that song "live" on various recordings, so I almost hoped they wouldn't play it just to save its dignity; I'm so glad they did as it absolutely kicked ass!
Okay, by now I'm trying to figure out how it is I'm gonna' make it through the rest of the concert as my andrenaline level is spiking through the roof--I still can't believe how close we were, I was sorta' hoping that one of 'em would either spit or spray sweat on us [yeah, that close!]. I look over at the beautiful wife, now clad in her sexy "St.Anger" tank-top [um, yes, form-fitting ;D ], and she's in obvious need of something a little more slow-paced [remember, she's a rookie to this speed-metal stuff]. The band graciously obliges with her all-time favorite Metallica song: No Leaf Clover. For this one James got up on the riser, with the green spotlight illuminating him, and bellowed out: "...it's just a freight-train comin' your way... Ah, she was in heaven! Again, with the band members moving around we had at least one of 'em in front of us [yeah, 20' away!] for every song!
After a little small-talk, James' asked us if we all had the new album [uh, yep; the first day]; he then exhorted us to unleash our anger as he broke into Frantic, the only song played off their latest release. The song was tight, the vocals smooth, and seemed to indicate that they might break into a more traditional concert based off the last album. But no, that was the only Anger song played; M and I were just a little bummed as we'd hoped to hear the title track and "The Unnamed Feeling." Oh well, next time I suppose...
After a little darkness and Kirk Hammett guitar soloing, James again mounted the riser to break into ballad with The Unforgiven. This song seemed to carry some weight for the band, as it felt emotional; much of that probably had to do with the crowd singing along [as an aside, I normally hate when artists have the crowd sing the chorus to their songs; this night, however, it felt just right... and appropriate]. At the end, James told us as much when he said that he forgot how much he loved that song until he sang it again [for the first time on tour, perhaps?]...
After that breather, James warns us that he's going to go back to an old favorite: Holier Than Thou. This was the ONLY song that Mary did not know, and, to her credit, it took me a moment to get there myself... Not one of my favorites, but it jammed, and got us all amped up once again [yeah, like we needed it! For the record, at this point I was officially without voice... sorry James, you're gonna' have to do it alone tonight!]. To be continued [again]...

Gah! I'm so excited for you!!!!!!!

Back to the show...
The God That Failed came with an unexpected intro as James told us it was about doubt, fear, betrayal, and at the end, faith..."it's about gettin' through the tough times to get to the good times," then boom--the band explodes into song: "I see faith in your eyes, never you hear the discouraging lies, I hear faith in your cries, broken is the promise, betrayal; the healing hand held back by the deepened nail, follow the God that failed..." The stage then goes black... a pause, then... those haunting strings that evolve into Welcome Home(Sanitarium) [my blog-site name, of course!]... If you've never heard this song, go listen--it will make you a Metallica fan. If you've never heard this song live, well, you've never heard ANY song "live"... As the song nears the end "Fear of living on, natives getting restless now, mutiny in the air, got some death to do...", it is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to refrain from belting out the lyrics back at the band [or jam on the air guitar with the heavy metal headbanging shake as the wife was doing as she didn't know the words ]. This song blew me away... They could've stopped here and I would've been happy... BUT NO, THERE WAS MORE!
The band then gave "Mr. Robert Tru-hi-jo" [according to James, with a wink] a little bit o' time to impress with his bass solo--including placing it up on his shoulders so that he was quite literally playing over his head! He teased us a bit with a little homage to "...And Justice For All...", the song, but it was not to come, as the band busted out into: Sad But True. Again, another crowd explosion . This song absolutely blew the walls off that arena: "Hey, I'm your life, I'm the one who takes you there; Hey, I'm your life, I'm the one who cares!...
As we all attempted to gather ourselves, the onslaught continued, as Battery was next. Now, as any Metallica fan knows, they tend to end with this song, so, I'm figuring that we're do for a little break and an encore... and I was right! But this tune did not disappoint as they played just as loud and quick as they did when they first thought of the damn song; again, James hit every high strain--he found vocal chords that he hasn't heard in 15-20 years [I'm guessing he gave up the cigarettes as well as the beer]. In any event, it was an incredible [fake] show-ender, and worthy of a 10-minute screaming ovation . Although we were spent, one look at the watch told me we had at least another 45 minutes ahead of us...

Okay, so now the arena is black but for those tip-off stage lights that let us know they're coming back [for me, I always look at the arena house lights: if they don't come on I know we're getting more music! ;D]
And then, that middle-eastern [or is it Asian?] guitar twang, of course it was Wherever I May Roam! Again, we exploded... 'But I'll take my time anywhere, Free to speak my time anywhere, And I'll redefine anywhere, Anywhere I roam, Where I lay my head is home... Da boyz' hit every pounding note, every lyric, every bridge... This song was magic. Now, if you know Metallica concerts, their encore is not one of these 2-song jobs with a "thank you, goodnight!" [ahem, Coldplay...]. No, we were in for some serious mayhem... As James took the riser, we knew it would be something slow [they brought him a special mounted guitar for this]: Nothing Else Matters. Now, as some of you know, this one is for me and Mary; we love it, and we've claimed it is ours ['cause I'm sure no one else has]. It was absolutely beautiful; we held each other, sang along, smooched... It was everything one could want for a rock concert. Again, as we come off the ceiling, the band [and stage] exploded into Master Of Puppets--my all-time favorite Metallica song. Hell, this ain't no song, it's an anthem! Much, much, MUCH, crowd singing on this one, but of course, I loved it as I was one of the main culprits [I've never sounded so good! ]. What was particulary cool about this song is that the band knows what it means to it's fans--they seemed more intent on watching us then they were in performing. Not to say there was anything wrong, it's just that as they belted it out, it was obvious that each band member was getting off on watching their fans sing each lyric back at them, strum each guitrar lick, and pound their air guitars. This song was too much... I was not worthy!
But then, from overhead, we could hear the voice-over from the movie "Johnnie Got His Gun"... including film clips. As the movie played, so did the war-time noises that accompanied the movie: bullets, explosions, fireworks... Of course, the band helped us out by blowing up the freakin' stage! Mary about died! She had her fingers in her ears for the rest of the night! [sidenote: back when the band played Fuel, and the firebombs broke out, her seizure-like reaction provided great comic-relief to a couple of the yellow-coats standing down in front of us; she didn't disappoint them for the encore! ;D ] Then, the haunting guitar strains of One filled the arena, leaving no doubt as to where we were going. This song is generally credited with bringing Metallica mainstream [not sure why as it is pretty damn heavy, and not semi-poppish as those on the "Black" album], and the crowd let the band know how much it [we] loved it... Again, we could've stopped there and I'd have been happy, but nooooooo... James starts the guitar, and instantly we all know what's next: Enter Sandman. Mary and I helped him out on this one, both with guitar and lyrics; sounded perfect--the only way we could tell it wasn't lip-synched was because he kept interjecting "Anaheim" into his lyrics; he needn't have worried about our participation, we were with him every step of the way!
And with that, the band ceased... they walked [individually] to each edge of the stage, thanking us for making it such a great show... there's nothing quite like making eye contact with the lead singer of your favorite band as he thanks you [pounding his heart ala Sammy Sosa style] for coming to his concert... That was somethin' else....
Now, at this point, I had forgotten the old lights trick [see above], but I figured they'd played 5 songs, they MUST be done. And, to reinforce the idea that they were done, they were throwing out handfulls of guitar picks [yep, I got one from bassist Trujillo] ... So M sez: "I'm gonna' beat the crowd and go to the bathroom, meet you at the top."
Oh, she was wrong... [To be continued, again, again, and again!]

So M walks up the steps while I stay behind trying to grab a wayward guitar pick being tossed about... I got these two psychopath women next to me who've been inflicting serious bruising to my right side the whole concert suddenly intent on filling the void left by my lovely bride... hah, fear not, m'lady! I kept those nasty broads at bay! Of course, I'm thinking: the show's over, why are they crowding me? What an idiot... [as James pointed out a moment or two later...]
All of a sudden, as the clean-up guys are breaking down the stage and the band members are throwing out all their picks [and yes, the house lights are coming on], some dude runs out and hands Hetfield his guitar [picture Tom Hanks in that SNL skit where Aerosmith was on Waynes World: "sybillence, sybillence..."]
As James starts working his guitar, I see Lars running to grab some drum sticks and get his way to his drum kit--again, the adrenaline goes through the roof. Disposable Heroes starts, with obvious import given the times: "Back to the front, You will do what I say, when I say; Back to the front, You will die when I say, you must die! Damn, it was good. I kept looking back for Mary, but she was not gonna' make it back for this one... I kept rocking; I figured she'd want me to!
Okay, now I'm spent... Totally 'zausted... Gotta' figure out where to meet the wife, but then... James sez: "Do you want one more? After 5 minutes of teasing us with that [you know, if we get loud he'll play, etc.], the band launches into their final song of the evening: Seek & Destroy. This...could not... have... been... more... freakin'... appropriate...
The very FIRST Metallica song that I ever heard was "Seek & Destroy"; introduced to me by none other than my baby sister . This was off the "Kill 'Em All" album, and if you remember the time [yes, I know many of you were not allowed to listen to such music way back when, ahem, Carly ], this album came out with such fools as Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, and Ratt. Thus, the only way to hear Metallica was to listen to FM radio after 10pm; thank god my little sister decided that it was worth bugging me about!
Anyway, we--the crowd--finished the show by nearly singing the whole damn song. You know what? That's as it should be. The band wanted it that way, the crowd wanted it that way, and any other way just would've been wrong...
The band again thanked us with guitar picks and personal "thanks" as each member made his way to every corner of the stage, professing his love for every fan in attendance. I can't tell you how cool it is to make eye contact with someone frome your favorite band--to let 'em know in that split second that for a few moments of our lives we were totally connected, in sync, and in the same place. It is very rare that I have that kind of emotional experience for anything, let alone a heavy metal concert...
I should've known better.
This was METALLICA!
Some random thoughts, notes, asides...
Mary was absolutely beautiful [ahem, HOT!] in her blue low-rise jeans, black clogs, black tank-top [to later be replaced by a Metallica black tank-top], and lavender/black cover blouse. All accompanied by her leather jacket, of course! While she was up in the lobby waiting for me to come up [you know, the 2nd encore that she missed], she got hit on by some dude asking her if she was "available." M's response: "I'm the least available woman in this building... Of course, he didn't seem to care [again, she's not too experienced at these heavy-metal gigs ], but he eventually moved on as she didn't instantanteously start making out with him [Isn't that what happens at headbanger concerts?].
The pyrotechnics tended to reveal her heavy metal inexperience, but that just made her more adorable in my eyes [and the security guys', I imagine!]. What was so damn wonderful for me though, was watching how she'd be sorta' still at the beginning of each song till she recognized what they were playing... then, with the hands in her back pockets, head bangin' with the beat, she'd be right there with me on every song...
The funny story about this concert is that over a decade ago I saw them when they toured with Guns 'N Roses at the LA Coliseum. I took Mary's sister Amy because Mary didn't want to go; she just wasn't into it. This has been a source of some family amusement for some time now [more so because Amy fell asleep for almost the entire GNR set, but that's a story for another day]. In any event, it meant quite a bit to me to have M with me for this one... It meant even more to me to have her experience and love the music like I do... to understand what it is about this fabulous band that drives me to play 'em [thereby ostracizing our neighbors] as I do my yardwork every weekend...
Simply put, I felt as much love and joy by her reaction to Metallica's music as I hope she felt having me by her for the Tori shows we saw over the last two years [and, obviously, I am a huge Tori fan now!].
This was my mostest-favoritist-Thanksgiving-weekend ever! ;D
Thank you all for indulging me in reading this nonsense...
Ahhh, I almost forgot... The Set List:
Blackened Fuel The Four Horsemen No Leaf Clover Frantic The Unforgiven Holier Than Thou The God That Failed Welcome Home(Sanitarium) Sad But True Battery ------- Wherever I May Roam Nothing Else Matters Master Of Puppets One Enter Sandman ------- Disposable Heroes Seek And Destroy
[/b] Mary just reminded me that I gotta' give 'em a concert rating... Well, what do you think? In the words of the immortal--ahem, mythical-- Spinal Tap, I give 'em an "11" on a scale of 1-to-10! [/color]

Ok, first off... L.M.A.O. at the "sibilance, sibilance" flashback.... OMG, that was so darn funny reading that just now. Can I just say that my husband has spent the better part of FIVE HOURS typing all this up! Holy keyboard. Sean, you did such a great review! I felt like I was actually THERE with you. Ok, seriously... Honey, I had a BLAST with you! ;D And I mean that quite literally, too, since we were treated to quite a few real pyrotechnic blasts there at the stage. WTH... How come I was the only person in the entire arena who was jumping out of my skin when those VERY LOUD blasts would go off?! The poor young kid-security-guard in front of me facing our seating area was doing his darndest to keep his very straight "tough guy" face on all night, but when he saw me jump for the 3rd time, he just couldn't control himself and laughed. LMAO, I pointed at him and said "don't laugh at me!" As for the band, the music, the show... I was truly TRULY impressed with how awesome the entire thing was. They all sounded SO great, the stage was set up like nothing I've ever seen and the overall energy for the ENTIRE show was just unreal. I really could NOT get over how close we were. I mean, I could see James' pores on his face! Plus they played No Leaf Clover... after that nothing else matters. LOL, but it ALL mattered. Every song was blowing me away. And I really enjoyed watching you enjoy yourself so much. You were like ... a kid in a candy store doesn't even come close... you were just so so happy and free and in the moment with the music. It was awesome. Also, I can't believe you just embarrassed me with all that talk about what I was wearing (thanks for not mentioning the unmentionables) but I love you for adoring me. And that guy who hit on me while I was waiting in the lobby was really funny. He was obviously drunk, so it was difficult to be flattered... I got a bigger kick out of his face when I gave him my comeback line so quickly and told him to just keep on walkin'. I don't think he's used to responses from women with actual brains. And you didn't mention that my sister WAS at this show with us (way across the arena and up at the verrrrry top in the nosebleed seats) and she managed to stay awake this time! LOL It was really cool to have her and her boyfriend there, too, and talk about it afterwards. We were all so high from it. There's simply nothing like sharing live music with people you love who love the music so much. I'm so grateful we got to do that together yet again. Thanks for a headbangin' good time, lover.

Great review!!!! Reading it was like having it play though my head! *Of course, James welcomes us all to his little party, beseaching "Anaheim" to get behind him; no worries, we were already there... this was the LOUDEST arena that I have ever been in--these fans were screaming from start to finish [2 and 1/2 hours later], with absolutely NO SITTING ALLOWED! In any case, I would see the perform no matter what they played because of the reputation they have for their shows. The stage then goes black... a pause, then... those haunting strings that evolve into Welcome Home(Sanitarium) [my blog-site name, of course!]... If you've never heard this song, go listen--it will make you a Metallica fan. Yeah, I would agree! ;D

Man, I still can't believe we were there, that we were that close, and that it was that good... I've been to many shows [this was my 3rd Metallica concert, the last being over 10 years ago], and I've never experienced anything like this...
Thank you all for taking the time to read my rantings; if you enjoyed it a little bit as much as I did, then I'm certainly glad I shared!
