again... one of my favourites and no reply so far. i adore her voice in the chorus... it gives me goosebumps (in a good way), and i just can't get enough of it. and i agree - a life without love isn't worth very much.

Oh, Matty, I love you so much. Which is why it pains me to point out that you and I have EXACT OPPOSITE favorites. I've seen your posts about the songs you've mentioned and I have to say that this song, Ireland, Cars and Guitars, and Goodbye Pisces are all at the VERY bottom for me. In fact, this song IS now the very bottom for me. (I will say that I like the 'life without love' lines... I mentioned that in my long review post) This is a good example of a song where I kind of like the chorus part but just get so bored on the verse part. And it doesn't help that I know Hoochie Woman, which I love, is next and I always want to get to that one. All that marching-like drum music -- I feel like I'm in a parade and I just want to sit down and put my hands over my hears to drown out the band! Her voice is sweet-pretty, but I prefer that sweet-pretty sound found in songs like Sleeps With Butterflies better. Btw, what's the story with the meaning or 'canvas' of this song? Anyone know? Is she referencing Martha Washington? Who's Martha? what's going on?, now that I'm spending all this time saying how I don't care for the song someone explain it to me. LOL But anyway, like you said elsewhere, "I still love you, though."

I've seen your posts about the songs you've mentioned and I have to say that this song, Ireland, Cars and Guitars, and Goodbye Pisces are all at the VERY bottom for me. You know what? I now realize how much I love reading these reactions to the songs because of the reasons that people differ with their favorites so much! How can I explain it... it's kind of refreshing to have surprise moments like " You like this??". With that, I'll run here and say that I love this song! I can see your point, Mary. The song itself wouldn't necessarily shine if it wasn't for the chorus (which I adore). I think that while I first paid attention to the chorus, it made me also extend my interest towards the rest of the song somehow. I like the drums but I can't really say what they remind me of. Luckily not marching music, like in your case! I still haven't done my Martha-research. Should should. ;D

My gosh, I LOVE this song! It's gorgeous voice, gorgeous piano, and even the percussion is gorgeous! Seriously, when Hoochie Woman started, I found myself still lost in the wake of Martha. No jokes!! And, to keep with my string of 'I love the way she says' posts (lol) I'll just say that I love the way she says 'ginger'.

Oh, Martha's Foolish Ginger is a boat!
Many thanks to yessaid.com:
"I started writing this one years ago, when I was close to the water, on tour somewhere. I had only a seed idea of it, but it has stayed with me for a while now. On the Lottapianos Tour during the summer of 2003, when we were in San Francisco, I was by the bay again. The song began to come back to me. Once again I began to understand the female character I needed to embody, I was able to finish the piece, but a real turning point was when I was able to see the character's boat, which she called Martha's Foolish Ginger: sailing out of the bay and into the Pacific Ocean." [Tori Amos: Piece by Piece]
"I've got one song I've just finished which only had a title - 'Martha's Foolish Ginger' - and a chorus: "If those harbour lights had just been half a mile inland who knows what I would have done". I've actually been working on this song for eight years but couldn't figure out how to finish it. Then I suddenly realised the title was the name of her boat. And with that it was liberated, unlocked and everything came clear!" [Word (UK) - February 2005]
Wow, it's been quite a while in the making!

Ugh, sorry, Helen, I DON'T like the "Ginja". Jenni, I agree. I like that we all have different favorites! (and I like predicting them, too!) Ok, folks, here's the deal. It's good news (for whom? who cares?! lol). I'm liking this song more. I like Goodbye Pisces WAY more than this one, still, but it's rising from the bottom. The chorus still is my favorite part. And the drums are seeping into me finally to where I'm not distracted by them. So, yay. Or whatever. LOL

Oh, thanks, Hels! I had that Martha research on my list of things to do Monday. (I know, silly, but it's true!)
How great that the boat is one she imagined in San Fran! Whoo hoo for THAT city by the bay!
Makes sense that it's a boat, but I wanted to know who the boat was named after! In other words, who IS Martha? I thought with all the drumbeat music, which felt marching-like to me, maybe it was a throwback to an older time, and THAT famous Martha I'd mentioned. It would work well with the Creative Mothers deal/theme in some way, seeing that Washington was our first Pres, etc etc and Martha would be the female counterpart or whatever -- you know how Tori does that, lol) But I guess it doesn't matter so much.
It is such an intriguing title just alone, I think.

We do need more dirt on the foolish-ginger-owning Martha, though.

1. I'm starting to like this song a bit more. 2. My uncle says it sounds like The Sopranos. "Here comes Gandolfini..." he goes when the song starts. LoL... But nevermind, cos whenever he listens to Goodbye Pisces he says it reminds him of a chinese city, he says he even sees the red chickens hanging... And then I get all upset cos I love GP... LOL

LoL. He's veeeeeery nice. Maybe a bit tired of listening to The Beekeeper all day long (we share our studio at the seaside house). He even knows all of the songs and sings them, lol, his TPOOK and Ireland versions are adorable. LoL. And about the song... I dont know, I dont dislike it that much anymore I guess. I did kinda hate it for awhile, I would skip it everytime. But now it's ok. Maybe I get to love it soon, lol!

I wish I could get dad interested in Tori again. The funniest thing I get out of him is his quirky Greek-Australian accent. He pronounces her name, 'Torri Ah-moss' lol!

I love this song cuz of the line in Helen's signature but mostly because of the entire last verse. Ya know, "memories..." cuz it gives me a melancholic feeling and that's always been my favorite feeling in the whole world. i give it 9/10 just cuz i always keep singing "if those snowboard's lights had just been a half a mile inland" and that makes me irritated.

AHAHAHH!
We were listening to the Beekeeper, and Martha's Foolish Ginger came on.
You know the drums?
K. goes with his best news anchor voice over the drums:
"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court..."
AHAHHA I'm still laughing! Now I'll just keep on thinking Mr. T with Tori on the pier: "I ain't getting in no boat, foo!!"
(For the ones who don't know the reference: the tv-series A-Team)
EDIT: I can't believe I spelled "pier" as "pear"...

I'm surprised at the negative reaction to "Martha's Foolish Ginger". It's definitely one of my favorites from THE BEEKEEPER but anyways, my favorite lines are "life without love isn't worth very much" because of the honesty and heart of that and it just touches my heart so much when she says, "If those harbour lights had just been a half a mile inland, who knows what I would have done." because it makes you think of how you would change things if you had a second chance or perhaps when something happens not knowing what you would do. I also love "I couldn't speak, my hand reached for Martha's Foolish Ginger." It makes me think of a dream, the fact that she couldn't speak and that she is reaching for something.
This is my interpretation of it:
I think this song is definitely about memories and how we dwell on them so nostalgically sometimes. In this case, I think she was looking at a place where she spent lots of memories and then someone from this memory came up to her. Because of this amazing meeting with these circumstances, she was speechless as I would be. She just made another memory but she couldn't speak and now she is thinking about what she would have done if she could.
