A few years back, I was in a very difficult phase of my life. I guess, looking back, it was almost like a depression. There is this woman called Tori Amos, who has had a big part in all this. Her music, amongst other things, gave me a lot of comfort and hope. I'm writing these lines just to let you know what the following means to me.
[/cheesy and tragic part - on to the funnn]
Astrid and I went to Munich yesterday. We arrived at the hall around noon, hopeful to get a glimpse on Tori and maybe getting to talk to her at the Meet & Greet. It was a terrible heat and I had to pee during the whole stay at the stage door. I'm a very bullheaded person, so leaving the scene for more than 10 seconds wasn't really an option.
Luckily, Sandra's peeing-misery was rewarded with the greatest thing: Meeting Tori.
I was always a bit scared of the thought of meeting her -she's such a huge idol for me, I guess I was afraid that she wouldn't live up to all the expectations I had. I had heard endless stories about how kind Tori is to her fans, but we all know how fans tend to idealise their idols. In case of Tori, everything I had heard is absolutely true. <3
The thing I loved the most about her was that her affection seemed to be real and that she took a lot of time, not only signing autographs and making pictures, but for actually talking and LISTENING to her fans. I told her how much her music had helped me during hard times, and we were all in a sudden enganged in a little conversation. She was very devoted in everything she did, something I haven't seen before when meeting famous people (big exception: Viggo Mortensen). But then... how could I ever for a SECOND think that Tori was just "one of those common famous people" - what an awful label to give her!!
I now think I have understood a little bit more what her music is about, and at the same time it's such a mystery. But don't we all love the mystery? He he.
At this point I'd like to give a shout out to all the people I met at the Meet and Greet, esp. Ravi! We all had a wonderful time.
I hadn't seen Tori solo yet, so I was quite curious how it would be. I'm a fan of the more powerful songs that are played with drums and bass, who are funky (in a toriesque way) and which just heat up the hall. I expected that Tori wouldn't be able to put up this feeling all on her own, although Tori + Pianos is ecstasy. Unfortunately, the ecstasy wasn't as big as it used to be at the last show.
First of all, I blame the bad acoustic in the hall. The microphone was way too loud compared to the pianos. I also hated the audience, who had no respect whatsoever for what was going on on stage. They got up in the middle of the songs to go to the loo or get a drink - WHATEVER! I mean, do you do that when you're at the theatre or anything? Why the hell pay 63 fucking Euros if you're not really interested in the hard-working artist on stage?
The third thing was the playlist:
Original Sinsuality
Icicle
Blood Roses
Take to the Sky
Jamaica Inn
Silent all these Years
Strange
Feelin' Groovy
Red Rain
Doughnut Song
Barons of Suburbia
Mother
Taxi Ride
The Beekeeper
Power of Orange Knickers
Suede
Cars & Guitars
Cooling
As you can see, the playlist wasn't really full of powerful songs - but that's probably just my opinion, everyone perfers different stuff. Unfrotunately, no single of my faves. I wish she had played something from Choirgirl or from Scarlet's Hidden Treasures. I really should have requested "January" or "Apollo's Frock", she played 2 requests from the Meet & Greet.
I wish she had played more songs instead of playing some of them in double length (which can also be very cool, but somehow wasn't this time!)
Last time I saw her she played 45 minutes longer and a better selection, with both very fast and powerful songs, as well as the slow emotional ones. It had been the perfect mix.
Don't get me wrong, I still loved every minute of it, simply because it's Tori. I guess Tori solo is more for hardcore fans and Tori + Band is more for a common audience. I don't label myself "common audience", but I was simply disappointed that she didn't do a single of my personal honeys.
The highlights were "Silent All These Years", she got very emotional. Jamaica Inn moved me to tears, and Cooling was just the pergect last song!
I read that people thought that yesterday's playlist was super-great. I guess it once again shows how versatile Tori is, which is a very wonderful thing. I love this woman, no matter what!!
