I'll start out first by noting that the drive to Wallingford, Connecticut from Maine is a LOOOOONG one. I think if I had had more than one night to recover, it wouldn't have seemed so exhausting. But it was well worth it.
Wallingford is the most charming town! I loved it. We had to get directions to find the theatre, but it was fairly easy to find. It was nestled in this lovely wooded area, and I was shocked by how small it looked! I had been told it was small, but I guess I just wasn't imagining it as quite that small. We were also surprised that it was called the Chevrolet Theatre instead of Oakdale. I guess it had only recently been changed. Luckily, it said Tori Amos Tonight on the front billboard, so we knew we were in the right place.
We then went to find a hotel, and relax for the few hours before the show. We had to take an elevator to get to our room, and Alex ended up chatting with a man that was also from Maine. He asked us if we had been caught in the traffic, and that a tour bus had apparently caught on fire. I was so scared that it was Tori's.
Once in the room, I begged Alex to call the theatre and make sure the show was still on. I didn't feel like I could relax until I knew whether it was Tori's tour bus. He thought I was overreacting, but he called anyway. He just got a recording, but it said the show was on. After a few minutes of listening to his rational reassurance, I decided to relax. I took a bath and had a couple glasses of wine. Here are a few pics of me just before we left for the concert. I'm holding my ticket in my hand, although you can't see what it says.
Here's a pic that we had one of the hotel staff take of us in the lobby. It's kinda dark and grainy, unfortunately.
We headed to the theatre at about 6. (The show was scheduled to start at 7:30.) Here’s a pic of the theatre from our parking spot. We were laughing because we paid for preferred parking, but we didn’t really need it because the theatre, and thus, the parking lot, was so small! I took a pic of the parking sign because I was tipsy, and I thought it was funny at the time. ;D
Once we got inside, we were amazed at how nice it was. It was very small, and very casual. They were selling alcohol everywhere! (The downside to this was that people had to get up a lot during the show to use the bathroom, and it was kind of distracting..... ) They hadn't opened the doors to the auditorium yet, so we sat down to have a drink and I got to hear muffled sounds of Tori's sound check. Eeeeeeeeeeek! During this, I mentioned to Alex how much I wish Lauren could be there having a drink with us.
After awhile, we headed over to look at the t-shirts. I had never bought one at a concert, and I really wanted one. I was trying to decide between two that I really liked, but Alex told me to go ahead and get them both, and a poster, too. It was so expensive, but I was really happy. Here they are:
They finally opened the auditorium, and we found our seats. They were even better than I expected. In fact, there really wasn't a bad seat in the house.
Finally the show began with the opening acts The Like and The Ditty Bops. I thought they were both interesting. I wasn't sure I would actually go out and buy a C.D by either of them, but it was fun. I really wish that Imogen Heap could have been there, though.
Then, after an intermission (and another drink...hehe... ) Tori took the stage. It seemed like such a buildup to get to that point, and I was really excited and emotional as she started to play Original Sinsuality. It also really hit me that I was truly going to see her solo for the first time. Here's the set list (and my reactions).
Original Sinsuality- omg, omg, omg- I'm seeing Tori solo!
Crucify- Very excited to hear this one! I was very emotional and I kept gripping my drink cup tightly, and I had to keep telling myself to stop doing that or I'd break the cup and spill wine all over myself.
Caught A Lite Sneeze- Yay! One of my Pele favorites.
Winter- Very haunting and beautiful.
Icicle- I heard this one at the last concert I attended. I didn't cry like last time, but it always strikes a chord with me.
Goodbye Pisces- I enjoy the tune to this song; the words just don't grip me. But it was nice to hear it live.
Bells For Her- Now here, I cried. It was one of those rare moments where I have no control over my emotions and I didn't even realize I was crying until I felt the tears on my face. I thought of Carly during this song, and imagined she was sitting next to me, and we were crying together. I was THRILLED to hear this song. One of the highlights of the show for me.
So Far Away (Carole King cover)- Tori did a lovely version of this.
By My Side (cover from the musical Godspell) I hadn't heard this song before, but I loved it. I'm looking forward to downloading it.
Mary- I like this song a lot. Especially the acid rain part.
Take To The Sky- It was great to hear this live. One of my favorite b-sides.
Mother Revolution- I would say this was my second favorite performance of the night, after Bells For Her. This is not my favorite Beekeeper song, but Tori did an absolutely stunning job at singing it. I was really moved. I read a review from someone who heard this song many times on the last tour, and they said that this was the best performance of it they've heard. It made me really appreciate the song so much more. I really hope Diagnosed Sounds gets this one up so you all can hear it.
Yes, Anastasia- I immediately thought of Jason! I was so happy to get this because it's one of my favorite UTP songs. It was very moving. I adore the piano in it. Just lovely.
The Beekeeper- I knew I would hear this, and it was an experience to hear it solo. It seemed a little more personal and raw. I do think that over all, I like the album version better. I think it adds more heft to the song, especially the "wrap yourself around the tree of life" part. But it was really great.
1st Encore~
Cars and Guitars- I'm not nuts about this song, but I thought about Jason again and felt amused that I was getting two of his favorites.
Crazy- I've always liked this song. It reminds me of when I met Alex. The "unzip your religion down" part has always been very personal to me. I've been kind of afraid of that phrase because I thought it meant that you were abandoning your religion. But I think it just means becoming free of the chains of your upbringing, free to see and appreciate the good in all religions, including your own. It was great live.
2nd Encore~
Landslide- Always liked this song, and Tori did a great job with it, as always.
Toast- Very emotional, almost melancholy ending to the night.
It was a wonderful show. But I was so exhausted by the time it was over after traveling all day. I was really happy that we went, though. We were really impressed with the theatre. I would definitely make the trip to see Tori again there.
So, here ya go. Not too in-depth, but that was my show! Sorry it took me so long!
