Hi all, This may sound like a really dumb question. I am a teacher & I am putting my students into reading groups tomorrow. I want the groups to be named something. A lot of teachers pick animals or colors. I really want the group names to be something to do with Tori. But since I there are obviously boys in my class, I can't name the groups "the purple faeries", "the pink faeries", etc. I don't even know if I'm making sense. Can anyone help me? ~Jen

Much as I love Tori, I dunno if she's appropriate for Fifth Grade aged kids. Her songs are laced with sex, depression, acidic rants against religion... not that I don't like those things

Oh yeah, I definitely know that. I don't play her songs for them - although I wish I could. I wish that I could "brainwash" them into loving Tori. But, oh well, I'll have to incorporate her in subtle, appropriate ways. Her music is such a big part of my life, I would probably bring her into the classroom without even realizing it........ I have decided on the following group names: The Happy Phantoms The Space Dogs The Orange Clouds The Blue Raincoats The Northern Stars & The Purple People What do you guys think? Thanks for your suggestions!! ~Jen

Yes, definately good choices! I would have loved being in a group called The Space Dogs when I was a kid...even with not knowing the song!

pixiejen, Have you thought of playing Winter for them? I think it is a very appropriate song for kids their age. My niece was 10 or 11 when she heard Crucify and i could tell she identified with it. Have you thought of just having a tape recorder in the room and making a tape of some of her songs? I would leave out some, but Twinkle comes to mind as a song your girls might like, Precious Things, 1000 Oceans. I wouldn't push Tori on them, but make her songs available during free time? Or play some of the quieter songs during reading? I really believe your girls would benefit from listening to Tori, and the boys too, though it would be hard for them to find a way to say so. I am jealous, I miss working with a classroom and children. I'M home with my one and a half year old nnow. Some good teaching advice i think is invite them to bring their favorite songs to your classroom. Then, you can introduce Tori as your friend. They may not be mature enough to like Tori yet, but it will settle inside them what Tori is to you and then they may be able to find something like her for themselves.
