Ok, so orfeo's avatar (the burning piano from Boys for Pele) reminded me of a question that I've had in my head for quite awhile: Since Tori pretty much views her pianos as human entities, do you think it pained her to see a piano being torched? It's like they burned her best friend! I don't really expect anyone to have an answer to this but I wanted to pose it anyway. Maybe I'll ask her at the Meet and Greet in Duluth! Then I'll be able to sleep peacefully again...

Isn't there also a photo shoot of a broken up piano strewn across a field? ;D
I read somewhere that for the "Winter" or "Silent" video the director wanted to break up up a piano and stick it through the hole, but Tori refused to do it to the poor piano.

I have always wondered the same thing and then it occured to me in the boys for pele picture that maybe this was a piano of Tori's that was maybe broken or on it's last leg ya know and needed to be disposed of but instead maybe the piano wanted to be cremated so Tori torched it I mean Tori is the one who lit the piano on fire. It's really a good question. I'm very interested to know why myself. If anyone has any answer to this let us know! PLEEEEEASE??? Luv, Haullie

I think it's an example of what tori said that she was "throwing boys into the fire". Well maybe that piano was one of the sacrificies she gave to pele? I dunno, I'm rambling. LOL

I wouldn't be surprized if she associates pianos with men; something she learns to use and control, not to mention the way she gyrates away on the damn bench ...

Ok, I love your answers but I have these quotes which somewhat refute what you just said and confuse things even more... *sigh*
Tori works with two Bösendorfers, "the one that I own and the one that I tour with. The Bösey I own is very much a recording instrument, she's not into touring. She's eight years old now. She was in a church in New York City for a while where she got battered and abused, and she got shoved around every club in the city before she was in the church, so she just got the shit beat out of her in New York, and i felt like she and I understood each other, so, she had to be rebuilt kind of, and I just take really good care of her. She gathers her energy and then we put it into the record. The piano I'm touring with is a year old, so she's feisty and wants to see the world and check out boys multi-culturally. She was rotting in this showroom in London. So she's happy to be on the road with me, meeting all these cute dudes." -- All These Years Biography, pg.97
"You're not even thinking anymore (when performing), you just free your mind and express. There's nothing calculated. I don't play the piano, the piano plays me."

I kind of agree with Pat - the piano on fire is tied in to the Boys thrown to Pele idea. Actually, I think the whole point of the image is how shocking it is to a piano lover. The reason I picked it out of the avatars Haullie/Pat so generously provided is that - as a pianist myself - I find the image incredibly powerful. You just don't DO that to your instrument unless your'e seriously pissed off and/or making a dramatic statement. I've encountered dreadful pianos that are fit for the knacker's yard, but the idea of hurting them is still pretty awful. When my piano was moved into my house I deliberately stayed away because I couldn't bear to watch if anything bad happened to it. I just thought of something else. Wasn't it Jimi Hendrix who burned his guitars? He was probably just doing it show off though

Jimi Hendrix did set a guitar or two on fire.

Pat and Fearscape have it right.
I had a friend that, when he got really upset, would go home and smash a record up to bits. I did it once and it felt wonderful. When I told him about it, he asked me what record it was. It was one I didn't care about. He said that didn't count as much. It should've been only the records that meant something to me. In their destruction, you release the anger because they meant that much to you.
But I do wonder if that piano was in tip-top shape or if it needed a merciful death at that point. It certainly is gruesome to think of any piano being burned, regardless if it was on its last leg.
