You have to have a program specially designed for it (such as Adobe ImageReady, which comes with Photoshop) - you basically just make them as a little movie... You have the frames that you paste the pics into, and then there are functions such as fading and crossfading and stuff, which can be carried out automatically, so you don't have to do that yourself...
Quite simple, really, once you have the software...

Though my avatar at this site is static, I've made a bunch of animated gifs for other sites using (Macromedia) Flash. Also, Microsoft Gif animator is pretty simple and can probably be found online for free (it is usually packaged with Microsoft Image Composer).
I prefer Flash, myself.

i wish i even knew how to make anything with flash. we just downloaded the whole macromedia package on our computers (dreamweaver, flash, extension manager, fireworks, and freehand, and they're the new versions), but i don't have a clue. we're suppose to take an online course on macromedia, but even though we called and were told there were spots left, they told us that they don't offer this class for the spring semester.
we have photoshop 7, but i figured i have all of the other stuff, i don't really need it.
oh, well, i will learn this stuff eventually.

Jennifer, First I start by making a transperant gif. Then I make a series of transperant gifs that I want to fit in an animation and I save them all as transperant gifs. Then I open up animation shop in paint shop pro (You would you Abobe Image ready ) Then I place all of the images together to make a single animation. I view my animation and it will be transperant and moving from one picture (Frame) to the other. Hint: When creating an animation always open your pictures up from say for example 1 - 10 but the very last picture you open up should always be the very first picture on your list so picture 1 you would open up last. So when you do the image fader at the end of your frames it won't look like it's glitching to start over, it will just go smoothly and start over again. Love, Haullie
