My sister is moving in a couple of weeks to Florida. We've never lived this far apart, (I'm in Baltimore) and I'm going to miss her and the kids terribly. My niece and nephew are four and six years old. I've watched them grow into these little creatures, and now I am going to miss a big part of their lives. So I'm a little sad, and need some cheering up.

HUGS! (Too bad I don't know what would cheer you up, but if you stick here long enough the people here will know you well enough to do that properly )

here's what you need to do -- you and your sister each need webcams so that you can talk to the little ones and actually see them! it's a small consolation for getting to hug them all the time and take them out but it's a little something...
sorry!! i have some little nieces and nephews too that i know it would be really difficult to live far from. bright side -- visiting florida usually isn't too bad (flight price wise) and at least it's sunny!!!
hugs and snogs to you!

Thanks you guys. I appreciate it. She is leaving next week-end, so I am going to spend this week-end with them. Great idea about web cams, but she doesn't have a computer right now. They sold theirs to get gas money for the move. To think I use to joke about selling things for gas money. It doesn't seem so funny now that the price of gas is outrageous. I use to tell my cousin if he didn't have gas money to come see me "hey you could always sell your car for gas money." LOL Again thanks.

That webcam idea is great--you guys can maybe look into it later.
I think to help the distance you could start a little scrapbook/booklet you each write in at a time and then send it back. We used to have that as kids--just a cheap school notebook onto which we put stickers to personalize it. Then inside we wrote letters to each other. If I finished writing a letter in it, I would send it off to my friend, who in her turn would write a letter in it, include photos or poems, or anything, and send it back to me. You could do that to help patch the distance and then later to have a great memory of that time. It doesn't need to be hi-tech scrapbooking, just writing.
Hope you had a great weekend with her! Maybe soon you can go visit--sometimes the flight offers are crazy cheap if it's outside holiday season.
Gas prices... Ahh the bane of US. No wait, the gas price in Finland is double the price of the US, so I won't complain ;D
EDIT: Dur, apparently I can't count litres into gallons...

Also, when one of my friends moved away we started keeping booklet diaries... so writing a long letter in a booklet a bit by bit, once the booklet was full we'd sent it to the other person.

the scrapbook idea is great too. or even little video diaries!!
my bf has family in england (brother and his family, including two little girls) and we do the webcam thing. it really bridges the distance and makes it feel like they're not so far away after all... so when they get a computer, definitely suggest that!!!

*hugs* I know (almost) how you feel. My best friend, who has been like another sister since we were 10 years old, moved to TX last year with her two little boys (18 months and 4 years old, who are very much like my nephews). I miss her terribly, and share the same fear that I will miss them growing up. She sends pictures all the time, which is nice, but I think I'm going to suggest that notebook idea! She loves to scrapbook anyway. She could send it to her family, too. Fortunately, she is back in the northeast for a month this summer. She will still be 4 hours from me, since I moved as well, but still it's much closer than TX. I get to see her this weekend and next weekend. Anyway, I know that it can be tough. One thing that is nice is that all of the phone calls and visits become so much more special. On the bright side, this also gives you an excuse to visit Florida.

Hugs, honey. Even though you exist miles apart, your hearts will remain within each other. xo

Oh, the scrapbook idea is a fantastic one! Though it might take some time to keep up, I think it's something you might both enjoy. It seems so personal, too - you could put anything in it! Well, I hope you can remain in contact somehow. These long distance separations are never easy!
