Hey everyone, I am doing a literature essay on how Drugs have affected modern literature. Anything that you know about authors, books, whatever that has had something to do with the use of Opiates, Marijuana and/or Psychedelics would be greatly appreciated. I'm really just trying to open my scope of authors and ideas. It's a 10 page essay and it's due in December. Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. You can either post here or PM me. Alternately, if you know of a website or book that could help me, I would be grateful for that too. Much Love, Natasha~ xo

Have you read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? I think that would be a good book to fit in to your essay.

there's always been thought about Edgar Allan Poe with opium, if that's modern enough? we've been discussing him for awhile in my american lit class.

Yeah, Hunter S. Thompson would definitely be at the top of my list, nattie! For sure. Maybe some of the Beatnik writers as well - William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg. William Burroughs actually had this really weird 'Cut Up' technique he used for his writing. I remember a website called 'The Cut Up Machine' where you could type in a sentence or two, and it would randomly cut it up and throw in some random sentences from one of his novels. It was really fascinating to me, because the mood of it afterwards was very eerie, and some of it made sense! I'm going to find this website for you now. Ok, here we go: This website was the original one I found years ago, but the Cut Up Machine won't work there anymore. It gives some information about how he uses the technique with some of the drugs he was taking. web.archive.org/web/20001017172144/http://www.bigtable.com/primer/0013b.htmlHere's another site which generates the Cut Up technique, but it's not as good: web.ukonline.co.uk/gary.leeming/burroughs/cutup_machine.htmAnd here's a download link to use the Cut Up Machine when you're offline: web.ukonline.co.uk/gary.leeming/downloads/cutup.zipIt sounds like a fascinating topic, nattie. Good luck with your research! EDIT: Here's an example of something I put in the Cut Up Machine and how came out: Original text: Hey, nattie, just wanted to wish you good luck for your essay. My chosen text to be put in randomly: Billowing out to somewhere, billowing out, luna riviera. And here's what the Cut Up Machine did with it: Billowing billowing luna Hey, nattie, you good luck for out somewhere, out, riviera. wish forCan you imagine Burroughs cutting up stuff while he was intoxicated? Woah.... Hope this helps, nattie!

You're very welcome, nattie. All the best with it Pascy, I forgot about those French authors - they'd be very interesting and appropriate to research.
