To the petaly-est lil' chicken I've ever known... HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I feel like I should do something Heleny... like drink tea and look at trees with pretty pink blossoms while I listen to Alex Lloyd, and sit in a kid-pool of water while I watch Lost In Translation and... Oh, well, you get the idea! Love you, Helen. Happy wishes to you today and always, you beautiful woman. xo Mary

Happy birthday Herry fwend! I will eventually get to talk to you and give you audible good cheer! I watched Broken Flowers in your honour. Unfortunately, despite the warmth, I didn't fill up the kiddies pool as I've thrown it out. RIP little pond whom broke a gasket. Tis what happens when you mix people with alcohol and umbrellas.

Thankyou so very much, you wonderful people xoxox I'm sorry I've been an AWOLian for so long. I've been crazily busy, here in Nippon, but I am definitely still alive and dreaming. As I'm teaching nearly 400 kids these days, something pretty huge happens to my energy levels, and end up rolling into my futon with a not-completely-sucked throat lollie stuck to the roof of my mouth. Ok, I'm exaggerating a tiddle, but that's actually happened once before (with the throat lollie I mean, haha). So you guys, I had one of the best birthdays this year! On Saturday night, I had much a crazy dinner/karaoke time with friends and co-workers, and then on Sunday, my actual birthday...... : My manager, Eriko, and my friend and co-worker Brighid, drove me an hour north of Kashima, to an ORGANIC, BUFFET-STYLE restaurant!! It is nestled between a Japan Farmers' Association supermarket and a gorgeous plant nursery. A farm extends beyond the restaurant, and an animal play-area for kids (and adults, ahem). I saw goats, three pigs, a boar, a prairie dog (for the first time! Brighid had to tell me what it was!), some rabbits and guinea pigs, and butteflies and dragonflies galore. It was a snatch of some kind of utopian world, I'm sure. I got so much energy from it all, and I could really feel my family and friends with me. It was truly lovely. And the foooood! Hooley drooley! It was like walking into someone's kitchen.... tofu, noodles, autumn rice, salads, brown bread (!!! for Japan), croquettes, curries, and the JUICIEST apples ever. I bought a whole bag of them for twice as cheap nearly as the 'regular ones' at the supermarket. The chefs and waiters also sang Happy Birthday to me, and gave me a big pack of brown sugar! It's the happiest/healthiest I've felt on any birthday I can remember (despite the wavy hangover from the crazy night before). I also ended up buying two plants from the nursery, and kitschy, but cute Halloween candle holder. I figured I needed more green in my life, lol. I'll definitely have to find some photos from people with cameras on the day Thankyou again for your lovely birthday wishes, everyone I do miss this place. Lots of hugs and eency weency spiders back, ~Herrow Heren! xoxoxoxoxox

Yay I'm glad to hear that you had such a great time I saw a teddy bear today that made me think of you! You know those bears you get in giftshops EVERYWHERE... and they'll either have your name, or happy birthday, get well soon, whatever on them? Well this one had these wings and it said either "Petal Bear" or "Birthday Petal"... I can't remember - but you see the obvious connection
