does anyone else love aimee mann's music the way i do? i have all her solo albums and she's only gotten better over the years. i recently saw her in concert and it was all very... simple and acoustic. and i loved that. her latest record, "lost in space", is a cd everyone should have. it's simply beautiful. so, are there any manniacs around?

hello, dear!! Of course I would reply! Btw, one of my best buddies here, bluegirl, is another "manniac"..... Ok, I have all her stuff, too. I agree....Lost in Space is not only her best work, but it''s one of THE BEST albums ever, I think....I'm totally in love with it!! (and isn't the little cartoon booklet in it clever?! lol) I haven't seen her live (yet!) but she sounds just like you said....simple, acoustic, and sublime. I will see her one of these days... My all-time fav songs of hers are: You Could Make A Killing Sugarcoated Say Anything Save Me Deathly Red Vines Humpty Dumpty Pavlov's Bell Invisible Ink Btw, I've got Bachelor #2 & Lost in Space in my cd player right now, left over from yesterday (my son picked them out to hear yesterday...he's 4 & he loves the cd's for the way they are cardboard-ish & different! lol) ~Mary

glad i'm not the only aimee fan around here. they're pretty hard to find indeed. especially in europe - none of my friends has ever heard of her. but well, that's what i'm here for and i've done a good job "spreading the word", so far. i guess. lol. anyhow, what i wanna ask is if you two are familiar with the stuff she did with 'til tuesday. is it any good? what songs would you recommend? i never heard any of them (though she kinda played one at the concert i went to), so i'd appreciate suggestions. thanks in advance!

Alright you 'Manniacs'...I need some direction.
The first Aimee Mann song I heard was "You Could Make A Killing" on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack. I loved her voice and the song...so I decided to get one of her CDs. I chose "I'm With Stupid", b/c it had YCMAK on it, so I figured the other songs on there might be along the same lines of that.
This was about 4 years ago. I hate that CD. Once I heard the song "Superball", I nearly puked and could never listen to that CD again, unless I was making fun of that song. I was sooo disappointed.
Now, I'm not bashing her or anything, she must be semi-talented to do a song like YCMAK...I'm just thinking maybe this album was not her best?? Should I give her another chance by getting a different CD, or is "I'm With Stupid" indicative of all Aimee has to offer?

Give her another chance, definitely! I would recommend her newest CD, Lost in Space. I listen to it all the time.

Mandy, to be honest, (and i think i said this to you before a long time ago here when we were both new) I'm with Stupid is my least favorite cd of hers. Like matze said, she just keeps getting better and better. (although I also love YCMAK). But I'd DEFINITELY recommend her latest album, Lost in Space. I'm sure you would love it. It's very very refined compared to that "Stupid" cd (but i still like that one) and it's got a feel to it that (for me anyway) is similar to the Daybreaker album (our Beth!)....like the perfect combination of mellow, yet intricate songs that just feel good when you hear them & dance in your mind all day. "Bachelor No. 2" is another good album.....I can put it on & just enjoy the whole thing. The songs "Red Vines" and "Deathly" are soooo good. Her "WHATEVER" album is decent, too. I like it better than "Stupid". It was her first solo album & I thought a huge departure from TT. My favs off that one are: "I Should have Known", "I've Had it" [BLUEGIRL, I'M SO THINKING OF YOU RIGHT NOW! LOL], "Stupid Thing" and "Say Anything". I read that Aimee was part of a few bands before going solo, with TT being her most famous one, of course. I had the old TT Voices Carry CASSETTE! (LOL) a looooooong time ago (like back when it was released!) and it was one of my favorite "beach" tapes to listen to. It's been years since I've heard it though & I really need to get a new copy. They also have an enhanced "Retrospective" album with Voices Carry & a couple other songs I liked ("you know the rest" and "i could get used to this" and "noone is watching you now"). Granted, they sounded very 80's to me, still do (omg, the hair! lol), but her voice was still great then & some of the songs were pretty polished. (some were crap, tho! lol, IMHO) ok, that's my input... That, and her songs on the "Magnolia Soundtrack" are beautiful & I love her duet w/her sweet hubby, Michael Penn (I love his own song "Beautiful"), on the "I am Sam soundtrack" too. (one of my fave Beatles tunes, "two of us".) ok, for real, i'm done. I love Aimee! Mandy, give her another try! Get Lost in Space, girl!

time to revive this thread a little. reason? when you go out to buy "tales of a librarian" on november 17/18, you should as well check the aimee mann section of your favourite record store BECAUSE aimee is releasing a special edition of "lost in space" on the very same day tori's collection comes out. this special edition will feature a bonus disc with the following content: Real Bad News (LIVE) The Moth (LIVE) This Is How It Goes (LIVE) The Scientist (LIVE) Invisible Ink (LIVE) Nightmare Girl (b-side) Backfire (b-side) Fighting The Stall (Unreleased) Observatory (Unreleased) It's Not (BBC) i'm sooooooo excited! especially about the new songs to me ("nightmare girl", "fighting the stall" and "observatory") and about "the scientist"!!! i love that song, and i can't wait to hear aimee's version. plus, there are live versions of "real bad news" and "invisible ink", two of my favourite songs from "lost in space". in case you're interested, you should pre-oder your copy, because this special edition is limited to 20,000. i wonder if any of these will make it to cd stores here in germany...

I think I was probably the first Aimee Mann fan there ever was... I was 3 when I first heard 'Voices Carry' back in 1985. I have 'Til Tuesday's album 'Welcome Home' (from 1986) in LP, and it's actually quite good, like Aimee on her solo days. My favorite album of hers... It's hard to choose, I love them all, but I'll have to go with 'Lost In Space'. Flawless except for 'High On Sunday 51', which is her worst song her. My favorite songs are (in no specific order): 'Backfire' 'Wise Up' 'How Am I Different?' 'Humpty Dumpty' 'Superball' 'Choice In The Matter' 'Build That Wall' 'Jacob Marley's Chain' 'Save Me' 'Say Anything' 'Deathly' 'Driving Sideways' 'The Fall Of The World's Own Optimist' 'Sugarcoated' ... basically everything she's ever done, lol. Ihave my heart set on her. Always have.
