My own Amiee Mann Story: Between '80 and '85, I went to school in Cambridge, MA. This was probably the zenith of my Clash days. The best places to buy hard-to-find (vinyl) import singles within public transportation distance was one store in Harvard Square (I forget the name) and, on Newbury Street in Boston, Newbury Comics. (I didn't buy comics there as Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square was the best for comics in the area.) I would frequently buy records at Newbury Comics. A lot of the time, there was this austere-looking lanky blonde (short hair) working the cash register. I don't think she ever said anything to me, except the register total. Years later, I would see 'Til Tuesday and then it would hit me: Hey!! That's the Newbury Comics girl!! Yes, it is true. I used to buy records from Amiee Mann (well, not directly but you know what I mean....). ;D I really liked 'Til Tuesday. Definitely recommended. Thanks to Matze for his (and Mary's) info about the new album (special ed of "lost in space"). I will have to check it out!

That's awesome that you met her before anyone even knew who she was. Also- I'll be paying a visit to Newbury Comics tonight to get TOAL (the one in Salem, NH, not Cambridge)--it's nice to see another Bostonian on the board.

*faints after reading bexface's story of 'knowing' Aimee back in her Berklee days* veela, I think Lost in Space is her best work yet. I'd definitely start there (look for the limited ed. one that should hopefully be out by xmas, it's got the extra songs matt mentioned) Hellfire, I agree that High On Sunday 51 is her weakest song on the album, but that being said I still like it a whole lot! "hate the sinner, but looooooove the sin...." Also, it's funny that you mention comics b/c the artwork of the Lost in Space cd sleeve/booklet is cartoon/comics-like.

Now why didn't I know that? It does make perfect sense as Berklee is centered towards Mass Ave, only a few blocks from that area. Back then, Newbury Comics (and this truly was the first, hence the name; later it ended up branching out to the suburbs) was not within a block of Mass Ave as it is now (or the last time I checked, hmm how long has that been?). It was further down (east) on Newbury, about a block, perhaps two, further than where it is now. You had to walk up these steps, like a brownstone. Those are beautiful buildings. So I discovered. Today was when I first looked for any Amiee Mann album since... well, since Til Tuesday times. It was "Lost in Space." Very cartoon-like. Weird.... Didn't buy it as, per matze's comment, I am holding out for the one with the extra live CD!! o but I did just order TOAL and Mona Lisa Smile via the Dent. And the new PG hits/remix album and tour DVD (didn't win the contest, shucks! There's always some waiting involved but I'm sure it will all be good music!

so, did anyone get the special edition? i finally found it today after browsing probably every cd store in berlin. it was ridiculously expensive (like 30 us-$), but the live cd alone is worth it. i'm just listening to "the scientist", it's sooooo good.

Matt, I feel really foolish since, yes I did get it last Saturday as part of my Christmas shopping.... but it is still in its wrapper on my desk. Have been so busy putting out my newsy letter that I just haven't had the free time to give it the good listening that it deserves. (If you and Mary say its that good, than it deserves a REALLY good listening!) I promise to check it out this weekend and post a review here! K?

I am reviving this thread in order to disagree with you "High on Sunday 51" naysayers. I personally think "Guys Like Me" is the weakest song on that album. *ducks for cover*

WHAT?? ?? ?? ?? ? I think Guys Like Me is absolutely fantastic!!! I could listen to it 10 times on a loop and not get tired of it. it's an amazing song and it's so great and ironic that a woman is singing a song about guys like her.

Because I'm about to totally agree with Hellfire and disagree with my Cazlry! Yes! I think Guys Like Me is great, too! I LOVE the lyrics ( 'put your money on a bonafide heavyweigheigheigheight, and take it off guys like meeeeeee....')and the whole irony of her singing it, too. I kind of choose to think that she's mocking men and how their self-depricating ways can put women off in this song....and the way she does it is so perfect. But I just really like the overall flow of the song. Plus I like how it leads right into one of my favorite songs about my favorite (Lithuanian?) friend, Mario! (LMAO!)

i love "guys like me"... but i have to agree with carly here - i think it's the weakest song on the album. that doesn't make it a bad song, though. not at all. it gets 11 points. out of 10. all the others get 12.
