I don't have the CD, but I have downloaded a few tunes. I'm addicted to 'Intuition'...yeah it's more 'pop' than some of her older songs...but GOOD FOR HER. I don't think she's trying to fit it...I think she's stepped into a new time in her life and is expressing herself a little bit differently...what's so wrong with that? As far as the video...it's OBVIOUSLY poking fun at pop culture! I've actually regained respect for Jewel...I kind of lost interest after 'Spirit'...I might actually have to go buy this new one.

Pat I think it's sad when I see people like you being so quick to judge Jewel. Go read the lyrics to her new song and look closely at the video before you say anything. Jewel is sending a positive message, she is in no way trying to hard. Her song is about people who try too hard and sell their names rather than their music. I think that is where people don't get it. No one takes the time to actually listen to the song. Did you know that the music for the song 'Intuition' is the intro music to the 'Intuition' Razor commercial for women? The song is representing the fact that as a music industry we aim towards selling products more than anything and how it's almost ruining the music industry. I think maybe you should seriously research the music before you aim to judge first Pat. No offense.

WOW! Ok, I saw the video (finally) so I felt like editing my post, in fact i deleted it, this is what I have to say now:
This whole new Jewel is a conceptual one, she's trying to prove that as long as you appear dancing in a video and use a catchy tune, you can sell millions and millions of records, just like she's doing now. I just have one doubt, in the video I downloaded there's a scene where Jewel dances with some black boys and other people just as if it were one of those rap videos by J. Lo or stuff, then appears a comment saying: Jewel music sounds better now that she's dancing. Is that a part of the video or was mtv people who put it?. I think it is a part of the video and i must say if i'm not wrong, that's excellent!. Good for Jewel!, this is the best and most delicate attack for shit like bitchney spears or j.lo who only sell records because of their looks.
One thing i still don't like: the fact that she changed her music from something very melodic to a bubblegum pop thing, but i guess that's in order to complete the concept she's using now.

well, I'm sure knowing jerwel that will be the only song n the album that sounds poppy just because that is the message the song is giving to the people. I mean you havent really heard the rest of the album so you cant say she has totally changed anything. Also the front cover of the album is also sending a message, look closely I mean we know jewel's hair isnt that long, she never cares about showing that much skin and who the hell wears bracelets like that now days? LOL!

Haullie I was talking only about that song, I've not heard any other song from the album, so i wouldn't dare to say she changed her music in all the songs.
BTW I insist, I love the concept of that song (intuition) and its video, it's brilliant!
Do you know something about that thing saying "Jewel music sounds better now that she's dancing"? I want to know if it's a part of the video or if it was put by mtv.

maybe i am taking this the wrong way but the part that looks like a corona comercial with the guy on the bench.. Jewel annoys me when she sings like a baby. I can't STAND that. So I can't even stomach anything she does.

I've never been able to get into her music at all... So even if she had "sold out" (ick, I hate that term) I wouldn't be worried about it.
Haven't heard the song in it's entirety, and have only seen a little bit of the video on some E! news thing - but from Bee's very lengthy description, I have to say good on you Jewel - it sounds very interesting. I love it when an artist or band will take the piss outta the glitzy fake pop industry (even if it's a band/artist I don't like) so I'm gonna keep an eye out for that vid on tv.

everyone is entitled to their opinion, just because I do not like the song doesn't mean you have to flip out over it. but personally I just do not like the song! but as the saying goes opinions are like assholes...........
feel how you want. that is the only thing that people can't take away from you!

Yeah I think her new album deviates a lot from Pieces of you (which is the best IMO) but she's popular and popular artists start to lose their unique sound after awhile.

I was so excited to see this thread!! They play this video on the DVD loop that runs over and over in one of the stores that I work in, and it's been the topic of conversation there many times.
I think it's very well done. My favorite part is definitely the fake MTV part (the JWL video, complete with a very appropriate scrolling comment from a fan).
I think that the whole idea is fantastic. She makes a strong statement of her opinion on pop culture, and the ironic part is that she still gets to cash in on it, lol! Those who are clueless and eat up that pop junk (I'm not saying that all people who listen to pop are clueless, I'm just talking about those who are) will buy her cd and those who have taken the time to understand her message will get it too and appreciate it even more.

When they premiered "Intuition" on TRL, they interviewed Jewel about it and asked her about whether it was a parody or if it was a new way of marketing herself. She didn't really give a concrete answer but said, "I just had fun is the main thing." But I think most Jewel fans know that she is making a statement and not selling out. Like DaturaFae said, she's still making cash off of her statement, which reminds me of what she said on TRL when the video was premiered. She said that her career is a paradox in itself, becuase she has all these views about the world and pop culture - yet she still makes money off of her ideas.

Do you know something about that thing saying "Jewel music sounds better now that she's dancing"? I want to know if it's a part of the video or if it was put by mtv. Lol. That's my favorite part of the video. It's definitely built into the video, not MTV. They played at one of my stores a bunch, and it was just off of a dvd. If you look carefully, it says JWL where the MTV logo usually is.

I love how they say the woman "Screams".

You know this one Budweiser or whatever terrible beer it's advertising commercial? It's making fun of guys who drool at videoclips of girls with big boobs playing pillow fight in their undies. Although that seems to be the goal of the ad it's still just a lame excuse for the company to show SKIMPY CLAD WOMEN WITH FLOPPING BODY PARTS to promote their products. They tried to veil it in irony so people would not think them sexists, but they ended up just doing the same thing they've done for years and years. I have same kind of feelings about this video. At first I thought it was a cool commentary, but then it just seemed way too obvious for me that Jewel was trying to get to the big market and thinking "...but how? Oh I know, I'll show them that the gospel girl too has the body and the face to make it all the way to the top. But how will I do that without seeming that I'm selling myself...". I'm sure Jewel fans will disagree and I'm not an expert on her music so feel free not to believe me . This video nevertheless did not make me like her music or her.

I'm not that big a Jewel fan and haven't seen the video or heard the new album, but I do have a good friend who's been a die hard Jewel fan for years and was pretty much disgusted with the whole album, right down to the use of "u" and "2" in the titles of the songs.
When you've got a steady fan base, it gives you opportunities to experiment a little, instead of doing the same old stuff. I do miss the Jewel that stood on stage with a microphone and a guitar, but I don't think I'm new-Jewel-album-educated enough to decide if this is really selling out for her.
10 years ago it would have been hard to imagine Tori with a different instrument and without a piano, or even with a band... so it's a bit the same, just a change in music style. Granted, Tori never got up and danced quite like that, but then again she never was as mainstream as Jewel.
The song is catchy, but it's just not my thing....
