What do you guys think of Jewel's new song? I think it's HORRIBLE. I really have lost respect for her, she's trying too hard to get on the radio and I think it's sad! What is happening to all of the good artists these days?

I don't think any of her work anymore will amount to pieces of you. I'm sorry but I just think she is trying way to hard.

I haven't liked Jewel's stuff for a while. I loved Pieces of You, but she hasn't been able to capture that again.

anyway... I don't have any of her cd's, but i'd love to buy them... the prob is that they're so expensive here, that i'll have to get a job and work a few months for buy them... but Still standing and Hands are very pretty songs.

Well I think Jewel is very sexy, even in her new pics and videos. But she is just different in a way that is just too poppy and she just wants to be on the radio again. I just can't really respect that.

Excuse me while someone from another part of the world catches up...
Are we talking about the song "Intuition" here? 'Cause I heard it for the first time this morning. More importantly I saw the VIDEO.
I was absolutely transfixed - it's $*@@%^ brilliant! What a fantastic comment on all those popstars who are all style and no substance.
I only half-heard the lyrics of the song, but the bits I heard fitted the mood of the video perfectly. She's not joining in the pop crowd, she's COMMENTING on them. At least that's my take.
Jewel isn't one of my all-time favourites or anything, but I'll definitely be investigating the album after seeing this.

argh i live in a cave and deceied to come out and watch mtv yesterday. OMG what the hell is wrong with her? that is the stupidest poppiest song i have ever heard! and then maybe i am taking this the wrong way but the part that looks like a corona comercial with the guy on the bench.. is it supposed to be a homeless guy? if it is i am pretty sure that someone that openly admitted to living in her car would never ever make fun of or exploit being homeless. oh well anyway. i really liked jewel before in fact i loved pieced of you. oh well i guess some things get better with age and some things worse. im sure she is just trying to make mone and that is what is selling right now..

Yeah, it IS supposed to be a homeless guy, and it IS making fun of something...
...but what makes you thing the homeless guy is the butt of the joke? Isn't it the attempt to make things glamorous and cover up reality that the clip is making fun of?
I'm beginning to think the video is actually too clever for it's own good. Either that or it was designed especially for my personal enjoyment. 'Cause no-one else is getting it!

Well, I've heard the Intuition song 2x on the radio & thought "hhmmm, sounds different for Jewel". My first impression was that it sounded very "Pop-ish" indeed. I remember a few lines from the song sounding a bit satirical (the part about Kate Moss, etc.). Then after reading this thread earlier today, I decided to go to Launch & check out the Intuition video.
I have one word: BRILLIANT!
Don't you guys get it?! LOL
ok, first off, she's placed herself in the city....a normal girl, sitting on the bench with a bunch of normal people on an ordinary day (the opening lines of the song tell us this, too)....she's taking in the street scene, and we (the audience) get to follow her as she looks around & turns everyday, ordinary things into examples of how pop stars (or maybe just celebrities, in general) can SELL OUT! Notice how the 'real life' Jewel is being video taped in the video....you can tell this from the camcorder meter running at the bottom of the screen (03-23-03, 10:23 am, or whatever it was).
BUT THEEEEENNNNN...... she sees things that cause her to jump right out of the 'real life' time frame into the glorified, glamoured and glitzied "SELL-OUT" scenes (where the camcorder meter is non-existent).
We get some foreshadowing that a little dreaming is about to happen in the video when we see that very first sign: "DETOUR AHEAD". Ya, I'll say!....
She spoofs everything from Soda, to Beer, to Athletic shoes....you know, the typical items that so many celebrities "endorse". But what's interesting is the way they all connect. She sees the soda at the hot dog vendor & we go from the grainy camcorder film to the glizty very-colorful dream-like "commercial" of JEWEL SODA....It refreshes! (LOL) Clever! Complete with the "what does a scantily-clad beauty queen have to do with soda?" breast-shot!! Then the real-life Jewel sees the construction sign & we jump with her again into the dream-life as she "sees her name in lights".....HOW PERFECTLY CLICHE!!! I love how she's trying to dance, OMG! LOL Back to the real-life camcorder footage: the white-collar men standing on the sidewalk quickly become "Jewel-Jeans" wearers (think "levi's"); the boys playing b-ball metamorphasize into Nike-like "Jewel"-label shoe-wearers, and the star makes the perfect jumpshot. Jana and others who mentioned the Corona ad: I thought that part was very clever! The homeless "bum" is laying on the bench holding an empty beer bottle about his belly, when the workers walk by with the backrop for a billboard that shows that blank tropical scene on a beach. Immediately real-life Jewel sees this & transforms it to a commercial of "Jewel-Extra" (like Corona-Extra), and even inserts a little crown into the picture, stating "Change your Attitude" (a rip-off of Corona's tag-line: 'Change your latitude') The beer bottle and the bum get perfectly placed to look like a print ad for her new-label beer.....You know, the one everybody is gonna buy and drink because she is a huge star?! LOL
Do you see what she's doing here? Now watch it & listen to the lyrics!
It gets even better.....(all kinds of other clever cliches occur, but fastforward about 30 seconds:) My very favorite part is where she's walking down the street & sees that guy (a street performer?) doing backflips down the sidewalk, and Boom! All of a sudden he's in her 'video' as she does her best Britney imitation flanked by her street-dancin' home-girls and boys! hehe....but wait...it gets better! Look closely and you'll get it....as the camcorder screen changes once again for the dream sequence (notice how bright the colors get?!) you'll be able to see that she is on the "JWL" channel (like MTV, perhaps) and her song is being listed as "#1"....and there is a scrolling comment from a 'fan' who says..(omg, this was so funny that I fell out of my chair, literally!) "'Jewel's music sounds so much better now that she's dancing! I love it!' SSSCCREEEAAMMMS"....the 'fan' was someone in Anchorage, AK. OK, THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! LOL Then really think about it again & LYAO! Bahaha...
Towards the end, she's watching the street scene again & sees the steam coming up from the subway & Bam! that turns into Smoke from the pyro-technic display in her next dance number in the dream-time.....(OH BOY, at this point I was wondering to myself: how is she not laughing during this whole video?!). Okay, where there is fire there are of course FIREMEN!!! As the 'skanky' pop-star Jewel, flanked this time by dancing playboy-bunny wanna-be's, struts her stuff all over the middle of the street we see (in real-time and dream-time, both) a firetruck come roaring up the street. Hold on, boys, Jewel is about to get wet! LOL The firemen (some of them quite scantily-clad, themselves, in the dream time) start 'putting out the fire' and of course give Jewel a good hosing down, providing us with nice wet t-shirt shot. Ok, so what does all this mean? Well, I thought it was pretty clever to use the firemen....a noble, hard-working profession that's all about 'saving' people....and she shows how even THEY get twisted in music videos....becoming sex toys. Haven't we all seen those trashy video's that do that?
At the end, the real-life Jewel is standing there on the street (now in the dark; a whole day has passed as she's dreamed all this stuff) and the real-life firetruck rolls back down the street (we are back in the camcorder footage, now) and as the truck turns the corner [notice the ONE WAY sign!] she smiles & walks off. Her little smile is devilish and perfect for the ending. The message I got from both the images and the lyrics was that "Intuition" sometimes is no different from "Aspiration" these days. Follow your heart, follow your mind....whatever you "follow" you either choose to stay true to who you want to be, or you choose to sell out. At the end, it's clear that Jewel (the real-life one) is NOT choosing to sell out.....she walks away. But for 3 minutes and 57 seconds we get to see what might happen if she did!
BRAVO!! I'm with cookie-Trev....I LOVED IT!!
I got to thinking afterward.....this is a pretty bold and risky move for Jewel to make, precisely for reasons that many of you all were somewhat put off or (dare I say) disgusted with the video. I was thinking that she must have a pretty strong faith in her fans to trust that they will "get" what she was trying to say in the video. Like Trev said, it might just be too clever for its own good. And, another thing....I think it gave her the perfect opportunity to have a little fun & not take herself too seriously. Either way, I really enjoyed it and now the song is actually growing on me.
I still loved Pieces of You best, though. LOL

Here are the lyrics to the song:
Intuition ~ Jewel
I'm just a simple girl In a high tech digital world I really try to understand All the powers that rule this land They say Miss J's big butt is boss Kate Moss can't find a job In a world of post modern fad What was good now is bad
It's not hard to understand Just follow this simple plan
Follow your heart Your intuition It will lead you in the right direction Let go of your mind Your Intuition It's easy to find Just follow your heart baby
You look at me but you're not quite sure Am I it or could you get more? You learn cool from magazines You learn love from Charlie Sheen
If you want me let me know I promise I won't say no
[Chorus Repeat]
You got something that you want me to sell Sell your sin. Just cash in. You got something that you want me to tell You'll love me. Wait and see.
If you want me Don't play games I promise it won't be in vain Uh-uh-uh
[Chorus]
LOL at the Miss J and Charlie Sheen line.....

I haven't seen the video but I heard the song last night when I saw her on Leno. I liked it. I have read the comments on how she is going all "dancey" but I will prolly buy it. I have all her other cd's. But the only one I ever listen to all the way through on occasion is Pieces. That one was even hard for me to get into at first too. But I revisited and have loved it ever since.

Hiya chickens,
I just bought Jewel and Radiohead's newies (strange combination I know, but yay for eclectisism!)
I'm listening to Jewel's album right now. I'm really enjoying it, even though it is quite different from where she began. She has tried to incorporate classic folk melodies and lyrics with some of the dancey tracks.
I thought you might like to read this:
Dear fans, Where do I start? This record may seem different to you. To me, it's closer to what has been in my head for years. I wanted to make a record that was a modern interpretation of big band music. A record that was lyric-driven, like Cole Porter stuff, that also had a lot of swing... (she goes on to thank her producer) I loved making this record, and it's the first record I enjoy listening to. It's fun! I hope you all love it. I hope it makes you feel young and sexy and smart.
-Jewel
'Fun' is definitely the word I've got in my head right now. And sexy! (Leave The Lights On)
Hel xoxo ;D
