Has anyone here ever heard of/listened to the Magnetic Fields? What do you think? I've had them on repeat for some time now...
I only have the album (well, three albums) called '69 Love Songs', which is what it says: it has 69 love songs written from various perspectives, in different styles leaving no stone unturned. I think this idea is just marvellous! Among the traditional "I love you sooo" songs (which this band make sound fresh) there are many many untraditional, including
*a hint towards being a furry - Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits
*one about an ugly guy whom a girl only uses to get rides in a car but he's still happy about the situation - The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side)
*a story of a stubborn man who won't believe the marriage is over and pretends everything is ok. This is one of my favorites, it's really touching! "I haven't seen you in ages/but it's not as bleak as it seems/ We still dance on whirling stages/in my Busby Berkeley dreams" - Busby Berkeley Dreams
*an Irish folk song style tune with a story of a man going to the war and leaving the girl behind. "When I come home -if I come home- you'll be a grown woman" - Abigail, Belle of Kilronan
*feelings of unrequited love. "When you cancel dinner plans/when you cross the street and you won't take my hand/ when you're making impossible demands/I wish I couldn't understand." - You're My Only Home
*a cappella - How Fucking Romantic
*The narrator realizing his lover hasn't gotten over her dead ex - The One You Really Love
*a guitarist telling the guitar to bring the girl back because the playing made her think "maybe I wasn't so dumb" . The guitar would even get its own car. - Acoustic Guitar
*a guy realizing he's a total asshole... "the words you want to hear you will never hear from me/ I'll never say happy anniversary/ never stay to say happy anniversary/ so I think I need a new heart" - I Need a New Heart
That's some examples of the stories. Some humor but also lots of feelings of hurt and love. This is an album you can browse and find a fitting song to every situation! The singer's voice might put some people off though, or so I've heard...
