I just saw the Columbus Howie Day show featuring a band backing him up. It was tremendous! The opening acts were awesome too! I missed Liz Phair Tuesday but this makes up for it. The Newport Music Hall is still one of my favorite venues in Central Ohio to see a show. The best was after the show. Everyone is available for autographs and chatting it is like a mellow version of a Tori Meet and Greet without the fences!
I talked to Howie and had him autograph my poster and Ticket and his bandmates autographed my poster too. I also got the openers autographes on thier respective cds.
Toby Lightman opened the show and I bought her cd sampler. She is like a tiny rock and roll rocket. She must be 5' 3" but she can stroke the strings. She did a great version of a Patti Labell song Real Love.
Then the next guy Matt Nathanson is going to take off big time I am sure of it. He looked a bit like Howie Day but is much more animated with the crowd. He told some hilarious stories about his songs. He had two cds there for sale and was real cool to chat with. He signed both of them for me.
Everybody spent as much time signing and talking till everyone left the venue. It was so nice and close to be able to do that. It is a smallish venue (less than 1200 people and no seats) but $15 and the total access makes you feel like you went to High School with these folks and were in thier garage for a private show.
I recommend you check out Howie Day.com and take the opportunity to see him live especially if you saw him opening for Tori. I was sad he didn't get to play solo with the footpedals but he played keyboard and guitar and his backups were great. I told him I thought he was the most unique artist I've seen in a while when he was solo with Tori. He even corrected me that he used 10 footpedals not five to play all the backgrounds! LOL
I Recommend this a great show overall.
