(Bexface - you better read this seeing as you're the one that wanted me to post a review! )
Ok I suck at reviews, and it's been feeling like a total chore to even make an attempt at one since the show, but I will throw something together. Basically just some of my usual gushy bullshit. (actually, this has just been copied and pasted from my journal! lol)
So, my sister and I flew down to Wellington on Friday morning. Made it there alive (phew! lol) - and spent the rest of our Friday relaxing.. saw Return Of The King in the pretty theatre they held the world premiere at etc.
Saturday arrived and the bad weather that was forecast seemed to be a total joke, as it was a beautiful sunny day (once some early morning rain had cleared away).
But alas - after a day spent wandering around Wellington City, by the time we got home it had started to piss down.
By the time we caught our bus to the stadium it had stopped raining though, so that was good.
As soon as we got off the bus however, the rain started up again!
Not too heavily though, so we made our way to the stadium as quickly as we possibly could.
It was nearly 9pm when we got to our seats. I asked the guy seated next to me if the support act had already played and he said "yep, this is Bowie coming out now!".
Sure enough, right then the music (that we assumed to just be background music) swelled and cartoon versions of Bowie and his band popped up on the big screen onstage.
Then, out they came!
Needless to say, we were all on our feet straight away - and stayed that way for the rest of the show.
This is about when the people from the cheaper seats decided to race forward into the isles... Which I was expecting, but it was still a little annoying once I realised we'd left it too late to run into the isle ourselves - coz they were blocking the end of our row.
But it was all good... coz the weather was still pretty miserable, and it just seemed like the warmer choice to stay where we were, packed amongst everyone else.
Ok for lack of anything decent or fancy to say, here is the set list
1. Rebel Rebel
2. New Killer Star
3. Reality
4. Fame
5. Cactus

Personal highlights of the night:
Without a doubt - "Under Pressure"
He introduced this song saying something along the lines of "this is a song I originally did with Freddie Mercury... but since he can't be here now, Gail sings his part.."
Now, I already admired Gail Ann Dorsey for her backup singing, and bass playing - she just sorta oozes coolness - but when she took the lead on this song, we were fully treated to how awesome her voice truely is. She hit all notes exactly spot on.. I think Freddie would've been proud.
Megan and I both got teary on that one.
And then, the song from my wishlist: "I'm Afraid Of Americans" !!
Maaaan was I stoked to hear this!!! Was sooo awesome! Hehehe.. not much else I can say - it's just always a thrill to hear something you were really hoping they'd play.
Lastly (well not really, but I'm too lazy to go on all night) - "Heroes"
This was also on my wishlist, because I just love this song so much..
So when he said "this next song is dedicated to all of you, because it's what you are tonight" - and they launched into Heroes, it made it even more special.
Oh man was I choking back the tears hearing this one live! It makes me teary just hearing in the radio, so this was just sorta amplified.
Apart from song highlights, there were some cool moments in general that just kicked arse.
Like, it didn't piss down with rain the entire time - mostly it was just sprinklings of rain - but even when the rain did come down a bit harder, he didn't go hide under the dry covered part of the stage. He was out right at the front, getting just as drenched as the rest of us.
A few of the other band members also wandered out into the rain at times too.
Towards the end of the show, David grabbed a towel to try and dry his hair a bit, and then played a bit of "air towel" for us alongside his guitarist... hehehe (he was overall a very chatty, funny guy the entire show.. but most people know he's like that anyway).
So yeah. The show lasted approx 2 hours 5 mins - which was a very good length show (he kept asking us if we were OK, and in response to our cheers would say "ok, if you're happy to stay out here for a long time, so are we!" ) but of course that time just flew by.
Took us a while to get out of the venue afterwards - everyone had a good laugh at the stupid woman who was saying over the loudspeaker "could all patrons please make their way to the exits" ... I mean, what did she THINK we were doing?! Lol it was pretty funny.. and she just kept on saying it, the retard.
I figured since things were going so slow I'd buy another tshirt on the way out - when we'd arrived I bought one of the rather standard shirts - with the pic of Bowie on the front, and the tour dates on the back. But there was this waaaaaaay cool tank top type thing with a reddish and purple face of Ziggy Stardust on the front that I had to have. And seeing as I'd done absolutely NO clothes shopping while we were in Wellington (like I'd planned to) I figured why not.
Anyway, all in all, an amazing night.
I doubt I'll ever get the chance to see David Bowie live again, but now that I have, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and honestly die happy
(Oh, and here is a dorky pic of me wearing the Ziggy Stardust top img20.photobucket.com/albums/v61/aimeebob/ziggytop.jpg )
