It's been 10 years. My heart breaks every year on this day.

I've never been too aware of the exact date of the anniversary of his death so thanks for posting that, Miranda. Anyway, I totally remember where I was when I heard about his suicide. I also remember watching MTV for countless hours that day.

I also remember watching MTV for countless hours that day. I told Sean the other day... all I remember was that it was raining, I was pregnant and we were eating chinese food at home when we got the news... and then, like you, Carly, we watched tons of MTV that day.

i know this may seem callous, but i just can't feel sorry for someone who takes his own life. he knew what he was doing.

That's what River Phoenix's death was like for me. I remember so well sitting on my bed in college and going to the dining hall and stupid boys dissing River, and feeling such a loss. I still do. "He was one of ours".

We're all entitled to our opinions. I feel sorry for him because of the (unknown) circumstances that made him believe he needed to commit suicide. I couldn't agree more on that. Makes me so sad that some people fall victim to such strong feelings that make them take their own lives. I used to feel that those people were simply selfish, but I guess I got more understanding in my old age hehe. I think the impact and shock of the deaths of people like Kurt or River Phoenix (or Layne Staley.. he's been somewhat forgotten this year seeing as Kurt's is such a big anniversary) is sorta like the equivalent of our parent's generation with people like JFK. As in, everyone remembers where they were the day that so-and-so died... With Kurt, I was only 12, and I have to admit I didn't realise who Mum was talking about until she said "the singer from Nirvana" (at which point I was like "OMG!!") - but I'll always remember that day. As with River Phoenix... and Princess Di. Especially so with her - because unlike Kurt and River (we don't have MTV), we got a lot of instant news coverage of that... the tv show we were watching suddenly stopped to bring us the news. Ooh, I feel teary remembering that... what a sap! hehe. Ok enough of this morbid ramblefest.
