Another up-and-coming act that, if you get the chance, you should go out and see. Right now, Toby is opening for Josh Reed so the set won't be too long (a little over 30 minutes?) but still worth the time.
Toby has this awesome smooth soulful voice, along with a steady rhythm guitar and straight-forward personality. What a voice, a black woman's voice in a slender blonde body! She didn't say much, noted that it was a Friday night and we should all be having a good time. She exchanged smiles frequently with her accompanist, Eddie Zack. He did a great job with the Spanish Guitar-sounding intro of the "Devils & Angels" and some other nifty work.
Toby's solo time was for "Front Row" (perhaps shortened from the album version?). She hit the rapid-fire rapping right on, not too fast but not too slow. Having repeated it over and over, it just rolls off her tongue. Amazing!
After the concert, I went up to have my CD cover signed. One thing she does have in common with Tori (including kick-ass looks! : is her size. Seeing either Toby or Tori on stage, you wouldn't feel that way. Both of them are warm people in person so, if you want to, stop by in the back and tell her "HELLO!"
Admittdely, she might fit the syndicated-pop stereotype. It is not hard to imagine the corporate radio powers-that-be pumping her stuff, perhaps the next Mariah Carey? Whether chance gives her that big leap, we will have to find out. I sure hope so! (And then we can have longer sets... since she'll be opening! )
Leave It Inside
Coming Back In
Descending (cover of Black Crowes)
Is This Right?
The River
Devils & Angels
Front Row
Real Love (cover of Mary J. Blige)
Bexface rating: 7.0 out of 10.0
