For me, it's PJ Harvey. She wins this one with absolutely no contest. She's just so f*cking angry, and I love it.
What do you play when you're in a nasty mood?

Depends what kind of bad mood I'm in, but the stuff I turn to most often is Opiate by Tool, Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson and sometimes Rage Against The Machine. Has to be those specfic albums too. (There's something about that "MOTHERFUCKERRR!!!!" part especially that really helps...)

I guess it depends on whether I want to get over my bad mood or if I plan having fun with it

the Dead Kennedys lyrics are awesome when you're angry at the society and its injustices, the music too. Nirvana, Queen Adreena or any angry music does just great. Melancholy and sadness go along really well with Pulp. I'm grateful for this music allowing me to soothe what I have inside, or to live them better. edit: great thread idea, Jay

I'm with the "Depends on the Bad Mood"-gang here!
If I really want to wallow in a state where I think everything is useless and blaaaaah I'll pop in Eels's Electro-Shock Blues. It's one of my favorite albums ever, but unfortunately no soul should ever listen to it if they are in a cheerful mood, because that album will bring you down faster than a lead zeppelin...
If I want to blow off steam, I need some music to which I can jump around or at least mentally headbang to. As I don't have much of that kind of a material, I go for some rough guitar songs from The Smashing Pumpkins.
I guess I most often, when in a bad mood, put on an album that will actually take me away from the mood. I like to dance--that seems to help to make me feel better, kind of like doing aerobics! The best dance music for me is Kate Bush (with the appropriate choreographies), again some Smashing Pumpkins, and that one song on the compilation CD Aimee made for me... I can't now remember the band's name, but it was girls singing and the song was called "Blind" (too lazy to google, sorry!). I love that song!

Ok since people are adding their melancholy music, I'll throw in my favourite wallowing music too..
Alice In Chains and Nine Inch Nails. Both excellent for my depressed moods when I know I just needa wallow in misery. AIC is good more for the wallowing side of things, and NIN more for feeling like someone understands.
lol how gloomy

Michael Franti and Spearhead never fail to help me find my way back to positivity. The gear has sweet soul and will grab you and pick you up (just like a dear friend) no matter what phase of anger you're in.
But when I want to wallow for a wee bit it's Bright Eyes all the way, mostly I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, or Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. Kills me.

I'm a bit partial to Imogen Heap when I'm in a bad mood and want to wallow in it for a bit. I recommend: Loose Ends Oh Me, Oh My Getting Scared (especially if you've been the victim of mean-ness during the day!) Close Up (Frou Frou) get back and away from this - it's all wrong. Keep calm for a moment, look in my eye! get back and away, this could get ugly...It's always quite the carthartic experience to sing Modest Mouse's The World At Large from the top of my lungs The Pay Per View version of Tori's Blood Roses from '99 is a definite MUST. When I'm coming down, I like to thow on The Panics, Wilco and Supercar (Japanese band). There are lots though. I am constantly updating my 'Nightcholia' iPod playlist for bed. I

often when I'm in a bad mood I don't wanna listen to music... it's just not as enjoyable... I agree to an extent, just when I'm in a bad mood I dont want to listen to music with lyrics, instrumental music wont tell me how to feel though, which distracts me from my bad mood but wont make it worse.
