O.K, I am going to attempt to write about my Patty experience now, while it is all fairly fresh in my mind. It's a strange thing to say, but thinking about the concerts after the fact is almost better than when they were actually happening. Maybe because it all seemed surreal to me and I was so busy trying to absorb everything at the time. Now I'm just beside myself with the afterglow of it all, and absolutely estactic for the new album to come out. (More about that later.)
First of all, I have to say that I'm a lucky girl. Not sure if I believe that everything happens for a reason, but it sure felt that way to me in this instance. I hadn't even heard a single Patty song until January, when I received the mix of songs from Carly and Mary. A month or so after that, when the obsession was deeply rooted , I found out that Patty was coming to Ellsworth, the town I live in. I was amazed and thrilled. The Grand theatre where she was to perform is a very old and TINY theatre. I knew that any seat would be a great seat. Later I learned that Patty is from Maine and would be doing not one, but two shows!
Anyway, the first show was Tuesday night and I had huge butterflies in my stomach as I drove to the theatre. I found my seat easily enough and waited for the opening act, Michael Fracasso, to come out. The saddest thing happened when he did. He was getting himself situated, when he picked up his guitar and dropped it! There was a horrible gasp in the audience. I guess it broke because he couldn't use it. You could tell he was mortified as he whispered: "That was my baby!" I felt so bad for him. He then had to use one of Patty's guitars, and he warned the audience that everything would be completely different now. He recovered well, though, and did great. I liked his voice and his style, but wasn't so keen on some of his lyrics. He did a couple of songs on the piano, and one of them I really liked, but I don't know the name of it.
Now on to Patty! She came out dressed in the cutest outfit. Jeans and a long green tunic with a little jacket over it. She also had on black wedge shoes with red socks or tights underneath. Her hair was tied back, and she looked just adorable. She had a really great energy about her, and was almost child-like at times. She mentioned that her parents were in the audience, and I think that had a lot to do with her mood. She seemed really excited, and mentioned several times how happy she was to be home. She was upbeat the second night too, just not quite so much as the first night. She mentioned the second night that she had a bit of a sore throat, so that may have been the reason she was more subdued.
I'm going to try my best to recount as many of the songs as I can, but many of the songs were new, unreleased material, and no set lists have been posted that I can find as of yet. I had already read that Patty had been singing a lot of new songs she had written that would hopefully be recorded for her new album this summer. Some fans have gone to the concerts unaware of this, and have been disappointed. I was really glad to know this before I went because I went excited to hear the new stuff with no real expectations for released songs. (except Florida, of course...to no avail, I'm afraid.) But I certainly got a lot of great released songs, so like I said before: I'm a lucky girl.
She started the show with a song called Moon River, which is on the Elizabethtown soundtrack. (Great movie, by the way, and Patty makes a cameo appearance.) It's a beautiful, powerful song and Patty really belted it out. She sounds fantastic live. Her voice is so powerful and flawless. She then went on to greet the audience and explain that she and her partner, Doug, (who plays back-up guitar and does a bit of vocals now and then) were crash test dummies and really appreciated that the fans were allowing her to test out all this new material. I've read that she has requested on forums that people not record the songs and leak them out on the Internet, and for good reason. It's a pretty risky thing to sing unrecorded material, and it says a lot about Patty, I think, that she's so willing to share it with us. But, I must say, it's pretty painful at this point, now that I have heard the new songs, to think how LONG I have to wait for the new album to come out. If she's recording it this summer, does anyone know when it might likely be released? It's driving me nuts!
Here are the names of some of the new songs that I remember. Keep in mind that these are unofficial titles that I found reading other concert set lists. The titles will likely change.
I Said To The Sky*
No Bad News*
Up or Down (on piano)
Stay On The Ride
Moon Song*
Burgundy Shoes (on piano)
Trapeze
Peaceful Valley
*Loved, loved, loved these. The former two were so funky and the beat on I Said to The Sky was addictive and it's still in my head. She really went to work on her guitar in No Bad News. There was a point when she and Doug just played their hearts out and her whole body seemed connected to the guitar. I'm sure my mouth fell open at certain points because it was just amazing. A few lyrics from Moon Song are in my sig and avatar. It was so lovely and haunting.
Some released songs she sang:
Kite Song (on piano- gorgeous)
Useless Desires (yay!)
Love Throws a Line
When it Don't Come Easy
Long Ride Home-This was during the encore, but to my dismay, she ended up stopping without finishing because the plug to her guitar kept popping out and they couldn't keep it in. She finally gave up after several tries saying, "I just want to do something that sounds pretty!" and sang
Icicles instead. A good trade, beautifully done, and luckily, I got Long Ride Home the next night.
Patty had about four guitars and apparently only a certain one will do for a song. She traded guitars frequently.
A wonderful show. There are some songs that I left out because I don't know their names. I loved every minute.
The next night I was supposed to attend the show with Alex, but he ended up having to work late where he was training for his new job, and wouldn't have been able to make it home in time for the concert. I was really disappointed, but I called my cousin, Nicole, and invited her to come. I was glad she agreed because I would have hated to have the ticket go to waste, and I desperately wanted to share the experience of seeing Patty live. It killed me to think that I had this extra ticket on poor Carly's birthday and she was too far away to invite!
Nicole couldn't meet me until 8:00, so we missed the opening act. I felt a little guilty, and was hoping that Michael Fracasso worked out his guitar issue. Anyway, Nicole made it and we found our seats during the intermission, which were two rows closer than my seat the previous night.
Patty wore a pink tank top and black sparkly skirt with funky black knee high tights and black shoes. Her hair was down and very red and she looked beautiful.
This concert was very similar except she sang a few different released songs. These were
Making Pies
Long Ride Home
Let Him Fly
The latter was a big surprise, as it was the very last song performed, and the crowd went nuts. This crowd was slightly ruder than the crowd the night before, and kept shouting out songs they wanted all night. At one point, I could smell that someone had lit a cigarette which was very annoying and distracting. There was also a baby crying now and then. But Let Him Fly was so amazing to hear live, and I guess fairly rare to hear, as of late, anyway.
Apparently, Patty thought the crowd was very polite because she mentioned it a couple of times. Once she said: "You're such polite Maine people. Does anyone remember The Bounty? (The Bounty is an old nightclub in Bangor.) Those were NOT polite Maine people."
The previous night she had also remarked on the crowds politeness and how last time people were dancing around and taking their clothes off. "You can do that this time, too, if you want." she said. "Um....but maybe not during this next song."
She's really cute and funny. Anyway, I'm leaving a link to a thread at a forum where you can read a few more tidbits about this concert. I just figured, since someone else wrote it, and I've already written this much, I'd just post the link for you to read, rather than typing it out myself. What can I say? I'm lazy! www.pattygriffin.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1138812653 It's just a bit more about things Patty said, etc. There's a little more commentary on the songs, also. I wish I could have posted real set lists, but I did my best.
Nicole really enjoyed the show Wednesday night and I got her to pick up Impossible Dream on our way out. My work has been done!
Anyway, I guess that's it. Hope the other members of the Patty Trio enjoy reading about my experience. I never would have been at these shows if not for you two. Thanks, my dears!
