Ok, so you all seem to like finding out what my obsessions are then checking them out for yourselves. So I had this idea that I'm going to start sharing here about some of the artists/bands that I've been stumbling into and lovin' up. I'll try to post about one or 2 of them each week. Many of them I'm finding via last.fm. I'm telling you, that place is the coolest for a music geek - a few of you here already have fun there with me and know what I'm talking about. But what's great is that you can find artists you might never otherwise be introduced to, and chances are you're going to really like their music because everything is 'similar' to what you listen to (or possibly what you don't and want to check out anyway). Point is, I'm grateful to have found some really great new stuff there.
Here now is one of my latest musical obsessions, with a quick overview of their who/what/where info and plenty of links for checking them out:
About: Trudgernaut is an East Texas collaborative
Influenced by: A ton of great artists - including Hank Williams, Neil Young, The Beatles, Will Oldham, Songs: Ohia, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Will Johnson, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, R.E.M., Pink Floyd, Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon, and on and on...
Sounds Like/Similar to: Well, I could start by saying many of the artists listed above - but you gotta hear to determine for yourself. I will say that they have that certain rootsy-singer/songwriter-acousticy sound I'm just loving right now. So all of you who are into Patty and Cat Power and Neko and Ryan Adams and Martha with me right now (and remember my great Damien obsession of '03/'04?!) should check out their sound. They've been tagged as alt-country, indie, lo-fi, and slow-coustic, just to name a few.
Go listen to their songs at:
Trudgernaut's myspace page
They occasionally change the songs on their player there, but this week they have up 4 songs that I got to pick -- it's the 'Mayr special', So LISTEN!
All 4 songs are downloadable, too. Download them. Listen to them. Listen again. Maybe they will speak to you like they've been speaking to me. I fell into a hard-core obsession with So Little Time a couple weeks ago and I still love it. It's not your typical songy-song - it's different, in a way I can't even explain except to say that it's a song that takes its sweet 5 minutes worth of time to build and grow and be something that really wows me, musically. Two Day Turnaround is one of the newer tunes up and it's still listed as a 'demo' - but I love the raw sound of it and the poetry in the song.
Ocean Drive Recordings
This is their official site at their record label. There are more downloads at the bottom of that page, see?
At the very least give a good listen to 'Brash and Eloquence' and '16 Million Ways' - both tunes I really like a lot. These 2 particularly have a catchyness about them for you listeners who appreciate the 'catchy' of a song. Arkansas is another good one.
Trudgernaut's Last.fm page
If you're a user/subscriber at last.fm you can listen to a few full length songs on their page, too.
Trudgernaut featured on My Morning Jacket's tribute album
Track #7. This is a FANTASTIC cover of My Morning Jacket's 'By My Car'. It's one of the best things they've recorded, in my opinion. If you're not familiar with MMJ, it don't matter. Just listen to Trudgernaut's version and enjoy.
I recently obtained their 'All Things Everywhere' album (which is now out of print) and I'm lovin' it.
They have a new EP coming out which I'm very excited about.
And if you look back in their catalog on their site you can also get an idea of what they do with electronica.
What Mary Says about the music, in general:
It's inspired, it's emotional, it's out-of-the-box, smart, raw, stripped, deep, complex, and beautiful. All at once, sometimes. A coupla guys gettin' together on their 'hobby time' to create some interesting and quite pleasing down-home-style music that offer ideas on love, loss, longing, growth, etc - oh, you know, all those 'real' topics I love to hear in a song. This ain't bubblegum, folks. The vocals have that 'something interesting' about them - that certain combination of confidence and sweet vulnerability that I'm a big fan of in other artists like Jeff Tweedy, Jason Molina, Neil Young, Damien Rice and Mark Kozelek. Overall, it's the kind of music I find perfect for listening to on quiet rainy days while I write, or on sunny weekend afternoons when I'm lounging around doing nothing, or on long dark dusty drives through the desert at night. Lately, many of these songs have indeed become part of the soundtrack to my days. I hope you'll go over and give them a listen and that you'll like them, too. If you like what you hear, feel free to drop 'em a line -- and say Mayr sent you.
