(#28) I could tell from the first minute that Tori was ON! There was definite charge in each and every song. Maria had found out from Tori that the theme of tonight’s concert would be the Prince of Darkness, concerning the devils in all of us. That, plus the people who heard the soundcheck in Durham, made us whisper that “Father Lucifer” was coming our way, for the first time on the tour. (We weren’t disappointed.) “Crucify” continues to evolve, although missing the bass stutter-step from Syracuse. She re-iterated the house band theme and commented on the musicians strike. The broadway shows were planning on using canned music to replace them and she had a thought: How about a canned president? All of a sudden, the café was on. The show was speeding right by like a flash! We had found out that Tash had a cold again at the M&G. She did a great improv touching on Tash’s plight. Hotel was not home, mommy. Will you take me to see Princess Bell? I was floored by “Abraham, Martin, and John” near the end of the Café. (Had voted for this with Oxygen concert but heard “Desperado” was chosen instead. Well, I would rather have heard it myself!) With my binocs, it was obvious she was crying or close to doing so. “Concertina” had its own great vibe. “Take to the Sky,” seeming to be stronger than the night before. “Father Lucifer” and its Steve McQueen variation (which, I still do not understand) I thought was absolutely marvelous. What a great version! “God” was the perfect follow to that. The religious themes continued with “Past the Mission” in the encore. “Hey Jupiter” was the best I had seen of that as well, far outdoing Auburn Hills. Like I said before, the concert just flew by. A show to put up amongst the best this year.
