(#29) I had been predicting that “Gold Dust” would come out. But would it? Not since San Fran and that unfortunate incident has “Gold Dust” been played. Would this be the night? Seth from the M&G sat right next to me so energy levels were high in the pit. Everything had a groove, Tori was just as ON tonight as the night before. “Precious Things” and “Sugar” had great drum beats that pulsed through me. I spent a lot of time looking at Matt throughout. “Spark” kept up the twang from two nights before. (BTW: It is only during “Spark” and “Iieee” that she uses the small keyboard just above the ivories on the Bosey.) Again, the show was speeding by. The Café was on, which had its own theme. Started with “Cooling” and on into “Cool on Your Island.” She interrupted the start of this to acknowledge it was a sucky album (YKTR) but why couldn’t we just get over it and get on with life? Great commentary! “Silent All These Years” completed the Secret Time. “Horses” was a bit more subdued than I was used to and that was perfect for that night. “God” and “Father Lucifer” returned as well. “Take to the Sky” (for a third night in a row!) in what must’ve been her best rendition of it so far. The Carole King bit was great and she definitely felt like continuing the choruses over and over beyond the normal limit at the end. Then I shuddered. Here came “ICSNY,” the show was wrapping up, again going at lightspeed. “Talula” in the first encore with such an awesome bass-and-drum buildup by Matt and Jon; they have really rehearsed some excellent stuff. Elbows at the edge of the stage at the start of the second encore, praying for “Gold Dust.” She walks on stage without Matt and Jon. Was it going to happen? What happened next completely blew me away. At Vegas, I had requested “Over the Rainbow” only to miss it by a few shows. My friend and I had last heard it back in Wilkes-Barre in ’96. It had been played only three times this tour. After telling us quietly she would really miss us, she went on to play it. The expression of my face was of total shock as she looked my way a few times. I came close to crying, maybe I did. Can't remember well enough even though it was just last night. I couldn’t even clap when it was over. Finally, I got over it to start dancing for “Taxi Ride,” the final closer.
Matt got the set list and was phoning it in to Mikewhy. I went over to read it. It showed “Gold Dust” as the third song into the Café, whereas instead she had played “TIYH.” “Taxi Ride” and “Amber Waves” were listed as the last two for second encore so she had opted out of “Gold Dust” in the Café but replaced it with “Rainbow” in the second encore. I was absolutely floored. I had gotten what I wanted, in some strange way. Disappointed in not hearing “Gold Dust” but absolutely ecstatic that “Rainbow” came out. Also interesting was to look over the lyric sheet for the Steve McQueen bridge in “Father Lucifer.” I spent a while absorbing it all and catching up with the other EWFs, reveling in the goodness. What a fantastic show!
Bexface rating: 9.75 out of 10 (my best rating so far!)
