Just before the show, I went up to say “hi” to Mikewhy and his girlfriend, Amanda. I thought they were engaged so I said “fiancée” but he corrected me. (DOH!!) Anyway, it gave me the opportunity to ask him what I always wanted to ask him about his comment on hand clapping during “Take to the Sky.” Did he write that since he thought Tori did not like the hand clapping or was it one of those purist Toriphile things (hear the music unadulterated with hoots and hollers, etc…)? He admitted it was more of the latter although he thought he had been doing it as a joke. He also thinks Tori likes the clapping and that the piano thumping is just the accompaniment that she has always done, not meant to encourage the clapping. I thanked him very much for the great work he does for all of us.
(#32) It was strange to be in an audience that stood the entire time. No attempt was made by security or the ushers to keep us down. Fine by me since I like to dance. For a while, I stood out in the aisle since dancing in those setup seats was a tight affair. Eventually, Patrick came by to ask us to get back into our seats. By that time, Tori had passed “A Sorta Fairytale” and was into “God.” I liked the setlist a lot. We got to hear the Steve McQueen bridge version of “Father Lucifer” again. “Rattlesnakes” is such a beautiful tune and “Voodoo” has a great reggae beat to it, two of my favorites from this tour. (Those seats were quite restraining for a ballistic guy like myself.) For the first time, I noticed in “Bliss” how Jon affected the sliding bass sounds. He was constantly tuning the strings up and down to make the drifting bass sounds. Must be hell to tune on the fly!
The Café was next, started with an improv about the beautiful day it had turned out to be. She also intimated that she had “not blown us off,” very likely a reaction to Megan’s comment at the M&G. “Leather” seems to be played in a lot of Cafes so nothing unusual there. Then she said she had a “treat” for Pittsburgh. It was Madonna’s ballad, one of the only Madonna songs I have on CD, “Live To Tell.” Absolutely marvelous and another first for us all. “Baker Baker” brought out a few more chills before the band returned. “Mary” with the band was another great surprise. (Have to admit the breast-hugging freaked me out, unexpected!) The setlist did have a few twists and turns in it, enough to keep us involved.
The encores were great as usual. I think Jon and Matt must rehearse different bass-and-drum intros for her walk back onto the stage for each show. They are great to dance to! The driving eighth-note bass line for “Taxi Ride” was there in part by Jon but toned down some from its intro at Grand Rapids. He would play a few of them then hold the tone. But it still echoed in my head when he went back to the standard while Tori was playing. Right after, Tori wanted to start but she looked towards Matt and asked, “Is it happening?” Evidently not, so she turned around and said, “F*ck it. We’ll do this instead.” Her first verse required only piano (for “Putting the Damage On”) while Matt scrambled around with the stage hand to replace his bass with the string bass. He got it plugged in just in time!
After the show, said my goodbye to Patrick who was taking Steve’s place while he was away. He did a great job with the Meet & Greets. Found someone with the setlist to confirm the ending events. The plan had been to play “Hey Jupiter” instead of “Damage.” Still, it was about as good a setlist as you could hope for. A good show to end this personal swing on. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
