We arrived in Kansas City around 3:00pm and after we located our hotel, we decided to go ahead and find the Midland Theatre. Once we did, we saw a group of Toriphiles gathered for the meet & greet. The barricades were already up, but Tori's buses were not, so we decided to find a place to park and join the crowd. I started getting really hyper about possibly seeing Tori and I was hoping to get some photos.
By the time we parked and walked 3 blocks back to the theatre, Tori's buses had arrived. I spotted Amanda (MikeWhy's girlfriend) and asked her if Tori was already up there. She said that Tori had gone inside the theatre and that everyone was waiting for her to come out. There were a lot of people there...and I couldn't see anything from where I was. Krista was able to see more than I could, because she is much taller than I am and so I gave her my camera. After about a half hour, Tori came out. Krista only got one photo of her, b/c everyone in front of us held their cameras up too and pretty much blocked the view. I was really tired and wanted to get back to the hotel and clean up, so we only stayed for about 10 minutes and then went to the Fairfield and checked in.
It was a really nice hotel just a couple of miles away and on the same street as the Midland Theatre in downtown Kansas City. We got ready for the concert and ordered a pizza to be delivered for our dinner, then we headed down to the theatre again. We had a little trouble finding a place to park, but we did and it was only $2. I was totally expecting to pay about $10. Anyhow the inside of the Midland Theatre was magnificent! I can not put into words how beautiful this place was. I felt like we were in an opera house from the early 1900's. I was just in total awe of the decor and the little cherub statues in the pillars and the detailed painting on the walls and ceiling...I could go on and on and never do it justice. I really want to go back there again some day. Even the lobby and the rest room waiting areas were gorgeous. Oh, and there was a crystal chandelier in the middle of the ceiling in the actual theatre. I felt so lucky to be seeing Tori in such an inspiring place.
Our seats were in the very middle of the orchestra section, and I was on the aisle of the T ori side of the stage. Directly across from me on the other side of the aisle were Mikewhy and Amanda. I didn't talk to them (cuz I'm so shy), but I thought it was kind of cool. WE were in the 7th row, which was actually 10 rows back from the stage, because there was a 3-row pit section in front of the orchestra section. They were really good seats, definitely the best I've ever had at a Tori show.
Rhett Miller came out and played several songs. Damn is he sexy! Krista and I both were ready to run up the aisle and devour him. His music is a lot better live than the stuff I downloaded. He is a really good performer. Maybe not as good as Howie (I don't know, cuz I haven't seen him live), but I was impressed. There were three songs in particular that I liked a lot, but I'm not sure of the names. The most entertaining part of watching him was the way he moved when he played. He is hot....woo baby!
Anyhow, after he played, Tori came out about a half hour later. She was wearing one of those flowy robe type dress things, which was several shades of green, with jeans on that cut off below the knee. I couldn't see her feet all that well, because of the speakers in front of her pianos, but from what I could tell, she was wearing some pointy white high heeled shoes, nothign fancy. She had a large brooch type green necklace on as well, and her hair was curled with nothing in it. She looked amazing! She was very smiley for us and seemed to be in a really good mood through out the whole show.
Set list:
- Wampum Prayer
- A Sorta Fairytale (the best I've heard it with the band...brought tears to my eyes)
- Sweet Sangria (yay! one of my faves from SW...so happy to hear it)
Tori told a little story about Tash riding a go cart for the first time in Kansas City and that she was upset because Tori couldn't find Dorothy or Toto from the Wizard of Oz! She also mentioned something about the road crew volunteering to dress up as Dorothy. She said that Tash said "Mummy you lied!" (about Dorothy & Toto being in Kansas) and that Tori had to explain they were in Kansas City, MISSOURI...not Kansas. heheh...it was so cute.
- Caught A Lite Sneeze (woo! what more can I say?)
- Your Cloud (amazing live! it was a very passionate performance)
- God (the crowd seemed really happy to hear this...it was great)
- Father Lucifer ( awesome! another fave of mine - totally unexpected. She did an alternate ending that I didn't recognize, but it was great)
- Wednesday (so cute! Tori crosses her arms over her chest at the end when she sings 'America')
ROADSIDE CAFE
Tori started out with a little improv...it was really touching. Brought tears to my eyes. It went something like this:
"I sing some songs that come along.... some go back a few years... Those songs, they're still close to my heart. The names they change... but these girls, they're never far." There was more to it...but anyhow...
- Baker Baker ( this song has actually always been one of my least favourite songs from UTP, but seeing her perform it live brought me a new appreciation. Tori added a line about someone in the audience whose cell phone rang, something about "who is on the line, tell them I said hi. I have to get back to the second verse of my song now..." and then she whispered "I love this line", just before she sang He says that behind my eyes I'm hiding. It was great...I just really saw a lot of Tori's personality come out during that song...so now I'm liking it a whole lot more than I ever did.
- Daniel ( I knew what this was as soon as she started playing the notes on the piano. It was simply beautiful...defintely one of the best covers I've ever heard her do. It made me cry.)
- China (supposedly this was supposed to be Gold Dust, but Tori changed her mind. I was not disappointed, because this one brought me to tears. I love this song.)
MATT & JON COME BACK
- Doughnut Song (oh my god!! fucking amazing with the guys...very passionate...more tears)
- Amber Waves ( hearing this live gave me a much greater appreciation for this song. It is my least fave from SW, but seeing Tori play it live really got to me...especially where she sings You said he's got a healing machine.... I'm not sure why...but it really changed the song for me.)
- Cornflake Girl (very good...especially the piano solos. Tori was right on...and really into it)
- Mary (I was soooo excited to hear this!! This has always been an emotional song for me. Tori did a weird little boob grab during the acid rain line. It was weird...but cool. heheh)
- Precious Things (I can never get sick of hearing this live. It is one of my all time fave Tori songs...and I just love it more everytime I hear it. She was really into it...so that made it even better.)
- I Can't See New York (brought tears to my eyes...I love this song, but it just makes me sad. It was especially touching to hear it live.)
- iieee (finally, a choirgirl tune! Tori rocked it! )
Encore #1
- Taxi Ride (was expecting this - still a fave...beautiful live)
- Glory of the 80s (HOLY SHIT!! This totally kicked ass, everybody was dancing around, Tori was all smiley and happy...it was so cool!)
Encore #2
- Spring Haze (yay!!! I love this song! So happy she included it...sooo pretty)
- 1,000 Oceans (I felt like I was listening to the end of Venus...nice way to end the show. Very powerful, meaningful performance)
After we left the show, all I could think was 'wow'! This was probably the best Tori concert that I had ever attended. Tori was in the best mood and smiling and just being adorable, the acoustics and lights were amazing...everything just sounded awesome. Our view of Tori and the stage was super too! I have nooo complaints. Thank you, Tori!
