Duluth, MN: 3/30/03) Ok, in order to give an account of the Tori concert, I have to discuss what all happened leading up to the show because, well, it’s important to me.
There is a group here in Minneapolis (Twin Cities Toriphiles) and that is who I contacted a while ago because I was looking for a ride to Duluth. This girl, Amy, e-mailed me so I had the whole ride thing figured out! I was also excited to meet a fellow EWF. I met a lot of great people the day of the concert, which is what I was hoping for.
We (me, Amy, Jeff, and Amy II - hey, I have to keep the two Amy straight for ya) headed to Duluth at about 9:00 in the morning in order to get to the Meet and Greet. I think we arrived at about 11:30 and there were only five other people there already. We stood around for about an hour until Joel finally came and told us that it was too cold, so the M and G was cancelled. To be honest, it wasn’t all that cold. We had been standing outside for an hour at that point and were perfectly fine, but oh well - what Joel says, goes. Anyway, I consciously tried to not get my hopes up in case such a thing happened, but I was heart-broken when he told us the M and G was cancelled. It took a couple minutes for it to sink in, then I shed a few tears and everyone was really sweet - they knew that it was my first Meet and Greet, and they all had met Tori numerous times so they knew how much I had been anticipating it. I gave Joel my letter to give to Tori, so that was really nice. I really didn’t think the M and G would be cancelled, or else I would have written my request in the letter - Cloud On My Tongue.
After we were all done grumbling about how it really wasn’t that cold outside, we went out to eat at this really cool restaurant - Tori would have loved it because it had a ton of what I assume to be authentic Native American artifacts for decoration. By the time we got to the restaurant I was really not feeling well at all. I got my period that morning, and that is never a minor issue. I always get cramps that are so bad that I spend much of the day throwing up. It was a pretty gradual process, but I finally had to go in the bathroom just to get away from everyone because I couldn’t even concentrate on what they were saying, and I was literally feeling the color drain from my face. So, I sat on the counter for a few minutes praying (and I never pray) that this would all blow over because it would suck to be so sick at the Tori concert. I threw up a couple times, and about ten minutes later, I was laying on the bathroom floor (gross, now that I think about it) and I couldn’t move because I was in so much pain. I was really really hot but I couldn’t stop shivering, so that kind of freaked me out because that usually doesn’t happen. Amy kept checking on me and I told her to not worry too much because my cramps are always horrible. Finally, I admitted that something was different this time. I was really really scared. A woman walked into the restroom and asked me if she could call someone so I could go to the hospital and I said yes. The ambulance showed up in about two minutes and I had to be carried out of the restaurant on a stretcher because I couldn’t walk - I was really embarrassed because I was bawling and everyone was staring at me as I was being carried out. So, I took my first ride in an Ambulance. It was interesting. When I got to the hospital I was really cranky because I HATE hospitals due to numerous horrible experiences which have basically traumatized me. Anyway, I was in the hospital for about ten minutes and started to feel a lot better. I probably felt 90% better, actually, so that was good. I had to get tests done because they were worried it was something other than menstrual cramps, even though I got my period that morning. Duh! Seriously though, I’m glad they did them because it really did feel like something else was going on - I had never felt like that before. Anyway, I had to stick around for the test results which sucked because I was feeling better at that point and just wanted to go eavesdrop on Tori’s sound-check with Amy, Jeff, and Amy II. My doctor gave me some pain medication which made me nauseous, so right before I was going to leave, I felt like crap again. Then a nurse gave me Maalox to make my tummy better. So, we left the hospital and the second I stepped outside I threw up several times. That’s basically the point when I started feeling a lot better. I was just really drained, so I ended up taking a nap in Amy’s backseat while they perused Duluth and then tried to eavesdrop on the sound-check.
After my lovely nap, I went into the auditorium and Jeff and Amy II were all excited and told me that I came one minute too late, because Matt Chamberlain’s wife (Ali, I think her name is) took pics of them and then she asked them what’s been going on in Duluth and they told her the whole thing about how I had to go to the hospital but would be at the concert. I guess after they told her that, she immediately went into the auditorium - Tori was still doing sound-check so I have no idea if Ali told her what happened or what. We were all sitting at a table and could vaguely hear the sound-check. The only song we could make out was Bells For Her so we were thrilled!
