*continued from "fearscape's Torigasm climax (part 1)
It was such a long day - we all commented that it felt like we were in Duluth for at least two days at that point, but the concert was going to start soon! Amy had a seat in the 2nd row in the pit. Jeff and Amy II had seats in the 6th row on the main floor, and there I was in the 33rd row (only one row closer than I was at the Minneapolis show, which was my first Tori show ever). To be honest, I was kind of bummed out about my seating because there were a ton of speakers one row behind me so I was expecting to be blown away by bass throughout the show. Anyway, about 10 minutes before the show starts, Amy walks up and motions for me to come to talk to her. Shannon, another girl I met that day (she’s the creator of Welcome to Barbados - go visit!) and Shannon asked me, “Do you want to sit in the 4th row?” It seriously took me less than a second to start crying. I said, “Of course I do.” She told me she had an extra ticket (I’m not sure why, exactly) and handed it to me and we gave each other a huge hug. Amy told me that Shannon was sitting by her and was asking people who could use the ticket and Amy told her she knew exactly who to give it to, since I had such a nightmarish day and also had a not-so-stellar seat. I was so incredibly happy, I can’t even describe it to you. I felt so blessed.
Rhett Miller took the stage. I had to check him out looks-wise, since Mandy raved about him on her thread. He is rather cute! I thought he was good. I loved Howie Day, so Rhett had a hard act to follow, in my opinion. Anyway, he’s a very talented guitarist. I will remember his charm more than anything - he was so funny! His mannerisms distracted me from his music, though. He’s such a spaz! He is constantly head-banging and wiggling around. I enjoyed him, though. I would like to check out his studio stuff because I think he would sound a lot more polished with the band. During Intermission I had to help Amy get all situated since she was recording the show. (shhhh...) We were so excited we could barely function or talk!
The lights dimmed and once I heard “In our hand...” I realized how thankful I was to be there. Here is the set-list along with my commentary on each of the songs:
Wampum Prayer **Absolutely haunting, as usual. I love this song as an opener. Her voice was perfect.**
A Sorta Fairytale **This is one of my favorite songs from SW. I don’t think I breathed once during my favorite verse: “And I rode along side till my honey spread itself so thin for me to break your bread for me to take your word I had to steal it.”**
Crucify **At my first show, I was a bit dismayed at how much she changed the song, but now that I knew what to expect I think I appreciated it a lot more. It was simply amazing. She put so much emotion into it. When she sang, “Got a bowling ball in my stomach” she clutched her stomach and turned to stare at us - I will never forget that.**
Bliss **Yay! I really wanted to hear this live ever since Mary told me how great it was. It surpassed my expectations.**
Cornflake Girl **What can I say about Cornflake Girl? The whole crowd was into it, and so was Tori. I don’t think I could ever tire of hearing the purr she does near the end.**
Liquid Diamonds **I’m pretty sure my mouth dropped open the second I realized what she was playing. It’s one of my faves from Choirgirl and it was BEAUTIFUL live! It was definitely a pleasant surprise.**
Tear In Your Hand *I was surprised at the placement of TIYH, since it’s usually near the end of the show, if not at the very end. This is my favorite song from Little Earthquakes and I cried like a baby.**
Sweet Sangria **I love this song and was so glad she played it! Tori sounded so cute when she sang, “Senorita shyly turning away.” There was so much emotion in this song, it was unbelievable.**
Wednesday **To be honest, this isn’t one of my faves, but I agree with orfeo - her voice is particularly amazing during this song.**
Roadside Cafe:
(solo)
DVD improv **The improv was about Tash waking Tori up at 5:30 in the morning because she wanted to watch a DVD. Tori told her they both needed more sleep and Tash responded, “What do you have to do other than hang out with me?” It ended with Tash saying she wanted to watch a DVD - she didn’t want to watch TV because there were men with scary guns. The improv started out really ligh-hearted and cute, but the ending made me feel like someone punched me in the stomach.**
Carbon **Holy shit. I honestly don’t even know how to describe Carbon - I had heard an mp3 of it as a solo, but I was still overwhelmed with the beauty of it. Tori’s passion and energy seemed almost tangible. I started crying and didn’t stop until after Roadside Cafe was finished.**
Merman **Well, folks, this is my favorite non-album song so you can only imagine how it felt for me to hear it. It was my personal high-light of the show. I don’t even want to try to describe it, because I won’t do it justice.**
Landslide **Before she started playing, Tori said something like, “I know the Dixie Chicks are playing this, but fuck ‘em.” I remember seeing someone write that this song seems to be about us now. When she sang, “I built my life around you” she looked at the crowd and then during “I’m getting bolder, children get older, I’m getting older too” she looked at us again with a serene half-smile on her face. It was so sad.**
(band returns)
Bells For Her **Woohoo! No complaints here - it was perfect and emotionally-charged.**
(end of Roadside Cafe)
Concertina **Tori took a long time before starting to play. She sat on the piano bench, groovin’ to the music and shooting us seductive glances and then applied lipgloss. I was so surprised she played this, for some reason. I love the song, so I was ecstatic. It’s a little bit lower and slower than the album version, and it was gorgeous.**
Spring Haze **Tears. Lots of tears. I was hoping to hear this since she didn’t play it in Minneapolis. The water and cloud backdrop was a perfect touch. The chorus gave me serious chills. I will always remember the last “Waiting for Sunday to drown.” She held “drown” out for an incredibly long time and it was the most resonant thing I have ever heard.**
Father Lucifer **Awww! I loved the live version of this song. Tori was so incredibly cute throughout the whole thing. When she sang, “Girls that eat pizza and never gain weight” she flipped off the crowd. Well, in essence, the girls that eat pizza and never gain weight. So, I guess I can say Tori gave me the finger. Hooray!**
Take To The Sky **I’m really glad Tori is playing TTTS so much on this tour. It’s such a great live song. People were clapping throughout the whole thing. I didn’t clap - I’m not vehemently anti-clapping, BUT I would rather hear the instruments rather than people clapping. I loved, loved, loved it and was thinking of orfeo the whole time because I know how much he enjoys this song.**
I Can’t See New York **This is my second favorite song from SW (after Virginia). I thought the transition between TTTS and ICSNY was kind of strange but it worked ok, I guess. There is so much emotion in the album version that I can’t believe there can actually be more in the live version, but there definitely is. I absolutely love this song live - it’s a mind-blowing experience.** After Tori finished, she threw her set-list on the floor.**
i i e e e **Can we say, “heart attack waiting to happen?” I’ve heard she had been playing this a lot recently and I was keeping my fingers crossed. It was awesome! I love how everything went to a whole different level once she started singing, “Just say yes you little arsonist.” The lights were almost blinding, which is the only complaint I have about it.**
(1st encore)
Precious Things **Ok, I don’t know what to say. This is the greatest live song ever. She didn’t play it in Minneapolis, so I was soooo thrilled she played it in Duluth. Every second of it was unbelievable and we got an incredibly long, “Girrrrrrrrrrrrl-uh. Yay!**
Taxi Ride **I enjoyed this song more in Minneapolis because I wasn’t sick of it - I am slightly sick of it now, sorry to say. It was good, don’t get me wrong. I love how much passion she puts into “Even a glamorous bitch can be in need.”**
(2nd encore)
TomBigBee **Oh. My. God. A lot of people around me were really shocked she played this, but Jeff had told me earlier she played it at one the shows last week. I kind of wish I hadn’t known that, because it was great to see and hear people’s reactions to it. I love this bee-side so so much. It was incredible live - I’m so glad she did it.**
Putting The Damage On **I adore this song. It’s my favorite from BFP. I had imagined how it would feel just hearing those first words “glue, stuck to my shoe” live. It was heaven. It’s such a beautiful finale song. It was the perfect ending to a perfect concert.**
Congrats to those of you who read this whole thing. It was probably the most amazing experience of my life. I was just so happy to be there, since I easily could have been kept in the ER. Tori was so animated and obviously happy to be there. She didn’t leave an ounce of emotion backstage - it was a great concert and I hope those of you who have not seen Tori yet have a similar experience (or even better, experienceS).
Lots of love-
Carly
