Sean and I drove up the coast (about a 3 hour drive from southern california) and hoped and prayed we would make it up to Santa Barbara in time for the meet&greet. We did...just as we arrived into town & walked up to the Theater (which is an old movie-theater, so it's quite small, compared to some of the other venues she's played in CA) we could see many other Toriphiles standing around & 'in line' for the meet & greet. We asked around & learned that no official word had been spoken from Tori's people about the m&g as of yet, so I was still crossing my fingers that the whole thing would happen. After about an hour of waiting around, we were told that there would be NO m&g due to the fact that there was nowhere really to do one (it's a very small theater in the middle of busy downtown SB & not too many places to barricade off near it, so I could understand that), and the fact that they were running behind schedule (this was well after 4:30pm). Okay, I almost died, but somehow we made our way to our parked car which was behind the theater in a Vons shopping center.....on our way, I ran into Jessica (imapixie) who had sold us our tix....we hugged & said hello's....she's a cutie. She was bummed b/c she had a YKTR vinyl that she wanted signed by Tori.....but alas, no signage occured for any of us. We got to our car & it turns out that's right where the Tour buses were parked....as we were coming up on our car we saw the band & crew unloading.....Matt walked right past us and entered the Vons (grocery store) which was located right next door to the theater; it shared the parking lot.....Joel (Tori's bodyguard) walked past our car & he was nice enuf to pose for a photo with me, only the camera was not on (grrr!) & he was in a hurry so no photo! lmao....meanwhile we waited around for Matt to come out of the store. The whole place was very casual & the parking lot was very small, so we just hung out and watched the crew unload & set stuff up (they were at the backstage area to the theater). After a several minutes of watching shoppers come out with their cases of Friday night beer, we gave up on good ol Matt. We suspect he snuck out the back or something! lol....We ended up going in to do some quick shopping of our own, & never did see him. Okay, onto the show..... We got to the theater a little bit after Rhett Miller had started & we wanted to get some quick drinks first. After that, we made our way to the merchandise stands, where I picked up a tour book for my beloved fearscape & a back tiny-t 'scarlets walk' shirt for me! yay....i wore it today, i love it!......We found our seats, about 10 rows back from the stage. Rhett had just finished his opening act. I knew that Karl (bexface) was sitting in the front row, and after seeing someone I thought was him at the m&g, I went up to that same someone in the front row & asked "are you Karl?".....yep! We hugged, & he came a few rows back to meet Sean & we chatted for awhile.....he's so kind and sweet.....he even brought me some souvenirs from a recent Joe Jackson show he went to in MI, b/c he knew that I was a JJ fan....(thanks again, Karl!!!)... about Arlington Theater.....you must go to the dent & read the other reviews there! There are some great descriptions....basically when you are inside the theater and the lights are dimmed, you feel like you are outdoors, standing under a beautiful Western sky with the stars above you....and on either wall to the left and right of the stage there is Spanish pueblo motif, similar to something out of Disney's the Pirates of the Carribean....with the fake little windows all lit up & flowerboxes on the windowsills, etc. It had a definite Spanish feel to it (i was thinking: "balmy days, sweet sangria....") It was a very intimate venue and just felt really cozy. I made a quick call to fearscape to say hi (because I was too excited, I was about to come out of my skin! lol) and right after that the lights dimmed & Wampum Prayer started. We were on the left aisle & could see behind the curtain.....John was standing there motioning something fiercely to somebody with his hands! lol...Curtain goes up & Tori comes out, dressed beautifully in a turquoise/grey/purple flowy dress that had a veerrrrrry plunging neckline, to show off her pretty dangly necklace (which looked to have ruby-colored stones). The bodice of the dress was a greyish speckled patterned (at least from where we were sitting) and one sleeve was a sheer turquoise color, while the other was purple. She wore her trademark rolled up jeans underneath it, with the most gorgeous sparkly purple hi-heeled sandals. She wore her hair down with a purple ribbon braided into one side. Bottom line: she looked gorgeous & we could tell from the way she took the stage that she was in a great mood! Sorta Fairytale~ I agree with others who mentiond that the song sounded somewhat richer that night....I loved it! The sound in this theater was amazing.....with that first song we were instantly glad we chose to see her here in Santa Barbara, rather than (the very large) Anaheim venue. Crucify~ we figured she would play this one, seeing as how it was "Good Friday"....it was very intense and the verses were very drawn out, making the song quite long. Tori really got down at the end of it "....never going back to Crucify myself/ never crawling back to crucify myself again"....or something extremely similar to that. I SHOULD TELL YOU THAT I PULLED OUT MY SHARPIE PEN & MY CHECKBOOK & TOOK NOTES ALL NIGHT! lol....you should see my checkbook register...Anyway, i'm so glad I did b/c I wrote down all kinds of good tidbits. Pancake~ When she started this, i felt sure the night would continue on with the religious themes (and I was right!). This was my 3rd time hearing this one played this tour & I must say it was my least favorite of the 3 versions.....BUT, she did her usual body-grabbing stuff on "like a flag on a popstar...." and the audience loved it. Tori seemed to really be smiling at the audience quite a bit. After Pancake ended, she said Hello to the audience and mentioned "well, the last time we played in this magical lil place was back in '94" (audience cheers).....and then Tori said, "A lot has happened since THEN!" She introduced the guys & then went into TTTS...
Take To the Sky~ this one has become a definite crowd favorite & I'm glad she played it toward the beginning of the show this time. She did her usual hand-clapping & the audience clapped along for the first half of the song or so. Toward the end of the song, she did her Carole King improv: "I feel the Earth move under my feet, I feel the sky tumbling down"....and then she also said "it's shaking me up, shaking me up..." It was a fantastic ending to the song....very powerful & Tori was so into it that she let a huge glob of spit out! lmao....hey, you wanted details! This song really set the energy level for the night, I think....everyone seemed to love it and almost everyone was dancing in their seats at this point.
OMG MY FAVORITE PART......
Father Lucifer~ ok, once again, i had an inkling that she MIGHT possibly play this, with the religious theme she had going for the night, BUT when i heard the little improv before it I was perplexed....something about "yooooouuuu....wooohoooooo" (ok, that's what i wrote b/c that's what i heard!). I thought it sounded a bit like she was gonna break into "you never looked so sane", but wasn't sure.....then all of a sudden she began the first notes to the song & I just completely lost it. I've never heard her do this one live before and I LOVE THIS SONG....so I broke my own record by being in tears after only the FIFTH song! When she sang "nothing gonna stop me from floating" her voice was so incredibly beautiful I almost couldn't stand it! She seemed to be looking upward, as if talking to someone when she sang this. And she took me from tears to laughter when she got to the line about "never gain weight" and gave the middle finger! LOL! This song was beautiful to me.
Lust~ the lights went very dark as she started this one....she added a little improv after the words "...and his secrets can be told". She sang: "remember, remember" very slowly & prettily before starting "hey, you gender nectar" again.
I loved how she did so many improvs with the songs thru the night! She was just totally shining to me.....like she was in her element! Her voice was amazing, as well. I'm always blown away by her voice and her incredible stamina during her shows.....okay, onto the next song....

Black Dove~ Ooooh, I love this song live! This song had cool lighting & the audience got pretty lit up, as well, especially on the part "but i have to get to Texas". It struck me as I was watching her that there was like a Jeckyl/Hyde thing going on with this song... she was so soft and pretty on "black dove, black dove..." then she turned & got really loud & powerful on "on the other side of the galaxy.." and the lighting just reinforced this all the more. Where we were sitting we could hear many audience members singing "by the woods, by the woods...". It gave me chills! Wednesday~ instantly the crowd was cheering at the beginning of this one. Again, her voice was just stellar and you could really appreciate it at the slower parts like "out past the fountain..." Lots of energy in this song with John and Matt, too. Tori was smiling. It was clear she was having fun. On the 'even still the eagle has to land" part a couple fans up toward the front stood up & did full-body gestures as if they were eagles coming in for a landing.....quite comical. I love how Tori pauses for those quiet taps on the piano in the middle of the song & she lets her spare hand fall back in front of her to kind of bounce with the rhythm of those little beats. (I always wanna do that now when i hear the song!) after this song, the guys left the stage & down came that lovely ROADSIDE CAFE sign.....ooooh, my heart got all fluttery!!!!! she started with what was clearly an improv & I wrote down most of what she said: On my way here from LA, out of my window I saw a Black Jesus, carrying his cross and carrying his blood (?) and on my way the phone rings Mommy, where is Daddy? and if Jesus had a little one would she say Where's Daddy? And if we have little ones, Do we say Where's Mary? I thought Mrs Jesus might be coming, but nope!!!... Jackie's Strength~ maybe it was just me, but Tori seemed really emotional on this song....I couldn't tell if it was the improv or the song itself, but the whole song was really touching. on "make me laugh, say you know, you can turn me into the real thing" her eyes looked so expressive and sad. OKAY, NOW ENTER THE MOMENT WHERE I NEARLY FAINTED!!!!!!!.... Here. In my Head~ HOLY POTATOES! ::)I was beside myself with delight when she started this one. I had never heard it live before & her voice was sooooooo incredibly beautiful on this whole entire song, and the piano was exquisite. It occured to me if I had been taken to that concert by someone else & I had never heard Tori's music before, hearing that ONE song would have made me want to go out & buy every Tori album and b-side....it was absolutely incredible. I didn't want the song to end. I was trying to wipe away tears so that I could take in how gorgeous she was playing this one. The whole place was quiet while she did this. When she sang "and even forgot what time it was" it was as if her voice just reverberated thru that whole theater....totally awesome. I think many fans were quite surprised by here playing this one. Toward the end she sang "here in my head" two times and the first time she held her hand up to her head on the word 'here', and the second time she put her hand on her heart. It was just beautiful all around.......the definite highlight to the night for me!! [see next post]

Winter~ bahaha, i sooo wished fearscape and orfeo could have heard this with me! hehe... It was beautiful as always.....on the line "I always wanted that myself"...she took a pause and became very quiet and gave a soft smile to someone in the front row, whom I'm sure was probably crying like I would have been! She did a lot of echo-ey/reverberating throughout the show & I remember it quite a bit on this song. Toward the end of the song, some fool had their cell phone ring & everyone gasped! lol....Tori kept on playing & proved later that she had heard it....After Winter, John and Matt came back onstage but the Roadside Cafe sign stayed up for one more song.... The band started up and Tori did a cute little improv that went something like this: don't you hate when you're the one who leaves your cell on? don't you hate when your friends look at you and say: 'YOU LOSER!' (*crowd giggles*) don't you hate when you're the one who doesn't have the fun don't you hate when you're the one who leaves your cell onnnnn?Muhahahaaa, Tori! Carnival~ very soul-full, this song was. Tori was swaying with it. Great Bass, too. bexface made a comment to me before the show about how 'tight' Tori, Matt, and John had become even since my last show in December, and told me to see if I noticed a difference....and at about this point in the night I could really understand what he meant. They really worked magic up there on stage! Roadside Cafe sign went up.... Cornflake Girl~ I was sooooo hoping she would play this, especially since she had already done Crucify (and since haullie got neither of them at her show in Sac!). Lots of energy on this song....and the band was amazing. Tori once again seemed to really enjoy herself...actually she looked like she was having downright FUN up there! The purrrr was lovely, as always & got the crowd going. (bexface, i could see you grooving in your seat to this song, just like we were! lol) Sweet Sangria~ Well, after Tori mentioned the evils of having a cellphone on in her improv before Carnival, I wasn't about to call orfeo (LOL) but I sure was thinking of him! This was my 3rd time hearing SS live & it WAS AMAZING! Tori was sooooo sultry with this song. "Ya you think about that"....I never knew 5 little words could be so satisfying! At the end of the song on the line "why does someone have to lose?"...she held her wrists out toward the audience, and crossed them. and now another NEAR FAINTING MOMENT!.... Mary~ This song made my night! She was definitely working on a "Mary" theme throughout many of the songs/improvs, but I never guessed she would play this! She really belted it out on "Butterflies don't belong in nets"....and ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?.....lol, We got GRABBAGE!!! But not grabbage like in Pancake or Precious Things....this was a whole new grabbage!....on the lines "what'll we do when our babies scream? fill their mouths with some acid rain" she grabbed both of her breasts, kinda forcefully and in an exaggerated way.....Yowza, the crowd went wild! Next Tori did a little improv that brought the HUGEST smile to my face......she sang very slowly... "just like my daddy, selling his baby".... Nuts, the crowd went Nuts! The girl sitting next to me I think was having a panic attack! We looked at each other & we both said, "I can't believe she's gonna play this!"....LOL Professional Widow~ ooooh, she gave it the most scrumptious Starrrrrfuckaaahhh!!! And at the end with the "mother Mary" she looked right at the audience. At this point I was thinking about the religious tones of the night & how she really had been driving her point home with us, which seemed to be COULD YOU EVER LET IT BE THE MARY OF IT ALL?! lol(which only got perpetuated further when she later played Mrs. Jesus) I was kinda wishing she had done this song as part of the encore, b/c I reeeallly wanted to be up and dancing for it! I Can't See New York~ Very pretty and she did the same "cloud" lighting as soon as "tracking the beacon" started, that she had done at my last LA show. The audience gets lit up with the clouds, too. iieee~ Stunning! Man, this sounds so amazing live! My first time hearing it. The screaming in cathedrals part is gorgeous....and at the end when she says "why does there gotta be a sacrifice?" she kinda put her hands on her midsection in a cradle-like manner.....it made me think that perhaps she was referring to her miscarriage. The band was incredible on this song....and we knew it was encore time coming (oooh, i didn't want it to be almost over!!). Fans rushed the stage & Tori shook some hands & she & the band exited. 1st encore: Talula~ Tori did the cutest dance coming back out!!!! Like i said earlier, she was just a sultry-hot mama & really strutted her stuff! The crowd was on it's feet for the whole song. on the line "but henry said that it was 3, so it was, here I am" she did a cut-throat motion with her hand going over her neck to signify the be-heading. Mrs Jesus~ the thing that immediately struck me with this song was how the lighting changed to a very brilliant hot pink. Again, more religious reference. The song was very well-done. My second time hearing it & I loved it! She gets soft and quiet and very breathy at the end...it's so pretty. 2nd encore: Taxi Ride~ If the crowd wasn't dancing before, they reallllly were now! A definite favorite & it sounded great! Horses~ knowing this was the final song made me a bit sad, but I've never heard it live before and it just blew me away! It was definitely one of my fav highlights of the night. It was cool to have the band with her on this song....I would have guessed that she would have saved this for Roadside, but it was a very nice ending to a superb show!!

You'll be happy to know that in the last 24 hours I listened to my Winter single AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT!
Still want to eliminate it from the Battle fairly soon, but it's a relative thing!
Oh, and thankyou for the Sweet Sangria vibes. I'm glad I didn't really ever give you my phone number or you would have had all sorts of internaly conflicts to deal with. That cell phone improv sounds brilliant!

I'm so glad I wrote it down ( i was chuckling all the while & I didn't want to take my eyes off of miss Tori for a second, so my writing was ALL over the place...in my checkbook, LMAO!) and Tori was trying not to laugh....she was looking in the direction of where the ring came from for most of the song....she is just so funny!

Brilliant review, honeybee!! Can't get it up to post my own. No way I can do as good a job as you. I might try before the week is over. If you thought the grabbage was good in "Mary," you should've seen her in Pittsburgh. There, she not only grabbed them, but squeezed them such that you thought the "acid rain" would squirt out at the audience!! Great to meet you and Sean. Thanks for the kind comments as well. See you next tour??

excellent review I lag too much to try and write my own How were those seats? I had to pay $125 for my one seat and it was way off to the side, when I called the place, they were like "Oh mam, there are NO bad seats in the place, they are all really great, yeah even if you are on the side, they are terrific" BAH! what a bunck of poppy-cock! I was in the second row off to the side, and all I could see was Tori's back the entire time, no John, no Matt, just the back bah booo I am sorry if the were shitty, I hope you liked the show though How was your romantic stay? Hi Jessica! Well gosh, Now i feel kinda bad b/c our seats (that we bought from you) were GREAT!!! We were back just far enough to have a perfect view of Tori & John....I could sorta see Matt peeking over the top of the piano, but Sean couldn't really see him at all. But the show was awesome & we were very thankful for the seats! And the romantic stay was......romantic! We love Santa Barbara. LOL, thanks again!
