As the plane banked into the clouds, the words echoed through my head: “You get closer and closer, call my name…” For indeed, I was getting closer by the second.
(#25) WOW. Add a few more WOWs to this and you have the general sense of this show. It was filled with wonder and became an exercise in anticipation. Anticipating the next moment of wonder while the present one came to an end. And not being disappointed with the next one. The only exception I can think of is hearing ICSNY and knowing that the show was coming to an end, which it had to eventually. The audience seemed more rapt and attentive than usual and perhaps this led her to put more extra stuff into this show. Yeah, there were the usual shouts of love and screams of recognition for the songs but fairly subdued. I will only cover the highlights that struck me here:
Not by accident had I been hearing “Caught a Lite Sneeze” while landing for that turned out to be the follower to “a sorta fairytale.” Matt does a GREAT job plugging out the beats in this and many other tunes. Not much later came “Pandora’s Aquarium,” which must’ve been a rarity as I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it live. She put a lot into this, with its own unique intro. Towards the end, her effort increased to the point she was either drooling or sweating big gobs onto the ivories. Yeah, gross, but it showed the intensity in another tangible sign. “Glory of the 80s” was also special for me, first time again in a concert. Very rockable with the band. The Café was truly another memorable one. Started off with “Mr. Zebra” and then tailed off into a superb rendition of “Doughnut Song” that suspended us for an eternity without making it feel that way. “Enjoy the Silence” was good (although it was obvious MANY were singing along to the lyrics whenever she ended a phrase with an “ss” sound as that sound hissed throughout the crowd). “Rattlesnakes” also rang a chord through me (another great SLG tune, another first for with the band).
The encores came. For the first time I can remember, the audience did not stand. Of course, we stood to applaud her as they went off-stage but then quickly sat down (while it took a little longer for the right side of the audience to do the same). According to some others, security was taking an active role in getting people back down into their seats. Not that you could really rush the stage as there was a metal fence partitioning off the pit where no seats had been laid. After the first two songs of the first encore, Matt and Jon strode off but Tori remained and you had to wonder what was coming next. First, a haunting intro stating she still loved someone. And then right into “Etienne.” If you thought the Chicago version was good, let me tell you, this version put that one far behind. The vibrancy of the Bosey, not tempered by the band, broke loose. What a fantastic version!! Worth the entire trip by itself.
Anyway, can’t say enough about this show. Bexface rating: 9.5 stars out of 10.
