(#37) Two days after the fact and my perception of the show is a lot different than when it happened. I think it was a rocking show and, ultimately, a better show than the first one.
First, you have to be impressed with the variety. It was just outstanding. Some tunes just fit right within a slot. A lot of this setlist had me swooning. "Suede" was great and unexpected. "Honey" I had been hoping for. My friend wanted "Sweet Sangria." I had yearned to here the live version of "Sweet Dreams" and that came along too. The Café was one of my personal favorites. First came a standard "Leather" so I thought this would progress through something else standard. Wrong. For some odd reason, I have a connection to "Here in my Head." How can you explain getting to hear such a gem, such an intense song, performed as intensely as I have ever seen it especially in this latest rendition? I have seen it 5 out of 7 times, I am so lucky!! (Bigosh, sometimes I would trade away three of those for one Marianne. ) And you know she is really into when the saliva comes out (does she miss the keyboard with that stuff?)!! That led into my first ever contact with "Wrapped Around Your Finger." Absolutely amazing as well. And then "Your Cloud" which is personally one of my top two or three songs from Scarlet's Walk. It was so beautiful the last time she played it here and it was again. "Over the Rainbow" is also very, very beautiful. It is one of those songs can freeze you up as she glides along, note by note, pitch by pitch. You hold it in the palm of your hand while it soaks into you. Yes, I have to say, about as great a setlist as I could hope for. (Carly, o you are so right. And you should've been there!! )
Other items of note: Sang a little longer to start off "Concertina" and was singing along, "get that frequency out of there." At first I thought she was alluding to her pitch but, really, it was decent. Later reports have it that she was working with the sound crew to get it right. The other slight messup (and don't you just love 'em when they happen) was during "Glory of the 80s" where she flubbed up the end of line, saying something like "blah blah blah" and then, after getting back into it, introduced the phrase "the words just disappear." She is so precious!! And having the good karma not to disturb the bug on her middle C. Priceless!!
I also felt it was a strange show as far as speed was concerned. Everything just flew by during the regular set. All of a sudden the Café was on, then next she was singing "I Can't See New York." Omigod, where was the time going? But those two encores changed everything, with a pace that felt more natural and full, full of life.
Yes, I can safely say that was the best show I have seen this swing. It holds a lot of personal meaning to me for its unique-ness and frequent long flashes of beauty, as well as for the people that shaped it. Thanks, you know who you are. And (moreso) THANKS, TORI!!!
