(#41) The show started with a rare treat. While Matt and Jon plugged out the rhythms to "a sorta fairytale," Tori didn't immediately come out on the stage. Instead, she stood by the curtain entrance and held Tash from under her arms. She moved her up and down to the beats while Tash waved at us. What a thrill it was to see her for the first time! (Maybe she was saying "thanks" for the DVDs?)
And there was the goddess. Right in front of us. She wore the red/orange/yellow flowing semi-translucent gown from the second half of the Columbus show. Beneath that, a very low broad cut tank top (oooolala) with her standard jeans. Were the slippers the pink ones from NYC? I don't know; the lighting might have made them red. All I know is she is stunningly beautiful and hard to keep your eyes away from. She is so hot!!
She interspersed her ivory plunking with frequent looks and whimsical smiles to the audience. For the entire evening, the smiles were flowing freely between her, Matt, and Jon. No question the energy was up there. We were in for a good show.
"Professional Widow" rocked real good. Very graphic was the blowjob motion on the microphone while spittles flew about. She is so intense. That was just the warmup. "Father Lucifer" kept up the pace (gotta love the finger), going on into "Cornflake Girl."
The improv was a riot. Matt and Jon were involved on this on, albeit at a subdued level. Her topic of the evening was the upcoming family "show" in DC. She would have to put up with the Jesus freaks afterwards (sounds like a huge headache for Tori). Her uncle admits that his daughter is a lesbian but Tori has work for her. Must be tough to be a minister's daughter!
Y'know this front row thing makes it hard to dance. Especially to a tune as infectious as the new "Upside Down." All you can is move your butt in your seat and hope you don't get flamed for being too "ballistic." I hope I did this song justice. Jon's bass keeps this moving like nothing else. (Yes, that was me in the center of the front row. WOO-HOO!!)
I almost cried during the Cafe. "Leather" had more intensity than I am used to. It set up the next two, "Seaside" and "A Case of You." So expressive and flowing they were, bidding the tears to come out (but they just wouldn't). And topped off with "Bells for Her" with the band. ("Can't stop what's coming....")
Now that she had my full and complete attention, more rocking ensued up to the encore with "Sweet Sangria," "Take to the Sky" (this time I did not feel as alone in the rocking as everyone seems to know that you get up for the Carole King cover), and my most favorite Tori rocker of all time: "Precious Things." Thank gawd the encores came cause I was tired of dancing in my seat!
I fully enjoy the jamming Jon and Matt blast out at the start of each encore. For "God," I could've sworn they were doing a Gabriel cover of "In Your Eyes" (that is, until Tori came back and started playing). "Suede" toned things down but then came the second encore. For the third consecutive show I have seen, she treated us to three tunes. "Tombigbee" and "Glory of the 80s" got us back up to speed again. "Your Cloud" (the final final Tori tune for me) just chokes me up, one of my top three faves from SW. So fitting that she should end the set there.
