Heya! Here's a small attempt of getting some bookworms together! As I've been on a holiday and had plenty of time for one of my favorite past-times my book blog is up and running again. So if anyone would like to hop over to rant and rave about books, you can check it out. It's mainly me posting about books I've read--nothing too high-brow, I'm afraid--, but reading suggestions are always welcome or any thoughts the books have brought about in your head! I firmly believe that a little talk on our favorite subjects stretches the brain muscles nicely Anyways, if you're a book friend or you have your own book blog somewhere, I'd be very interested in hearing about it and exchanging thoughts! And now, after this terrible plug, you can go here if you're interested!

That is a great idea!
How do you think it would be best realized? I dont think that a bookclub, that read only one book at a time would necessarily work because a) people here have so different time tables and might not be able to follow the "course" and b) people are from different countries so a certain book might not have been translated or could not be found in the country.
My suggestion would be to select like 3-5 books at a time, per time period (month, two months?) and then people could freely post about them. I suppose that would require then a sub-forum of some kind. What do you think?
Anyone else interested? ;D Let those two-cents fly in!

This sounds interesting... only I am afraid I don't exactly have time for reading... but I'm always interested in hearing about great books, so I will lurk if not participate!

Veela (wuw that name), by the way, if you check my journal I should say that I do my best to not talk about any significant spoilers, or if I do I have "hidden" them in a white text so that you can't see them unless you click and drag that part. Of course the problem is then, what's not spoilerish for me might be spoilerish to someone else, so I've written in my userinfo my rules of spoilering. If you're interested, that is!
And yay, Tanja! I'm sure I won't have much time to read once I get back to work, but I think we could take it easy with the book club and once it gets rolling people could still comment on old threads once they catch up. Maybe the book(s) we're currently reading could be stickied so that they'd always be on top of the page, but rest could still be commented on.
How does that sound?

oh, i hate spoliers... i would be careful!!! i glanced at it briefly yesterday. was going to comment on "the history of love" because i just read that book recently and LOVE LOVE LOVED it!!!! and i agree with the writing similarities between that and foer. actually, i didn't know they were married when i was reading it and i was thinking that stylistically it reminded me of illuminated...
anyway, for the book club we should try to find some books that none of us have read. however, for those interested, here are some that i've read recently that i've really, really liked:
The History of Love -- Nicole Krauss The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger Yellow - Janni Visman
so yeah, those are some recent ones that have touched me in some way, in case anyone is interested... i know i'm always looking for recommendations!!!!!

I have never heard of those other titles! Cool, recommendations are always welcome for me, too. I'm a fairly picky reader during times when I have to work, so it's good to get recommendations from people whose tastes I trust I mean, if you liked Illuminated and The History of Love, we have something in common! Ok, going to put my thinking cap on now. I'm sure Nattie has already started devising this book club!

yellow is kind of strange but i liked the language in it... often, the language will hit me more than the story itself. but the kite runner is just a must read and the time traveler's wife is one that i just really, really liked but can't explain why...
oh, i would say to any of those who take any of these recommendations, don't read what "history of love" is about before you pick it up. go into it blindly. i think that makes it better.
would you agree jenni??? i didn't even read the discription before reading the book and i think that made it all the more exciting...

Yeah, the plot line of History of Love doesn't really describe the book at all. I hardly ever read the jacket blurbs anyway because often enough they actually reveal 2/3 of the book's events! That's why I go to read books that have been recommended with the words "Read it, you should like it" or if I've seen the title mentioned in a place that I frequent. ;D

i absolutely agree!!! if i read the jacket, i end up looking for all the things that i know are going to happen, like "oh, so this must be the part where the car accident happens..." it's best to just go in blindly!

Oh man, that's the most annoying bit. Just waiting for it to happen in a book.
Or well... in the case of Donna Tartt's The Secret History, the reader knows what is going to happen, but the facts of when, how and why are not known. I remember when I realized that the events in the novel were finally leading up to the occurence which was revealed in the first pages, I got goosebumps! That's pretty damn good writing.
Another idea about the book club (which you already actually know, Veela):
what do you guys think of themes? Such as that we decide a theme and everyone can choose any old book to read and present to others--as long as it's within that theme. Themes could be: - disgusting romantic novels a la Barbara Cartland - historical novel - any time period - sci-fi - fantasy - fairytales - comics - biographies
things like that. We know that genres contain a lot of variety, so it could be kind of cool to see which kinds of reads people find enjoyable within a genre.
