Mentioning LOTR in another thread made me think of this. What are your favorite film versions of books? What do you normally expect from the movie that is based on a favorite story of yours? Which movie versions have been terrifying disappointments, which have been pleasant surprises? I know a bunch of people here are Harry Potter readers--how happy have you been with the movie versions? I was really, really pleased with the way The Lord of The Rings turned out. I had been an LOTR nerd since the age of 9 and I was scared stiff that Peter Jackson--the dude who made all those stupid gore films!--would ruin it, but he did a great job. Of course I didn't like all the stuff in the movies (added romantic bits, etc) but still in general I was really happy about them. I also liked Everything Is Illuminated--I know a few people here disagree with me! It did drop my favorite storyline, but I felt like the movie could in the end stand on its own. A really sucky adaptation of a story is however Starship Troopers. Ugh. The book is really nice and has these interesting speculations about what society could be like, and the movie is just making it seem like the author was a supporter of fascism (the director has apparently said so) and it's just a stupid shooting and violence-movie. No wonder sci-fi has a bad reputation. I once by the way tried to read a book that was made after the movie. Bad, bad choice.

^ heeeeeeyyyyyyy...... nothing stupid about Peter Jackson's early stuff!! Braindead is awesome!
but anyway...........
This thread reminded me of something I wanted to bring up with you Jenni.. You seen much about the movie for Northern Lights?? Oh - except it's called The Golden Compass in the movie version, but oh well. It seems quite exciting in general.
There's a whole bunch of interesting stuff been talked about on another forum I visit, but I'm too tired (/drunk.. etc..) to talk about it right now. Tomorrow I'll post more info and stuff. I was thinking about you earlier in relation to this though.
(Nicole Kidman = Mrs Coulter, btw!! ... I think she'll be alright, but she's got blonde hair in the film!? that's just wrong. The new James Bond guy is Lord Asriel, too)
ok better go to bed

Oh, P.S. To keep on topic... I think Memoirs Of A Geisha was OK movie-wise.... I did read the book first though, and was quite dissapointed with the movie here and there (hello, did you see Nobu?!) - but it was alright, and the sets/costumes etc were gorgeous, so can't complain too much.

Aimee, have you seen the extended edition of Braindead? It's *REALLY REALLY* gory. I love the Harry Potter movies. I just watched Goblet of Fire again for the first time. I'll come back and post more when I get more than a moment. xo

Of course I have Nattie - I'm a New Zealander, it's practically required viewing So awesome. I haven't watched that movie for ages... but every time I see custard I think of Vera's ear falling off into the custard, and then her eating it and spitting out the earring... Ok this is getting away from the book-> movie subject. Sorry! hehe..

Haha, it's ok. Imagine if LOTR was made in the style of Braindead! Instead of massive music building up in the scene of Helm's Deep, it would be some lady playing an electronic keyboard with one finger only. *beep bep bep bep beeep*

Braindead is total splatter comedy But if you really didn't like it, I wouldn't advise you to watch Bad Taste! (his first movie) *giggle*

Yeah, I've seen Bad Taste too. It's umm, in bad taste. HAHAH! Has anyone read the Graphic Novel to V for Vendetta? Any thoughts in comparison with the movie? I haven't read the book, but Shaun did and he loved it. I saw the movie (maybe it's my obsession with Hugo Weaving), I loved it {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{TTHHIISS}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} much. I thought Hugo was amazing, considering he was wearing a mask. xo

And like Aims said, the costumes and stuff were gorgeous!!! And... *spoiler* Actually I liked the movie ending better 'cause there wasn't that New York part. I liked thought Sayuri stayed in Japan. Or at least NY part wasn't shown... */spoiler* And, LOTR, the movies are very good! They are well done, story has of course tiny changes but are forgiveable... (like elves in the Helm's Deep... I can forgive that 'cause I'm such a big elf fan!!!) The movies are gorgeous! I know, I read the book after watching the first movie but still... Hmm... One movie I'm wondering how it will be is the Eragon movie. I have read the book, I liked it...

Why did it need to be such a happy ending? I mean sure I like happy endings, but to me it felt a bit anti-climactic, and I was like "huh?". It is nice that things worked out well for her in the end though.

I thought Hugo was amazing, considering he was wearing a mask. xo A big Alan Moore fan here! I love the graphic novel, so I was a bit wary of this movie. Well. I liked the movie ok. I didn't like it how they tried to make it more cutting edge by showing actual clips of demonstrations against Bush in the movie--the graphic novel had nothing to do with the United States. It just felt too much like "let's explain to the stupid audience what the message of this film is" rather than just letting the viewers draw parallels between the story and the past, present and future themselves. *shrug* But, Hugo Weaving was indeed great. And I love that mask. V is wonderful (never thought I'd say that about a terrorist!) Tanja, all the reviews of Eragon I have seen say the same: it sucks big time. One person said that even the small kids whom she took to the movies to see it were rolling their eyes and saying "duh" during some silly plot developments. Also, a person at another board said she laughed out loud when Malcovich said in his most malcovichian voice: "I suffer without my stone." Well, this is all hearsay. So I'd encourage you to see the movie just so that there might be some OTHER opinions on the movie as well. (All I heard was bad about The Lady in the Water and I actually ended up thinking it was ok).

I think The Virgin Suicides is a wonderful film adaptation. Lolita is another great one. Oh, and of course Fight Club (my favorite movie).

Oh yeah! Trainspotting I read the book after seeing the movie many times, and like the book a lot better - but the movie version is great. The stuff they cut/added was done very well.

Carly, I haven't read Fight Club, but the movie is one of my favorites of all times! It's the only movie I have seen twice at movie theatres--on the same weekend. I should check the book out, too.
Aims, I forgot Trainspotting! I saw the movie first and was surprised how little of the book they actually had in the movie! The book has like 20 different story lines and characters, but Danny Boyle did an awesome job with the movie. I really like it.

I've seen both Virgin Suicides and Fight Club but haven't read books... Actually, I didn't even know/remember Fight Club was based on a book! Of course it's said in the beginning of the movie but haven't noticed... Lol... Virgin Suicides could be good book... Maybe weird, dunno, the movie was... interesting, and, I don't know, there was something weird in it. But it was a fine movie anyway.
