and from one of the other links on that page:
The encyclopedia would include back stories of characters she has already written but had to cut for the sake of narrative arc (“I've said before that Dean Thomas had a much more interesting history than ever appeared in the books”), as well as details about the characters who survive “Deathly Hallows,” characters who continue to live on in Rowling’s mind in a clearly defined magical world.
One of the big stories that has been floating among fans for more than a year is that one character gets a reprieve from death, while two others Rowling didn’t intend to kill end up dying in “Deathly Hallows.” “Mr. Weasley, he was the person who got a reprieve,” Rowling said. “When I sketched out the books, Mr. Weasley was due to die in Book 5.”

I was so looking forward to the bit of "who is able to do magic later in life though not before", and it just wasn't in the book... I looking it up just now asn it seems it's just something JK said in an interview in 99(!) and the fans took it as it will definitely be revealed by the end of the series kind of thing... what is this about? i hadn't heard anything like that. can you tell me more about it? It was listed on the Mugglenet as confirmed info on the 7th book, but apparently, they had misunderstood J.K. It's the last thing on the list below Confirmed Information
On this page you can find several points of information we know about Book 7. Each of these points have been confirmed by an official JK Rowling source.
Character Information
* We will find out something "incredibly important" about Lily Potter. * R.A.B's identity will be revealed. * We will discover more about Dumbledore's past. * We will learn with whom Snape's loyalties lie. * Something will be revealed about Petunia Dursley, although we already know that she is not a Squib. * Viktor Krum will return (World Book Day, 2004 interview). * We will see a reappearance of Dolores Umbridge: "It's too much fun to torture her not to have another little bit more before I finish." (MuggleNet/Leaky Interview) * JKR has said "There is a character who does manage, in desperate circumstances, to do magic quite late in life, but that is very rare..."

i have a question though and i was wondering if anyone else could enlighten me a bit: so when voldemort tried to kill harry (again!) and he woke up in king's cross... dumbledore told him that it didn't work because he had harry's blood in him. but wouldn't that have just given voldemort more protection and not harry? how did that help save harry? i don't get it!! help me out? K, I'm not sure I got it either but then I read the plot recap on Wikipedia and it says: Albus Dumbledore appears and explains that, just as Voldemort cannot die while his soul fragment remains in Harry, Harry cannot be killed while his blood lives in Voldemort's body. Dumbledore also explains that Voldemort's soul fragment within Harry was destroyed by the curse. Although Harry is not actually dead, he has the to choice to move on to the next world or return to the living. So, from what I gather it's like Harry's blood is working as sorta horcrux inside Voldemort, as long as part of that's still alive (his blood inside Voldemort) he couldn't die either... or some weird shit like that I guess I wasn't really paying attention when I read it, Aims, Miranda, come and explain!

thank you!!
hhhmmm... i wonder what the whole "magic later in life" thing was and who it was going to be? maybe it will be explained in the encylopedia?
my other question (that i just remembered) was -- how the hell did the wand get back into the sorting hat??? why is that not explained? griphook ran off with it and i don't see him putting it back. or did it appear back there because the hat had the power to do that? i don't understand!!

You mean the sword of Gryffindor?
Well... I guess... in the second book Harry draws the sword out of the sorting hat and I don't think it was because it would have been put there by anyone... so, yeah, I'd say the hat has the power of doing that. Also, the sword's place was on the wall, not in the hat... so it magically appears.
It's said that goblins have different ideas about ownership as feel that anything made by them should be owned by them, nevermind if they have been paid for it. So Griphook for sure didn't bring it back. But probably Gryffindor had but some spell on the sword that would make it appear for those true Gryffindors in need... My question is rather why it works through the sorting hat, I mean it's a bit dissapointing that the second time Harry used it, Snape had delivered it (no special magic)... anyways, there obviously is some magic connection between the sword and the hat, so well, it's magic.

that's a pretty good explanation. thanks!
but Harry got it the second time because he had to get it by valor or something. that's why Snape put it in the lake. Dumbledore said something of the sort from his portrait when Harry was in Snape's memories...

Although I guess Neville got it by valor also - apart from the fact that he really needed it, so it appeared... what he did with it was DAMN ROCKIN so I guess that's the valor part covered? lol I dunno.. maybe the first time it comes to you for need, but the second time you have to earn it a little more *shrug* haha looks like I've missed lots of discussion about it. Glad to see you've both finished it And yeah I think the reason Harry didn't die is because Voldemort's curse simply destroyed the horcrux, leaving Harry free to live or somesuchshit.

OH! yeah thanks for posting that link up the top of the page. I'm so glad she revealed what kind of jobs they all ended up getting - that was kinda nagging at me a bit lol I can't believe my assumption that Luna would end up travelling around discovering weird creatures was right. aww.. she's so cool. An encyclopedia thing would be great.
