A Caribbean vacation. Snow days home from school. Angelina Jolie.
What do these things have in common? They're all pretty freaking awesome, that's what. In fact, I'd almost guess they could be contenders for the title of "Best. Thing. EVER." don't you? But that's not for me to decide. No no - that's OUR job.
What the Greek is he talking about, you say? The official Toriforum "Best. Thing. EVER." game, that's what! This is a chance for us to take all the little things (and big things) in life that we love and officially declare one of those things the BEST THING EVER. Still confused? Let me break it down for you...
HOW THE GAME WORKS:
1) Every toriforum member is encouraged to pick THREE entrants to be submitted to an elimination-style tournament to decide the best thing ever. You may pick anything you want, but there are guidelines you should keep in mind (look a bit lower on this thread to find them).
2) At the end of October, no more entries will be accepted. Every entry will be randomly paired against another entry, and set up in a big ol' elimination-style tournament bracket.
3) The first two combatants will enter the ring, and toriforumers will vote on which thing is better. Once all of the original pairings are done, the winners will move up to the next round, and so on and so forth, until we have one winner left.
4) However, since I have no idea how many people will be playing, I am not entirely sure how the game will play out yet - we may have several brackets, with several different polls going on at once, or we may just have one big bracket - it depends on how many entrants we get, mmmkay? If we did have several, the winners of each bracket would just go up against each other at the end of it all to determine the final winner.
Here's a visual example for anyone who does not know how elimination-style tournaments work:
See! It's that simple. Now, on to the (loosely defined!) rules...
1) We're looking for somewhat general things here (though not too general!). For example, it'd probably be a better idea to use "Pixar Films," as opposed to "Toy Story." If you honestly think "Toy Story" alone is better than all other Pixar Films combined, go ahead and nominate it, but don't cry if your entry dies first round!
2) In a similar vein, rememember that this is the "Best. Thing. EVER." game, and not the "my favorite things" game. It's great that you really love Thelma and Louise, but do you think that movie alone is really one of the best things about life? If you do, please go ahead and nominate it, you're more than welcome to pick whatever you want, but just keep in mind that the competition for "Best. Thing. EVER." will be intense!
3) Be creative! Think about this a while. I'd rather not see any entries posted TODAY, for example (unless you've already thought this through before of course!). That's not to say you're not allowed to post whatever the heck you want, and if you do post today that's up to you, but the game will be loads more fun for everyone if we all get some really good ideas in here.
4) Rules for posting entries (just to make sure this goes smoothly - PLEASE READ THESE):
a) Please read ALL of the other entries before you post yours. Repeat entries will be rejected. Please be sensible about this, if someone posts "cats," and you were gonna post "kittens," you might want to try a little harder and think of something a bit more fresh.
b) When you think you have your entries finalized, please use bold type at the top of your post (not the subject line, but the first line in the actual post) and put "[name]'s entries." For example, "Jay's entries" would be mine, or you can use your username on here if you'd prefer of course.
c) Yes, you may edit your entries, but if you do so, PLEASE MAKE A NEW POST. I cannot stress that enough - I plan on keeping a running list of all the entries received so far on the second post of this thread, so people can see at a glance what's already been posted, and if people edit their entries instead of posting a new post, I would probably never catch them. I just want to keep this organized, that's all! And if you're making a new post to change your entries, please use the "[name]'s entries" in bold again. It would just make the whole thing so much smoother for me.
5) Last rule: Everyone is welcome to play! Whether you're reading this as a first-time member, or you've been here since the dawn of time (coughmarycough) we would love for you to join us!
Ok... that's IT! Feel free to ask any and all questions you have, preferably on here so everyone else can see the answers, but if you'd rather PM me that's fine. Feel free to chatter away on this thread about everyone's choices, too, the more dicussion we have, the better our ideas will be! Oh, and by the way, Angelina Jolie and Pixar Films are both already taken! Do not use them in your entries, please
(Mods, could one of you please sticky this? Mary said to tell you she was down this this being stickied. Thanks! You guys rock my internet)
