Last night they finally got around to showing the end of Season 9 of the X-Files in Australia. The whole season was much delayed, mainly because the show's popularity had dropped and the network kept it for the second-string spring/summer season.
I know there's a fair number of XF fans on this board. Now that I've seen the end I was wondering what others thought of it. Personally I quite enjoyed it - I thought they did a fairly coherent job of summing up what had happened in the whole 9 years.
(Anyone who hasn't seen the show and doesn't want any spoilers - LEAVE THE THREAD NOW! That the way the rest of us can talk freely.)

Whooo X-Files..now I'm never going to stop talking. The finale was ok. Out of 10, I'd give it a 7. The Mulder!Torture in the beginning was nice lol The kiss, oh god my heart dropped when I first saw it. Oh how delightfully shippy..now if only it was in the light. And the look on Skinner's face?! lmao, that was priceless. "Come here you big, bald beautiful man." "The only thing you're going to be kissing, Mulder, is your sweet ass goodbye with the trouble you're in." And of course the end scene was sooo wonderful. Unfortunately, earlier that day I had gone online and someone had told me that there was no sex but..the end scene...I really thought they were going to do it. I loved everything once Mulder got out of jail, the beginning, however, annoyed me. First of all, we didn't need a complete plot summary of the last 9 years. Maybe a few minutes, 5 at most, but not for that long. It was the last episode and I wanted to see something new, not people rehashing old stuff. Then there was Weepy!Scully. I don't like Weepy!Scully. True, she has great reason to cry, especially because this is happening to Mulder, but that's just not Scully. I wanted to see Action!Scully. She should have been the one breaking Mulder out of jail, not Doggett and Kersh. Ahh and then the complete lack of closure..we see Skinner get sent into the Deputy Director's office, presumably to get his ass chewed out for assisting in Mulder's escape but then we don't hear anything else about it. Well, what the hell happened?? Was Skinner killed, even? The X-Files office is ransacked and we get no closure on whether the X-Files will stay open at all and what happens to Doggett and Reyes. And what will become of Gibson? Who knows?! And now Mulder and Scully are fugitives, on the run from the government. It's a romantic idea, but I don't see how it can work to set up the next movie, which Chris Carter has said won't have anything to do with the mytharc. But the shippyness made up for some of that...it was so great to have Mulder and Scully together again.

I thought it sucked! Well okay, not sucked, but it didn't explain anything. Where did the psychic boy end up going? What happened to Skinner, Dogget and Reyes? What happens to William? We already knew everything that was "explained" anyway after watching re-runs galore, or I did, anyway, so nothing new was revealed. All in all, I personally was quite dissapointed.

Well, Scully gave William up for adoption (stupidly, IMO, but let's not get into that..) earlier in the season. If you mean, will Mulder and Scully ever get him back (and they should...), then we didn't get the answer to that either.

While I adore the series, I was somewhat disappointed with the last episode. I guess I just expected too much. It's really tough to actually have the "perfect" final episode for a series as great as X-Files. I did like the Mulder-Scully focus, that obviously had to be included. The kiss was great. I didn't quite like that it left so much up in the air to lead to the next movie. Of course, there's always a bit left unsaid in each episode because that is the nature of the show, and it's tough to fit everything in, but I guess I was looking for just a little bit more. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the last episode quite a bit, and I would watch it again and again before watching another tv show (I'm not really a tv-watcher at all. X-Files was the only thing I would watch -- until I discovered Food Network, of course). SO, I'd have to agree with undeniabledilemma, and give it a 7 out of 10. Or maybe an 8.

Ohhh, now we're talkin'! lol I loved the ending, but was sad at the same time.... First, the kiss...OH MY GOD! undeniable, i think you hit the nail on the head with WeepyScully & the whole rehashing thing....I was thinking Come on already....get to the new stuff. and yes, the un-closure with Skinner... that was driving me nuts! I can't quite figure out where they'll take us with the next movie, either. I do know that I'll be first in line.....and I do hope the baby comes back. I don't think Scully could let that go forever. (RANDOM THOUGHT: DaturaFae, you crack me up with your food network addiction! lmao!) ;D

(RANDOM THOUGHT: DaturaFae, you crack me up with your food network addiction! lmao!) ;D Yes, that episode ('William') drove me nuts! I couldn't believe that she would give him up forever!! And Mulder never saw him (right?). So there HAS to be more to that. (Lol, everyone teases me about the food network thing. My mom finds it hysterical cause she'll happen to flip it on and I'll know everything about whatever show happens to be running, but I had to ask what "American Idol" was. )

Mulder saw him when he was first born. I think I remember Chris Carter saying somewhere not to expect William back. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, poor William I bawled my eyes out after that episode.

I actually quite LIKED having a 9-year plot summary. Not the part before the credits (which was really a Season 9 summary), but the parts in the evidence of all the witnesses. The reason I liked it was because they did a rather better job of it than I had ever managed. There were one or two points that they fitted together in ways I'd never thought of, and they seemed to work. I didn't like the early torture of Mulder much. Fairly mindless. Most likely this was contributed to by Mark Snow's music driving me up the wall. For some reason the last two seasons of the show had far more intrusive music than previously. I've just been watching season 5 on DVD more or less parallel to watching season 9 on TV, and in one season I only ever notice the music for GOOD reasons, the other I notice it because it's so damn ANNOYING. The ever-present Weepy!Scully is one of the major drawbacks of season 9. Sure Gillian Anderson can do it well most of the time (and when she was told about the death sentence - perfect!), but she can do so many OTHER things as well. I miss the days of watching in amazement while she charged around in high heels Skinner's disappearing act was a major problem for me too. I mean, hello?! Homicidal maniac alien man has just invited him into Kersh's office, Gibson says that h.m.a.m. knows everything, therefore both Skinner and Kersh are likely to be in serious trouble. So what happened? This is a short-term question, not the sort of long-term thing you can palm off by saying it will be resolved in a future episode (or nowadays a movie). As to long-term issues, I don't really mind that there's still things up in the air. I suppose the fact that I already knew there was a more distant "end-date" (Dec 22, 2012) in the works helped. I couldn't help thinking that it's far enough away for a future movie to have the return of William played by a decent child actor. Coincidence? I think not! I'm thinking that when I get around to giving this my "official" rating it will be a 7.5 or 8 out of 10. Mythology episodes were never my favourites, but I thought they did a reasonable job. PS are we all SURE Cancer Man is dead now? PPS I probably also liked the flashbacks in people's evidence because there was absolutely no music backing these sequences!

You may not remember because it was so long ago when it was aired in the USA, but they actually went so far as to show all his flesh burning up as a missile scored a direct hit. It was very Over The Top, but I think they did it precisely because every fan would otherwise be going "oh yeah, you've shown us he's 'dead' twice already".

'Cause if he survived THAT...
