Time to put a plug in for some Australians!
Scout's honour, the number of Australian acts I listen to has gone up rapidly in the last couple of years, probably because our music scene has really diversified.
My big recommendation to you is a band called Something for Kate. I only have their latest album, called Echolalia, but it's bloody fantastic.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head but I do agree with you that we are at a musical low right now. I am sure good bands will start to come back out, though. It comes in cycles.

System of a Down and Coldplay hell yeah, Pat!!
Orfeo, I have a friend down under who's completely obsessed with Something For Kate. I think I'm gonna check them out now.
Also, I'd recommend a British band called Doves. They're sorta techno alternative Brit pop.
Edited to say: Rasputina also. They're very 18th century goth.

DELERIUM! If you're into ambient music Delerium is the best artist to listen right now (and even if you're not into that kind of music, Delerium is a great musical choice ;D).
These are the songs I recommend:
Silence (ft. Sarah McLachlan) Innocente (ft. Leigh Nash) Wisdom (ft. Kirsty Thirsk) Temptation Euphoria (Firefly) (ft. Jacqui Hunt) Daylight (ft. Mathew Sweet)
Those are enough to start hehe, i'll come back with more songs later!

another band I like is CAKE!
They got their start in Sacramento & I was living there at the time....it's funny to me that they are getting popular now b/c I knew them when they were nobodies! lol Their lyrics are fun, they have a good beat & the guys themselves are so funny. There's some good guitar rifts on their albums.
My fav songs are off their first album, Motorcade of Generosity: Haze of Love, Jolene & Rock n Roll Lifestyle, and Is This Love?.... Their recent album, Prolonging the Magic is good, too. "Never there" is my fav song from that one.

Yep, that's them! I like to put their music on when I have friends over & we're just goofing around & hanging out....it's kinda like fun party music that's not too loud or crazy.
